Irrelevant of her inner moral turmoil and bigger dreams, there was no way that Joella was willing to let the Quidditch Cup slip right through Pecari’s fingers this term. They’d made a breakthrough last year and now it was their turn to be the ever reigning Quidditch Champions, a title that Aladren had claimed for far too long.
Joella knew that her house had already shown more than enough interest to fill a team, but that by no means meant she wasn’t excited to see the new potential. As far as she had come, the sixth year wasn’t about to forget what it had been like when she was merely eleven years old and beside herself with excitement about becoming part of a proper Quidditch team!
She was keen for Luke to make it onto the team since she’d worked with him a lot over the past year, pleased with his interest in her sport, but she knew there was so much older competition that it was unlikely - there was no way Joella would ever be biased or lenient when it came to Quidditch because she wanted the best players she could possibly get her hands on, irrelevant of who she was friends with or related to. That was only fair, and fair a captain should be.
Even if she didn’t expect the first years to make the cut and get onto the team, she hoped some of them would sign up because reserves were never a bad thing and they would still train alongside the team, which would definitely benefit them in the future when spots opened up. That being said, the Pecari captain was not completely ready to rule out all chances of the youngest students in the school making the team. No player, besides herself (and the assistant captain, she supposed) was guaranteed a space on the team, although it was more than likely they would remain so it wasn’t worth actually telling them this.
She had one thing to do before she could settle in and catch up with her roommates after the Opening Feast and that was to add the final touches to her mostly pre-prepared Quidditch sign-up sheet and then put it up on the notice board in the common room, so that it would be ready for even the earliest birds tomorrow morning. She also had a letter to write to a lucky teammate but that, she felt, could wait for just a few more hours.
Calling all Pecaris!
Joella had written at the top of the sign-up sheet. She had written in clear capitals, a sparkling gold that was bound to catch the eyes of her housemates. Her best subject being Charms, the now-Advanced student tested her abilities by charming the border into animated Quidditch figures on brooms with the various balls whizzing about. She didn’t let the aesthetics spread across the parchment very far, however, because she wanted to leave plenty of space for signing up - confident given the numbers in recent years that they would once again have plenty of interest.
Join last year’s champions, the Pecari Quidditch team, and help us win that Quidditch Cup again! Try-outs will be held on the pitch this Saturday at noon. All levels are welcome. Please give your name, year and preferred position below.
She wrote her own name and details at the top of the designated signing space as an example, a small thing like being the first name on the paper reminding her that she was now captain… Joella smiled and was suddenly filled with determination that she had an amazing two years ahead of her.
Ben's first stop the day after the feast was the Pecari Bulletin board, and he was pleased to find what he was looking for posted already. "Sweet, second on the list!" he crowed, his inability to sleep in this morning suddenly not seeming such a burden as when he'd been staring up at the ceiling and cursing the time difference that made 'ridiculously early hour' here into 'wake-up time' to his body.
With Atlas graduated, there was even a good chance he'd finally get to have the position his father and uncle had held.
Ben Pierce, 3rd Year, Beater! (or Chaser, but Beater!)
That, he felt would let Joella know what he really wanted to have (though in truth she probably already did), but it should also show he was open to the possibility of continuing on a chaser if need be. He was a team player, after all.
Feeling much happier now that he was officially signed up for another year of Sporting, he headed on out with a bounce in his step as he made his way to the Cascade Hall to get breakfast now that it was finally open.
After sending off her letter and little reward with Joella’s owl, Sammy bounded downstairs to the Common Room, still fully clad in her pajamas. (Batman: the classiest of all sleepwear products, especially when they were as cools as hers. She even had a cape.) She was honestly surprised at herself that she hadn’t thought to look yesterday, but coming back was always such an eventful time that it must have just slipped her mind. Or else maybe she’d thought it wouldn’t go up until Joella had announced the Assistant Captain. Which was her, by the way. So excited!
Either way, she was here now, grinning ear to ear at a piece of paper like a crazy person. She was excited to see how much Ben wanted to be a Beater, and while of course positions would have to be based on skill, the prospect of being Beater Buddies with her younger friend was super exciting. And she got input on that position business this year! Ahh!
She didn’t have a writing utensil with her but found one sitting on a nearby table. “Hopefully your owner doesn’t come looking for you in the next twenty seconds,” she muttered to it as she positioned it in her fingers and leaned toward the sheet.
Sammy Meeks, fifth year, Beater :)
She was horribly tempted to include her new title, but since Joella hadn’t written “Captain” by her own name, Sammy figured it was best not to show off. Still, she couldn’t wait to take on a more active role within her Quidditch family. And standing by the side of her friend (on whom she toooooootally didn’t have a crush) was going to be amazing. She had no delusions-... well, she had a few delusions about ruling the school as a Quidditch power couple, but she mostly knew that last part wasn’t really going to happen. But she could still dream while they worked together to achieve the first part: Pecari was going to rule the school, at least in terms of Quidditch.
To no one, she glowed, “Welcome to the age of the boar.”
Last year Lily had been a reserve which had been fun, but not that fun. She didn't get to experience the thrill of matches, but she knew her turn would come. Eventually. For now she would just have to be satisfied with watching. She did ask Jozua incessantly what it was like, being on the Teppenpaw team. Even though they were in opposing houses and Lily believed Pecari was the best (they had won the Quidditch Cup last year), she was very glad they were both playing together.
The morning after the Opening Feast, Lily woke up excited for the sign-up sheet. She bounded down into the common room in her pyjamas and checked the noticeboard. As expected, Joella had posted the notice and Lily immediately scribbled her name down.
Lily Spencer, 2nd year, Chaser or Beater
Like the year before, she didn't have a particular preference. She would take any position that would give her a spot on the team. Anything but Keeper. After a pause, she added that to her name.
Lily Spencer, 2nd year, Chaser or Beater (open to any position but keeper)
Last year’s champions. Jamie grinned broadly as he saw the words on the sheet. His sixth year at Sonora had been his best by far and he was determined to see his seventh out in similar style. Everyone had ragged on him so much at the beginning, and last year he had shown them all just what he could do. Of course, it had helped that he had swallowed some of his attitude and actually trained properly, but to Jamie it had still felt like taking the place in the world that he had always deserved.
Jamie Park, 7th year, Seeker #1
And he didn’t just mean that he was starting string in Pecari either. Right now, he was number one in the school. Better than his best friend and friendly rival, Shino. Better than dweeby Jake - sure, he had Head Boy, but who cared about that compared to ruling on the pitch? And, best of all, better than Clark Dill, the Aladren Golden boy and Pecari’s long running rival. And even though John and Clark had always been besties, John was now Aladren’s captain, which meant it was two for the price of one, and that crushing them into the ground like the dorks they were all the sweeter.
Ingrid felt really pumped for the new Quidditch season. Even though she wasn’t assistant captain, she hadn’t ever expected to be, and it was such an unexpected honour that Joella had even considered giving it to her. She was excited that she might get more to do this year. Kind of as assistant-assistant-captain, and Joella’s protegee. Plus there was that shiny Quidditch cup in the common room, which was definitely going to inspire everyone to give their best so that it could stay for another year.
She wasted no time signing up.
Ingrid Wolseithcrafte, fourth year, Chaser.
So far there were no new players but it was early days, plus they’d had reserves last year, so overall hopefully they would be able to fill the two vacant spots. It still felt so weird to think of a team without Liliana, but also to think about the way in which Liliana had exited the school… Ingrid wondered what had happened to her since. What had family had said or done… Families disagreed sometimes, and Merlin knew she got fed up sometimes of all the boring propriety stuff, especially as she wasn’t naturally good at it, but she still knew that to disappoint one’s family, and by extension to lose those ties that she’d been born with, that defined who she was, was the worst thing she could imagine - it would be so sad to be famililess. What boy was worth risking that for? She tried to push those thoughts out of her mind. They needed to focus, and to have another awesome year on the pitch.

Luke was pretty pleased with his sorting. He seemed to have landed himself in the coolest house because, now he came to think of it, the others sounded pretty lame. Although, just because he didn’t want to be a part of those houses, it certainly didn’t mean he wasn’t interested in being friends with people from them - he’d seen some pretty girls get sorted elsewhere and was fairly sure that Crotalus was all boys so there was no doubt friend potential there.
The first year had been forewarned that his chances of being Beater would be slim if he got sorted into Pecari, which was a shame because that was easily his favourite position. He’d played a lot of Quidditch over the past few years in preparation for Sonora because growing up he’d been more involved with Quodpot, which for some reason his new school did not offer, and had made a conscious decision to change that so he could get himself a spot on the team.
Not only had he received a lot of help from Joella but he’d also made solid friends with the Kinsell brothers when they moved into the neighbourhood. Those boys knew their magical sports inside out and they were also super rich so had all the facilities and equipment, which was totally awesome. Luke liked to think the idea of aiming a bludger at Zane Kinsell’s head was not the only reason he loved the Beater position so much, however.
Luke knew there was no rush to sign up for Quidditch since Joella was the captain and already knew his intentions and the try-outs weren’t until Saturday anyway. He was never the rushing type really. The first year did check the sheet whenever he walked past, checking to see new names that appeared since the last time he looked and curious as to what positions they were hoping for.
When he did finally come to signing himself up, he couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed knowing there was essentially no chance of him playing Beater for THREE WHOLE YEARS!
It wasn’t the end of the world. Sure, he liked Quidditch and he liked playing Beater but it didn’t mean as much to him as surfing did so he could cope with any position really, so long as he was on the team. Luke was an athletic kind of guy and knew full well that he could do well in whatever position he ended up in.
Luke Powell, 1st year, Beater (or Keeper, or any)
The only reason he specified Keeper rather than the other two remaining positions was because he could see that no one else had expressed an interest in it so far, meaning he probably had more chance with getting that than anything else. If that was what would get him on the Pecari Quidditch team, he would totally take it.
