Captain Liliana Bannister

May 05, 2016 11:18 AM
Liliana had made a charmed sign-up sheet for Quidditch over the summer and had made sure to carefully preserve it for the journey to Sonora. It smelled a little beachy since she had been working on it in between dips in the ocean, but it did not appear shabby in the least and she had been sure to let Joella know that she was free after the Feast to catch up with her roommates since Liliana had taken up Joella’s pre-feast time playing Quidditch.

She waited until she was sure that every last Pecari had headed up to bed before coming down the staircase into the common room and fastening the brown and gold sign to the announcement board. Looking at it now she was worried it would be a bit too much but she knew that once other papers started going up, it was good to have an attractive, attention catching sign. In sparkling gold letters she had spelled out “Pecari Quidditch Team” and “You” and in smaller black letters she had written “the” and “wants” so that the top part of the sign read:

the PECARI QUIDDITCH TEAM wants YOU

Underneath this she had posted some spaces for people to write their names’ down and between the now-blank list and the header she had written:

Sonora’s best Quidditch team is looking for reserves especially reserve Beaters and Keepers to replace the outgoing team members. Try-outs to be held Saturday, September 13th at 8.30am on the Quidditch Pitch. Returning players also requested to try-out.

In addition to the important information, she had charmed a drawing of a wild boar, the house animal, so run in from the left edge of the paper and try to use it’s tusks to uproot the header. After failing, it would squeal a little and run off the other edge of the page only to return a little later and try to uproot the words again. There were also charmed Quaffles and Bludgers that zoomed around the words, the Quaffles taking time to hop through any open loop in Liliana’s handwriting and the Bludgers attempting to knock letters out. As the members of Pecari house would add their names to the list, the little balls would do the same thing to the names as well.

She had also pre-written her name on the paper to give the house an example of how they should write theirs though she knew many of them would already know from previous years:

Captain Liliana Bannister, 7th year, Keeper

Since she was the captain, there was also a tiny Golden Snitch that appeared once an hour to zoom around her name and then hide itself behind the dot of the ‘I’ in ‘Bannister.’ She personally thought this was a very nice, subtle touch and she stepped back from the wall to admire her handiwork before heading up to bed. She couldn’t wait to see who signed up next. Before the feast she had told her teammates that they would be starting practises the third day of school in order to allow them to settle in. She was planning on holding fair try-outs, meaning if a new player performed better than one of the existing members she would have to bump them, but she really didn’t want to have to do that (even to Park) and so she wanted to make sure her team was in the best shape they could be.

Lily Spencer

When Lily had begun planning what she wanted from Sonora, she knew she wanted to achieve three things: join the Quidditch team, make loads of friends and join at least one club. The latter two were going to take a bit more time, but the first was her dream. Ever since she was young she’d been riding a broom with or without her parents’ permission. If Adam didn’t let her ride his broom, she would steal his and take it out when he was sleeping or out with his mates. She’d gotten rather good at it, flying, and Quidditch was the next sport she couldn’t wait to join. Because she was the baby of the family, she was hardly allowed to do anything that might cause injury, like Quidditch. At least, her mum tried to stop her. But she had watched and watched her brothers play and learnt the different positions and recently even practised throwing a rubber ball around whenever she was alone and had taken her brother’s broom out.

After the exciting and exhausting Welcoming Feast, Lily woke up with just one thing on her mind: the noticeboard. She bounded down to the common room still in her pyjamas and checked. Sign-ups were up and decorated very creatively. Lily couldn’t stop grinning. She wanted to be the Quidditch Captain and one of the Head students like Adam had been his seventh year, but right now she couldn’t wait to join the team.

It took a moment for her to decide which position she wanted to play. Having never played Quidditch before, not really, she didn’t know if she would be a better Beater, Chaser or Seeker. She didn’t even know which position she liked. She hoped it wouldn’t deter Liliana Bannister from accepting her on the team - did they accept everyone? - if she couldn’t decide.

Ben Pierce

Ben had gone into the first practice with high expectations for his first year of actually playing Quidditch, rather than just practicing it, but between the Jamie thing causing tensions in the rest of the team and Ben totally embarrassing himself in front of Sammy Meeks, he had briefly wondered if he'd maybe do better just starting up a baseball club and being done with it, but then things had gotten better and he no longer felt that he had embarrassed himself off the team.

He still wanted to play. Quidditch was the only sport Sonora offered in an organized manner and he wasn't going to let a stupid comment drive him away from his only real chance to play it.

He couldn't entirely shake the baseball club idea once it had been born, but that would be in addition to rather than instead of playing Quidditch. He made a note to maybe talk to Gabe about it and see if he wanted to co-lead with him, as Gabe also knew how baseball worked and Ben figured having two players who knew what they were doing would work better for organizing pick-up teams.

But Quidditch sign-ups would come first and Ben found the sheet first thing the next morning after the Feast. He added his name to the list with no hesitation.

Ben Hippo Pierce, 2nd Year, Beater (preferably) or Chaser (like last year)

He still hoped to follow his Dad and Uncle as a team Beater, so he put that position first so Joella would know he was waiting for that spot once Atlas graduated and maybe they'd have him practicing as beater reserve in case either Atlas or Sammy couldn't play this year for whatever reason. But if he didn't get Beater, he still wanted to play so that was where Chaser came in.

Killian Everett

Killian wasn’t sure what to make of what he’d heard about Quidditch. It sounded a little like soccer, where there was a ball, and people trying to get the ball through the goals. But, unlike soccer with a big rectangular square for the goal, there were three rings that were sort of like basket ball rings turned upward.

And like baseball, in that bats were used. And like dodgeball, in that the people with bats tried to hit other balls at the players who were playing. He had no clue what to compare the snitch too, and to be perfectly honest, his entire experience with sports focused around P.E. and even then, he wasn’t the most interested student.

In his opinion, the game sounded like the most bizarre mix of different sports ever. Yet, somehow, it also came together in its own unique thing. Not just a random mashup of other games thrown together haphazardly, but a complete whole like but unlike anything he’d ever experienced before.

Still, as little interest he had in normal sports, Quidditch added yet one more element. Flying! And that made all the difference.

Well that and the super awesome poster. Even if he hadn’t the slightest idea what Quidditch was, he’d still want to put his name on the paper just to watch the boar try to root it up. That was just too cool for words.

Killian Everett – 1st year, whatever

Killian wrote, not able to recall what all the positions were and not really caring either way. As long as he got to fly, that would be enough. And for the first time ever, he’d get a chance to play sports!

As long as no one told his mom.

Ingrid Wolseithcrafte

Ingrid was super excited for the upcoming Quidditch season, although found herself having to cross her fingers that all the teams would have enough to play. Pecari seemed safe enough, in fact it was really just looking for reserves, but in the yearbook last year Teppenpaw had had enough players and Aladren hadn’t… If Teppenpaw split with Crotalus, that meant they needed to form a full team, or join with the depleted Aladren forces… Ingrid wanted to beat Aladren. It was on her list of life goals to face her brother on the pitch and win. A victory by default, where Aladren had no team to field (or was something stupid like Crotden) was a totally hollow victory. She wanted to beat Theodore good and properly

The Pecari sign up sheet was brilliant, not only for Liliana’s handiwork (she stayed for a couple of minutes after writing her name to watch the various graphics interact with it) but the fact that they already had a couple of new players signed up. Lily Spencer, she guessed, was related to the other Spencers, who were Quidditch playing and respectable, and Ingrid was excited to see that the girl in the family was allowed to play too. She wondered whether she could be Lily’s role-model in the same way that Liliana was hers… Though Liliana was still here, so naturally Lily would end up looking up to her too, and then there was Joella after her. She was a lot closer in age to Lily than she was to Liliana. Maybe they’d be friends instead. Friends was also good, although she liked the thought of someone thinking of her as the cool older Quidditch player, to look up to.

Jamie Park

May 13, 2016 10:51 PM
Being a sixth year seemed kind of cool. He didn’t have as many classes, and had free periods. Ok, “study periods,” but whatever. He wasn’t the one sitting RATS this year, and he deserved a break after the amount of effort he’d put into his CATS (which he’d had to do as secretly as possible to avoid hurting his reputation). But his mum had been pleased enough with his grades to buy him a new broom, and give him a quiet summer, so it had all paid off.

He’d had some chances to practise over the summer, his parents business being in an all-wizarding shopping district, although people disapproved of you zooming down the street full speed and pulling stunts, so the opportunities weren’t as good as he’d have liked - mostly he’d practised nose dives and tight cornering in the tiny yard and back alleys behind the shop. He really thought he might pull a good Wronskey Feint this year, although even Jamie wasn’t fool enough to risk crashing a brand new broom, so he hadn’t quite skimmed the concrete in his practices.

Feeling confident - because, as Jamie Park, there was rarely anything else much to feel - he added his name to the list.

Jamie Park, 6th year, Seeker.

He watched to see if the Snitch would gravitate to his name now that he’d written that, and was slightly annoyed to see it continued to only circle Liliana’s.

Assistant Capt. Joella Curtis

May 16, 2016 4:09 PM
Joella had enjoyed creating a bright Quidditch sign-up sheet with the Pecari Captain at the start of last term but she was rather glad when Liliana had told her she wouldn’t be required on the first evening back this time. She had simply needed to catch up with her roommates after an entire summer apart. Joella had grown so used to sharing a bedroom with two other girls that it was slightly strange when she went home and had a room all to herself.

So far this year Liliana seemed very organised and Joella was keen to see that all the older girl’s work paid off. She knew that Aladren were one player short this year but forced herself to be confident that they would find a new addition to make their seven. As much as she disliked the rival team, it wouldn’t be much fun without them. Pecari were going to beat Aladren this year, they just had to.

The sign-up sheet was impressive and the fifth year smiled when she saw it. She was down from her dormitory unusually late for the first morning back, for the past four years her routine being to get downstairs as soon as possible to eagerly sign up for the Pecari team. Today’s slowness was partially due to a lack of sleep that had led to her waking later and also the fact that she now took longer to get ready in the mornings than she used to.

Joella’s eyes scanned the list of names already signed up, knowing that Pecari would easily be making a full team again this year and likely have a decent bunch of reserves too. She noted the name Lily Spencer with curiosity, guessing she was a relative of Adam’s and wondering if she was his sister. She spared a moment to try and remember if he’d ever mentioned a little sister but couldn’t recall whether or not he had. If it was the case, she expected the first year would already be confident with the game.

Prepared with a quill already in hand, Joella wrote her own name.

Joella Curtis, 5th year, Chaser

It was rather cool knowing she didn’t have to try out for the team since she was Assistant Captain and would therefore be helping to organise the try-outs. Joella had never really doubted her position on the team in the past but it was nice now to have a solid position which allowed her to really contribute to the team.
