An Owl for Rupert Princeton by Stan

On the night of the Welcoming Feast, Florence’s scruffy little owl made his rounds delivering letters to the Quidditch captains. This was Florence’s third year as the stand-in Quidditch coach, if last year was counted, and now she and Stan had gotten the hang of it. Stan, short for Stanislavsky, was a faithful bird even if he had to adjust to the intense Arizona temperatures each year.

After the feast, Rupert would find his letter on his desk. It would hardly be a surprise to the former Assistant Captain. It would be a little more difficult, however, to recommend an Assistant Captain for him. Florence did feel sorry that she couldn’t make the Anns assistants, but it wouldn’t make sense to make either of them an assistant since they were all in the same year.

Captain Rupert Princeton,

Congratulations, you have been promoted to Quidditch Captain. This year, you will be responsible for putting up signup sheets, holding tryouts, reserving the pitch for your team, and hosting practices throughout the year. You will, of course, have the help of an assistant captain. I would recommend Adam Spencer. If you would rather another assist you or you don’t feel you can perform these duties as Captain, please owl me and I will make sure the right people get this badges before the season officially begins. You may tell your assistant of his or her promotion yourself. Congratulations and good luck.

Coach Florence Olivers

Rupert Princeton & Adam Spencer

Blood runs thicker. by Rupert Princeton & Adam Spencer

The feast had been quite fun for Rupert and had left his head swimming afterwards. He had hoped to walk back to their common room with her, but Rup had ripped himself away to leave a bit earlier and get some rest. The ride from England to Arizona was always tiresome no matter how many times a year he made the trip. The air outside was pleasantly cool and Rup tried to clear his mind. The ball would be approaching sooner than later and by now Rupert would be expected to take a date. But the Quidditch season was closer and he couldn’t help but be excited to play with his team again. This would, he hoped, be a good year.

As he approached the Pecari entrance, he heard someone call him. It was Adam and Rupert lifted a hand. “Hey, mate, congratulations on making Prefect,” said Rupert as soon as he saw his cousin. “It’ll be a tough job, but rewarding, I’m sure.”

“Thanks,” said Adam with a smile. “And congrats to you on making captain.”

“Isn’t official quite yet,” said Rupert with a smile. He said the password and allowed Adam to enter the common room before following him in. “I’m going to check my dorm room first, but I’ll see you in the common room, yeah?” Rupert saluted Adam and took off to his dorm room, eager to see Coach Olivers’s letter. As expected, it was there on his desk and he opened it. What surprised him wasn’t that he was the captain, though the title certainly made him swell with pride, but that Olivers had recommended Adam Spencer to be his assistant.

Rup eagerly raced down to the common room in search of his cousin. When he spotted Adam, he approached him and greeted him with a pat on the back. “A second congratulations goes to you, cousin,” he said with a large smile. He handed the letter over to let him read it.

The surprise on Adam’s face was priceless and he beamed after his initial surprise. “I accept,” said Adam as he handed the letter back. He did a subdued fist pump, making Rupert laugh.

“Looks like we’ll be working together, then! I’ll write Professor Olivers now.”

Rupert grabbed a piece of parchment from his room and came back down to pen the letter. Adam joined him, watching as Rupert quickly wrote their acceptance reply. “I had a chat with Annette during the feast and she’s really looking forward to playing this year,” he said. After a moment, Adam sighed. “I wish one of the Anns could have been the assistant,” he said forlornly.

“Yeah, I’m sorry about that too. They’re both really talented and I’m looking forward to playing with them again. But we can’t hold onto regrets; we can only look forward. I think you’re going to be brilliant as my assistant.” Rupert patted his cousin on the shoulder before releasing his owl from his cage. “Come on, Ozzy, it isn’t far,” said Rup reassuringly as his tawny owl fluffed his feathers drowsily. Ozzy hooted once and grabbed the letter in his claws. Rup opened a window and the owl flew out.

“He’s small, but he loves me,” said Rup with a big smile. He turned and pat his cousin on the shoulder. “Now let’s get started on the sign-up sheet, shall we?”
