All the important things (tag Sammy) by Jamie Park

Merlin, I remember that one. It sucks. That was the empathetic and insightful comment which had begun what was now in session. Jamie, desperate to avoid his own homework at any cost, had peered over Sammy’s shoulder and recognised a particularly long and tedious Transfiguration essay that had asked them to prove whether or not something was theoretically possible even though it hadn’t been done yet. I’ll save you a long and boring evening, and several feet of parchment, and just tell you, it’s yes. he’d grinned, flopping down beside her. Sorry to spoil the ending. After that, not really doing their homework properly together had become a bit of a thing. It was nice to have someone to bounce jokes off with whilst he worked, and break the monotony of studying. Shino was far too competitive and humourless to serve this purpose, besides which he had to go to the library or somewhere else equally awful to meet her, whereas with Sammy, the two of them could do it in the common room. He prefered doing his homework there, because it was louder and more distracting than the library

As had become habit, he staked out the table by the window for him and Sammy, cracking open some Potions work. It was to do with the laws surrounding amortentia in different states (basically, illegal in all of them, as far as he had read so far, but the degree to which you got your ass busted varied). As a potion that was meant to be all fuzzy and cute (Jamie didn’t really get the whole obsession effect of it, and mostly had mentally filed love potions in the same brain space as chick lit) it sure had some gross stuff in it. But then, most potions were like that. Half the ones that would cure you had something that’d probably kill you if you ate them straight… Which prompted him, as Sammy came to join him, to put on his best poker face and ask

“Honest, swear on my wand, question from CATS in my year…. How many ingredients in a common intermediate potions kits will, if eaten in their raw form, make the taker barf?”

Ok, technically the question had been a little bit more nuanced, and had actually been something about which poisonous ingredients could be found in poison anecdotes, but he felt the gist was close enough that his wand was safe, should she take him up on that. Not that he thought it likely. Sammy was cool like that. She took jokes. She appreciated his sense of humour. He could talk about barf with her and challenge her to bacon eating and resultant burping contests, and yet… yet, when he stopped goofing around long enough, or when she changed out of the messy Quidditch clothes that he usually saw her in into actual girl clothes, she was actually pretty hot. He was pretty sure that girls who were simultaneously able to devour a plate of bacon as tall as themselves and be hot were basically the American dream. They certainly seemed like a pretty good deal to him, and like a pretty rare combo. But he was also unsure how to do anything about it… He strutted, he preened, they had banter. That was basically his plan on how to get girls in general but it had just always been the dynamic of their friendship. He had sent her a flirtatious candycane, but he wasn’t sure whether she’d have taken it seriously. Or whether he really wanted her to because what if they dated and stuff changed and got weird? Then he might not have Sammy any more. He’d seen enough lame ass teen dramas at his Muggle friends houses to know that, once you started dating girls, there was a risk they would go mental for no obvious reason and become obsessed with things they previously had been too cool to care about, like Valentine’s Day. None of the girls on there seemed anything like Sammy, but it was enough to make him cautious, and inclined to stick to the safer conversational territory of the vomit-inducing properties of the contents of their school bags.

OOC - all godmodding of Sammy approved by her author.

Is that by Blink 182? by Sammy Meeks

She found him as she often found him: situated in a spot meant for two, homework splayed, ready and waiting for her to add to the mess. Sammy liked that. She liked being a part of Jamie’s mess; it made sense, and it meshed well with her own. She was glad they had gotten to be good friends. Admittedly, she had found him a little - okay, more than a little - obnoxious at first, but somehow the banter of semi-mean things she semi-really meant and the smartass replies he sent back at her had sorta coalesced into a solid friendship. It was rad.

“How horribly subjective,” she commented by way of greeting. The second chair was situated across the table from him, but she pulled it over by his side before sitting down. Sammy kept her tone flat, doing her best Aladren Impression™, with flat logic and zero emotion. It was a running joke she had with him, making fun of the other Houses, even though she knew there were good in all of them. Jax, for example, was way more than some calculator with eyeballs. In fact, the only negative she’d ever thought about him was when he’d become Mr. Steal Yo Girl, but that was accidental anyway. Day by day, she forgave everyone a little bit more. She forgave herself some, too.

“Seriously,” she added with a laugh, opening her textbook haphazardly and not expressing any concern as it flopped over Jamie’s stuff, “I’m pretty sure any of that garbage could make somebody blow chunks. Wizards are gross, by the way. Who the hell looked at a doxy and thought ‘Hmm, that’s a cool little beetle lizard fairy dude. I’m gonna rip off his freakin’ wings, toss it in a pot with a bunch of other creature parts, and Dr. Frankenstein myself some fancy ooze’? Stuff’s nasty.” Technically, she could have asked the same question about a lot of stuff - eating eggs, honey, and dairy products was not a far cry from this - and it had crossed her mind once or twice, but at least those things weren’t a horrible, disgusting amalgamation of dead creatures. (Yes, she knew meat was also dead animals. Shush. At least those ones were good and also cooked.)

“Anywho, what are you working on today?” she asked, turning her head to face him, wearing quite the little smirk. She could have easily figured out the answer to the question herself, but alas, her book was still covering the majority of his assignment. She suppressed the laugh threatening to break through her playfully composure, although the urge broke the seal of her closed lips here and there.

Yup. I am important. Not small. by Jamie

Sammy did a good Aladren impression. He grinned at her serious analysis of the problem at hand. He gave a light punch on the arm when she called wizards gross.

“Yeah, but we can fly and just zap stuff better. Sucks to be your lot more. One of the Muggle Studies students had a book open about dentistry the other day. Something called braces. Looked like medieval torture implements for your mouth. Definitely glad to be a wizard – and of course, perfect already,” he added, giving her the benefit of his fully aligned, pearly white grin.

“I'm working on why it's unethical to use magic to turn someone into your willing, drooling sex slave, and how much trouble you'd be in if you did. Definitely less interesting than it sounds. Disappointingly few diagrams, and a tendency to focus on the more stabby side of the results. Ever smelt amortentia?” he asked. It didn't cross his mind that that was a rather personal question, given that he doubted he'd get an honest answer. Besides which, he already had a guess... “What's it for you, the fresh muddy scent of a Quidditch pitch, plus the slightest hint of a tastefully chosen aftershave? Perhaps the kind used by the dashing Seeker, whose protection you are charged with?”

That sounds like a deflection if ever I've heard one. by Sammy

“Those are some nice pearly whites you got there,” Sammy conceded. “But I can fix that pretty easily, and then you can try out some braces for yourself. They’re not that bad, by the way.” Her brother Ethan had them for most of his high school career and had been blessed by the Powers That Be to get them off before college. Not that it mattered, since he was going into it with a girlfriend and therefore had nobody to impress. “I’ll give you zapping stuff, though. All we’ve got is tasers, and they only let police have them, usually.”

She listened with surprising interest as Jamie explained his assignment, foregoing the joke of covering his work with hers and pulling her stuff off so he could actually see the interesting thing he was talking about. The nature of amortentia was exactly the nature of magic that she didn’t like: the kind that forced people to do stuff that they otherwise wouldn’t do. And obviously there were rules about it, as that was what his assignment discussed, just like there were rules about that Unforgivable Curse that controlled people, but rules didn’t always stop people. It was an unpleasant concept to imagine.

Amortentia’s smell was something she had not yet experienced, probably because brewing it was an Advanced thing and she was still Intermediate this year, but for the sake of the joke, especially as set up by Jamie’s inclusion of a particular Pecari Seeker’s aftershave, she could pretend otherwise. “Oh, yes, yes, Jamie!” she cried teasingly, clearly overly dramatic tone matching overly dramatic action as she rose to her feet. Her chair toppled behind her. “It’s you, Jamie! It’s you!” She threw herself across his lap, her arms flailing up as one knocked things off the table and the other (with much less force) smacked him in the face. “Take me, Jamie Park! I’m yours!”

Shut your face by Jamie

“Your job is to protect my beautiful face! Don’t you dare,” he chastised, when Sammy threatened to make it so he could try braces for himself. “Bull,” he called, when she said they weren’t that bad. He didn’t even know how they worked but he was pretty sure that having metal glued to your teeth could not be a pleasant experience or enhance your social life.

“Why, what’s a taser?” he asked, when she mentioned they had a way of zapping people. “Is it like a gun?” he asked. It sounded like some kind of weapon, and he knew they were popular, and also kind of ‘zapped’ people. In a very bloody way. He’d played some arcade games involving guns in his pre-Sonora days, when he’d hung out with kids from school, but he wasn’t familiar with these taser things.

He laughed at first, as she started playing along. Maybe she didn’t mean it, but any joke that got Sammy wriggling around in his lap was a win in his book.

“Yeah?” he grinned, putting his arms around her waist. “You better watch it. I might take you at your word,” he threatened, raising his eyebrows, and leaning in, still not sure whether this was a game, whether she was just joking and was going to push him away with an ‘ew, gross!’ if he actually tried to kiss her. At least at this point, he could still claim that he was messing about too.

Make me. by Sammy

His arms snaked around her waist, and she sat up some, very much still in his lap. “You’d better watch it. I might take you at your word.” His eyebrows raised and he leaned towards her. It was a joke - probably? - but Sammy felt her skin prickle into minor goosebumps regardless, warmth rushing to her cheeks. This was a joke, right? Right?

There wasn’t a lot of time to think, but a single thought occurred to her: would it be so bad if it wasn’t?

Jamie was a lot like her. Both Pecaris were passionate people, incredibly playful but incredibly dedicated. He was nice, too, or at least to her, all potentially mean things always said in jest. And he was so funny. Funnier than just about anybody she knew. Nobody else made Sammy laugh like he did. That meant a lot. He never made her feel weird about being weird, either. That meant a lot, too.

And also he was warm and safe and inches away from her, so she reacted. She draped her arms loosely off his shoulders and leaned in, closing the gap between their mouths, her crooked smile disappearing from view as it pressed against him. Her arms tightened, wrapping around his neck, and she did not back down: possible mistake or not - possible misinterpretation of a joke or not - she was committed to this. Kissing him felt pretty nice.

She did pull back eventually, though, not knowing the nuances of how to breathe and kiss for any extended amount of time. Her cheeks were practically glowing red now, but she was grinning. “Okay,” she said. “Um. Now say something.”

Challenge accepted by Jamie

Was this for real, or was it some kind of really weird and sexy game of chicken? He decided that was his defence if he actually kissed her and then she slapped him. After all, Jamie never lost a game or a dare. And she was pretty much daring him to kiss her, the way she was leaning in and wrapping her arms around him and-

He leaned in just as she did, and their lips connected. She was pulling him closer and he did the same, the arm around her waist squeezing her tighter, pulling her weight forward and - oh Merlin, did that feel good. He kissed her greedily - this was literally the best thing ever - but suddenly she was pulling away.

He blinked stupidly as she asked him something, his brain not really operating on the level of words and speaking. He just about registered that it was not telling him to piss off or take his hands off her, and so he didn’t.

“Do that again,” he grinned, conveniently the only string of words that were on his mind answering her question. Without waiting for any kind of reply, he kissed her again, one hand still firmly pressed against her back and the other in her hair, less for the romantic notion of stroking it and more to hold her to him. He kissed her mindlessly, lost in the absolute pleasure of there being a hot girl wriggling around in his lap, with her lips pressed on his. Eventually he realised he wasn’t really breathing and surfaced again for air.

“You’re really hot,” he grinned, arms still around her waist, planting a few kisses on her neck, “Beater babe,” he murmured, preparing to pull her in for another kiss. The common room had melted away and, had he remembered that they were doing this all pretty publically, he probably wouldn’t have cared. It was pretty cool that a girl like Sammy was giving him make out time. Perhaps if he started trying to remove bits of her clothing it would become a bad idea, but for now he was just lost in the idea of snogging her. “I like it when you wriggle,” he grinned, between kisses.

“Do that again.”

That was all he said, grinning. But he took the matter into his own hands and he kissed her again. Sammy found some sort of stride, moving with him as opposed to just moving. He was a lot more enthusiastic about it than she’d expecting, which helped melt away what trepidation she felt. It seemed he had been waiting for this moment, maybe for some time now. Good.

She couldn’t help a little squirm as his lips migrated down her neck, an uncharacteristic little giggle making its way out her open mouth. The nickname he murmured into her skin made her light up, reflecting everything she liked about being with Jamie. He made her feel beautiful and feminine without having to compromise her strength and athleticism. Sammy considered herself an odd balance of feminine and masculine attributes just based on her interests and upbringing, and being bisexual sometimes left her searching for stereotypical labels, the “butch vs. lipstick” business girls who liked girls often had to deal with. But she could be both with Jamie. He liked both sides of her.

His mouth came back to hers, and she kissed him with additional fervor. “Cool,” she fit sheepishly between the gaps and motions. “Don’t talk.” Like most of the world around them, homework was completely forgotten, and when she had to turn in a blank sheet later, she would feel a moment of embarrassment before realizing she hardly cared. Just this once, she’d take the zero.
