Making a song and dance of it (tag Chloe) by Ji-Eun Park

Ji-Eun lay stretched out on her bed, studying the magazine with excitement. Her favourite band had a new song out and there was a feature on it, and a free sample, as well as numerous pictures that she could cut out and add to the collection of various idols that plastered the wall beside her bed. She was still undecided whether or not to do any dancing at her culture booth but, if she did, this would be perfect. The moves were simple but encapsulated the style she loved perfectly. There were lots of little hand gestures, and the whole effect was so cute and so... K-Pop. She studied the girls as they moved around in their pictures, trying to imitate their hands. She'd need to go to the MARS room to work on it properly but she could practise little bits here. Even if she decided not to do it at the fair, she wanted to learn it for her own enjoyment.

Once she thought she had grasped it reasonably well, she drew her wand. The magazine let you play the song a certain number of times as a promo, after which, you had to buy it. She tapped the centre of the page, and the music started. It was definitely a summer song – all happy and bouncy. She mouthed the words that she'd picked up thus far, and tried to time her hand gestures to the right parts of the song, just a beat or two behind where the band got them.

She'd got about halfway through when she heard the door. Chloe wasn't exactly gifted with entering a room quietly, or chose not to. Ji-Eun liked her room-mate reasonably well. The girl was definitely kind and well-meaning, two traits which were not to be sniffed at. Ji-Eun often struggled to get a word in edgeways but then, she never was sure she had much to say. Sometimes it was a little full on but if Chloe's rambunctiousness got too much, there were other places she could go for peace and quiet. Ji-Eun tapped the centre of the magazine again, halting the song in its progress. She wasn't sure that Chloe shared her taste in music, and she didn't want to force it on her.

“Hi,” she said softly, smiling at her.

OOC – I double checked with Chloe's author that one would always hear her coming...

Is it any good? by Chloe Jareau

Chloe had a very happy day so far. She was just coming back from visiting her mother and they had a fantastic time together. Chloe and her mother spent some time going over the animals that Chloe wanted in her petting zoo that she was doing with her siblings. Her mother was kind enough to set time aside to review what was appropriate and what wasn’t. She was even going to talk to Professor Meade for Chloe to make sure everything was set up correctly. After they had their talk, her mother braided her hair in a mermaid style braid.

Chloe and her mother looked nothing alike. Her mother with her dark curls and hazel eyes while Chloe had straight blonde hair and bright blue eyes. But anyone could say that Chloe resembled her father, which was entirely true. But the truth of the matter was that her mother was not her biological mother, but the moment Kiva adopted her, her biological mother was nothing more than a picture in a frame. Kiva wanted Chloe to cut her hair as it was so long she could practically sit on it, but Chloe did not want that. Her blonde hair was her mother’s hair. Her real mother’s hair. If she cut it, she would no longer have that connection to the woman she had never met. Or, at least, did not remember. So, to compromise, Chloe promised to do more with her hair to keep it from getting knotted and out of her face.

She entered into the dorm room with a greeting of hello to her roommate and a toss of her bag onto her bed (which promptly missed and fell against the floor). She paused when she heard the music, realizing that Ji-Eun was listening to something on her side of the room. Chloe smiled at her when Ji-Eun greeted her and headed in her direction.

“How is your day going?” Chloe asked before jumping into her day. She wasn’t trying to be rude or anything like that, it was just that whenever Chloe had so much on her mind, she needed to let it flow right out of her or else she would just explode. Usually, Ayita was the one with whom Chloe purged her thoughts out at now since they shared a common house, but right after classes and during meal time, Emery was often the victim of these moments. Since neither of them was currently here, Ji-Eun would be the one she would excited tell about her meeting with her mother and of the creatures she could have at the fair.

“I’m just so excited about it! It’s going to be so much fun. I hope people will come see the animals.” Chloe was saying before she caught sight of the magazine. “Oh, I heard the music when I came in. What were you listening to?” She asked her, this time, actually pausing to hear what her roommate had to say.

I'm not really sure yet... by Ji-Eun Park

“Your hair looks pretty,” she smiled at Chloe, as the other girl walked in and tossed her bag on the bed. “Could you teach me to do it like that?” she asked. Ji-Eun was pretty good with a lot of hairstyles but that particular type of plaiting wasn't one she'd seen before. She'd never really noticed Chloe being that into her hair before, even though it was so long and beautiful, but perhaps she was, and perhaps they could teach each other a few things. She might even get to play with Chloe's hair that way... It was so long, and such a shiny, golden colour.... Ji-Eun was rather envious of it, as her own was the same dull black as virtually everyone she knew back home. To have shining blonde hair...

Ji-Eun opened her mouth to reply to Chloe but hadn't managed to draw breath before Chloe carried on talking. This was so common a state of affairs that Ji-Eun was starting to feel that actually trying to reply to Chloe within the first five minutes of her entering a room was a wasted effort. She tried not to let it bother her. Chloe was naturally excitable, and Ji-Eun was more of a listener anyway. She was sure the other girl wasn't trying to be rude. And she usually gave Ji-Eun space to answer after she'd talked herself out, so it wasn't like she didn't care to hear it at all.

Chloe's ramble didn't go on too long, although she jumped about a bit without making it clear what she was talking about. By the end of her sentence, Ji-Eun had figured she meant she was excited about the fair, not her day. She had become used to speaking Chloe-ese over the last few months, especially as she didn't tend to have a chance to ask for clarification as they went along.

“Oh... um, it's the song by a band I like,” she confessed a little shyly. She'd meant to stifle the music quickly enough not to bother Chloe with it. She tentatively held out the magazine, even though it would be utterly meaningless to the other girl. Not only was she willing to bet that Chloe's entire knowledge of K-Pop came from the pictures by her own bed, and any questions she'd answered on them, but also it was written in Korean. “I'm going to learn the dance,” she explained, deciding to omit that she was considering it for the fair, just in case she didn't see that through.

“I'm excited for the fair too,” she added, returning to the topic. “I'll definitely be coming to see the animals. Do you know what you're having, or is it a surprise?” she asked. She wondered if Chloe was planning on visiting her booth, but she didn't want to ask outright in case it sounded a bit needy, or in case Chloe thought her idea was a bit lame. She wasn't sure the information booths were going to be the ones that appealed most to the bouncy girl.

I'm sure it'll be great! by Chloe

Chloe touched her hair and smiled. “Thank you. My mom did it.” Chloe informed her roommate. “I’m not very good at it, but I know how to do it. My mom told me if I want to keep my hair long, I have to take care of it better. So, she’s been teaching me styles.” Chloe knew her mother had always wanted a girl and had been blessed with Harper. But over the years since Chloe was a little girl, Kiva had always taken the time to make her look pretty and do girly things with her that her father just didn’t know how to do. “I can show you how, but it might not look as good.” Honesty was the best policy.

Her blue eyes trained onto the magazine as Ji-Eun (she still sometimes had trouble saying the name, but she always corrected herself after the mistake was made) produced it. The magazine was gibberish to Chloe. She had no idea what the words on it, or the Korean symbols meant, but she could see the pictures just fine. “Ooooooh.” Chloe chimed when her roommate explained what she had been doing. Chloe knew that Ji-Eun enjoyed dancing. Chloe enjoyed it too, but she was not very good at it. She was too clumsy. Chloe enjoyed a lot of things but she was rarely ever good at them because of this and because of her lack in concentration. Her parents had worried about her ability in class since she had a hard time with tutors, but so far (and with the help of her siblings) she had been able to keep up. “You’re a good dancer, I’m sure you’ll be able to do it real easy.” Chloe said supportively. “I like the way they dance.” She commented as she watched the picture move.

Chloe jumped, clapped, and cheered quickly when Ji-Eun said she was going to come see the animals that she and her siblings were going to have at the fair. “No, it’s not a surprise. We’ll have some regular old animals there for people to pet like goats and donkeys. My mom said we can have a play center with puffskeins and pygmy puffs.” Chloe said, trying to remember everything that was said. “And probably kneazles and crups since they’re pretty awesome and fun to pet. Basically non-threatening creatures. She said she’ll try to get a couple of winged horses too, but she made no promises.”

Chloe sat at the edge of Ji-Eun’s bed. “What’ll you have at your booth?” Chloe asked her. “Unless yours is a surprise and I just have to wait and see.”

Thank you by Ji-Eun Park

“That would be great,” she smiled, when Chloe offered to teach her the hairstyle. She had been a little disappointed when she'd said that her mother had done it (it was also a little funny thinking of the headmistress spending her day plaiting the hair of one of the students, even if the one in question was her daughter. Sweet though), in case Chloe didn't know how. “That's ok,” she assured her, when she said it might be messy, “Most hairstyles take a bit of practise. So long as I know how to do it, it's just a case of practising until I can do it neatly.” She had a lot of practise at styling her hair in general, which meant that she tended to pick up new things quite quickly, although she refrained from saying so, in case it sounded boastful.

“Oh, thank you,” she said, trying not to show her surprise as Chloe complimented her dancing. She supposed she was in dance club, which might imply a modicum of skill, and she suspected that she jigged a little whilst she did things like brushing her teeth or her hair, but she wasn't really prone to bursting into full on routines in their bedroom. But it was still a nice thing for Chloe to say, and she was glad that her room mate liked the style too. “It's fun, isn't it?” she nodded, in reference to the sections of the dance that the pictures continued to work through on a loop.

She nodded enthusiastically as Chloe listed the creatures that would feature in her booth, even letting out a little squeal and a clap at the mention of the Puffskeins and Pygmy Puffs. Her jaw dropped at the mention of winged horses.

“Wow... That'd be something!” she exclaimed. “But even without them, it sounds fantastic. I can't wait to pet the Pygmy Puffs. Be sure to count them carefully,” she teased, “I really would have liked one, or even a kitten but my mum felt having my own owl was much more practical, especially with them being so far away,” she explained.

“No, it's not a secret,” she smiled, as Chloe asked about her booth, taking that as an indication that her room mate was planning to visit it. “Um, well I thought I would get some traditional outfits for people to dress up in and they could have a picture taken,” she was a bit worried that this was similar to the Head Boy's booth and hoped he wouldn't mind. She thought they were different enough that it wouldn't matter, and everyone loved having pictures to remember things by. “And that I would write people's names for them in the Korean alphabet. Or, as near as possible... Some people's names will probably work better than others.” She wondered whether to tell Chloe about the dancing.

“There might be other things that I didn't put on the form but which I could easily just add myself without needing things prepared for me, like maybe some snacks, or showing people some of the dances in the magazines,” she added, trying to sound offhand.
