Unmaking sense of things [possibly tag Chloe]
by Ji-Eun Park
Ji-Eun’s head was spinning. It had started innocently enough with a water room date with Arnold. They’d been having a picnic by the lake, when he’d mentioned what a shame it was that she hadn’t been able to come to the pool party over the summer - an innocent assumption on his part that she’d been held up with chores or something at home. For all he’d tried to downplay it as “just a kids party,” it had still hurt to find out that everyone from their little gang had been invited except her - whilst Charlotte hadn’t attended either, she was really only part of the group by association with Emrys, whereas Ji-Eun was supposed to be Chloe’s best friend. Arnold had only dug himself deeper when he’d tried to excuse Chloe’s forgetfulness by saying how much she had on her mind right now. The fact that he knew what was going on with her best friend when she didn’t had done nothing to help the situation.
Ji-Eun had had a nagging doubt for a while that something was wrong. Chloe kept making excuses to avoid her at mealtimes. It wasn’t consistently so, but Ji-Eun counted the Opening Feast amongst those occasions, and so hadn’t worked out that the common denominator was when she was with Arnold. As far as she could see, the common denominator was her, and the fact that Chloe had left her out over the summer, and was confiding her secrets in Arnold instead of her seemed only to confirm this. She had no idea what she had done wrong, and had always seen her and Chloe’s friendship as fairly open. The only thing she could think of was the Head Girl badge, but that didn’t tie in with Chloe leaving her out over the summer, as it hadn’t even happened at that point. All she knew was that Chloe seemed suddenly not to want to talk to her, or even really be around her, and she had no idea why.
She had managed not to cry in front of Arnold. She wasn’t really sure he counted as ‘public’ but she’d always been taught to control her emotions in front of other people. However, she had cut their date short after his revelations. She wanted some space to be alone, to try to process this. To let her feelings out. The only place that came to mind was her room - the place that had always been a safe little cocoon. She ran up the stairs, praying that Chloe would be out, and gratefully collapsed onto her bed when she found the room empty. Still, she didn’t feel safe, or private.
“Depulso!” she cast, sending her trunk to barricade the door with a sweep of her wand. It slammed heavily, as she lost control. The sight of Chloe’s empty bed - of how the sight of all her things had previously meant friendship and comfort, and now meant confusion and isolation - was enough to tip her over the edge, and she buried her face into her pillow, crying and wondering what she’d done to make her best friend turn her back on her like this.

All god-modding is based on chatzy conversations of characters' current behaviour (e.g. avoiding at mealtimes) or direct approval from the relevant author (the conversation with Arnold).
