An Owl for Adam Spencer by Stan

While the students were enjoying their feast on the first night back at Sonora, Stan was making his way to the Pecari common room. He had several letters from Coach Olivers to deliver this year and the scruffy little owl took the opportunity to spread its wings after a humid summer in Chicago with Florence. His beady eyes were alert when he got to Pecari and he faithfully dropped the letter off on Adam Spencer's desk for the boy to find after the feast.

Captain Adam Spencer,

Congratulations! You have been promoted to Quidditch Captain. This year, you will be responsible for putting up signup sheets, holding tryouts, reserving the pitch for your team, and hosting practices throughout the year. You will, of course, have the help of an assistant captain. I would recommend Liliana Bannister.

If you would rather another assist you or don’t feel you can perform these duties as Captain, please owl me so I can make sure the right people get their badges before the season officially begins. You may tell your assistant of her promotion yourself. Congratulations and good luck.

Coach Florence Olivers

Exciting news for Liliana. by Adam Spencer

Despite the new golden badge on his robe, Adam hadn’t found the same joy in the feast as he had during previous years. He wasn’t going to say anything to his mates about it; there wasn’t anything to say, really, except attempting to explain his inexplicable emotions. Adam slipped his hands into his pockets as he walked back to the commons alone, wondering whether or not it would be possible to treat Ginny exactly the same as they’d always been, save last year of course. The click of his shoes against the stone floor distracted him, then the cool desert air as he walked outside and into the labyrinth.

He and Francesca would have loads of fun being Head students together and Adam tried to concentrate on that. He didn’t want to spend his last year at Sonora wondering whether he ought to share his confused feelings with a witch who already had a boyfriend.

When he stepped foot into the familiar common room, he was reminded then of his new role as captain and raced the rest of the way to his bedroom, taking the steps two at a time. He burst into the bedroom and found the letter from Coach Olivers on his desk. Ripping the letter open was easy, and Coach Olivers’s decision was indisputable. Liliana had always been a faithful member of the team and Adam had never doubted her abilities. Having a Keeper as Captain wasn’t quite as popular as other positions, but knowing how well she enjoyed the game he thought she’d do a brilliant job. Her enthusiasm, of course, helped loads. Grinning, he raced back down the stairs eager to find Liliana and tell her the good news.

When he spotted her, he folded up the letter again and walked over to her delicately with his hands behind his back. “Hi Liliana,” he said casually. He combed his fingers through his dark hair, but he could hardly contain his excitement. “I wanted to ask you: how would you feel being captain of the Quidditch team next year? I think you’d be brilliant at it and evidently Coach Olivers thinks the same.”

News of my own for Adam. by Liliana Bannister

Liliana had just walked in the common room with the new first years and Professor Olivers, debating on whether she wanted to go up to bed early or not when Adam came down the stairs, apparently searching for someone to talk to. It was only after Professor Olivers dismissed the first years that Liliana realized Adam was looking for her and she turned to her teammate smiling. “Hey yourself,” she replied amused at the way he was behaving wondering if something had been slipped into his drink at dinner that night.

His news, however, made his behavior make perfect sense and Liliana’s face split into a huge grin and she nodded emphatically. Assistant Captain had been the role she’d coveted for that year—being named prefect had been a surprise, one that was not unwelcome as she knew it would please her family and it was nice to be recognized in such a way, but it wasn’t a position she had particularly wanted nor was it a position she felt she was truly suited for. Assistant Captain, on the other hand, that was something she knew she could do well.

“Really?” she asked, mirth shining in her eyes. “I think that would be just…just…absolutely stupendous!” Despite herself she let out a happy laugh when suddenly it occurred to her. She’d talked to Rupert about switching positions but not Adam. “Speaking of Quidditch though,” she said her tone growing more serious. “I wanted to talk to you about switching positions. I know I’ve been a Keeper for three years now and I do love it, but I’d also love to try out Chaser. I mean,” she said, falling back on the speech she had give Rupert last year during their team party. “I know how a Keeper thinks so that could be useful during game time, and I’ve played it with my cousins before because since I’m the youngest they always stick me at the position they have left over which sometimes turns out to be Chaser, and this whole past summer with them we played two on two which didn’t have beaters, seekers, or keepers so I’ve been practicing, and…” she trailed off realizing she was rambling. “And you probably didn’t need that much information, but what do you think? I won’t switch if you don’t think that’s a good idea, but I’d like to just see how it goes?”

Her eyes grew large and worried as she waited for his response.

Giving feedback. by Adam

Liliana's reaction was exactly what Adam had been hoping for. It made him want to jump up and down, but he just smiled widely watching as she laughed. But quickly her tone grew serious and Adam had a fleeting moment of panic. Was she going to tell him she couldn't do it after all? Or that she no longer wanted to be a part of the team?

Luckily it wasn't anything that serious and Adam nodded along as he listened. He imagined playing with Liliana on the pitch. She'd been a brilliant Keeper over the past few years and whilst she was good at it, he knew she would excel in whatever position she played. Chasers needed a special connection; they had to learn how to know the others' move before it even happened. Practising with a new Chaser and teaching them all of those skills would take some time. The good thing was, he and Liliana were already friends, giving them a good foundation to begin with.

It took a moment after Liliana had trailed off for Adam to form his thoughts into coherent words. "Since we're looking to fill the Chaser position now I don't think that would be implausible," he said very diplomatically. "I think you could be great at it, but since everyone needs to participate in try-outs we'll see how you do." He grinned at her, showing he was teasing. "It all depends on the sign-ups though. I'll do my best to get you into that open Chaser position, but if no one wants to be Keeper you'll have to do it again. You're great at it, but I can understand you wanting a change."

Adam stuck out his hand then and his brown eyes twinkled. "Congratulations on Assistant Captain, mate. Whichever position you play, you'll be brilliant at it."
