Swan Song (Room 5) by Kirstenna Melcher

It was all over now. Quidditch, school, everything. She'd been depressed ever since the game, not at all herself. They weren't to blame for their loss, she knew, it was all the Imposter's fault of course. Kirstenna's nemesis was responsible for every bad thing that happened to her over the last seven years. For Brian being kidnapped, for Tobar being boiled alive, for all the Quidditch losses and Sophia ditching her for Renee. And it was certainly the Imposter's fault that things hadn't worked out with Sam.

Still, Kirstenna couldn't help feeling like a failure. There were no more chances, nothing more she could do. She was the one who'd go down in history as the captain who'd never won a game. That was her legacy to the school. She'd never been the sort to need to win at all costs but one game. To save face. To not be a laughingstock.

She knew she was a misfit, an outcast from her family. They didn't want her and now she couldn't feel like more of a loser. Like they were maybe right. That was how the seventh year felt, like she'd screwed up on everything, even if it was the Imposter's fault. Her enemy had won. She was completely defeated.

Okay, so there was the whole rest of her life. Kirstenna could continue in the circus or go on to be a singer like she'd always wanted. But she couldn't help but doubt herself. When had she'd ever had success. Even being named Captain had only happened as a way for the Imposter to get at her. Setting her up only to knock her down. Nothing about Quidditch was honest here at Sonora. All the games were nothing but puppet shows with the Imposter pulling the strings.

Would Kirstenna ever truly be free of her enemy's clutches, even when she graduated in a few days? Would the Imposter continue kicking her down until she felt like nothing. That was how she felt now. The Imposter would block her every attempt to be a singer, or perform spells so she'd get badly hurt doing circus stunts, maybe even kill her.

She had come to Sonora with hopes and dreams and now she had nothing, nothing at all! She was utterly defeated. There would be no more chances, she wasn't even sure about her future, her confidence was badly shaken now. Kirstenna felt completely hopeless about everything.

Still, she wanted to sing, she'd always loved doing so more than she'd loved Quidditch. It was where her focus always had truly been. One might have said that if she focused on the sport more, they would have done better, but she'd done all that she could have, they all had. None of them would have been capable of stooping to the Imposter's level even if they wanted to. She was too strong, too evil.

Kirstenna began to sing. "There is freedom within, there is freedom without, try to catch the deluge in a paper cup.." She went on hitting the chorus. "Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over. Hey now, hey now, when the world comes in.They come, they come to build a wall between us We know they won't win."

She had to keep believing that, she just had to.
