Letter from dad by Clara Abernathy

Clara curled up on one of the overstuffed chairs in the Pecari dormitory to read the letter she just received from her dad. She was both excited about it and dreaded it slightly. She had written to him a week before telling him about the challenges and the ball. She wasn’t certain at the time if she should mention the fact that she had asked one of the boys from school to go with her. Would he be angry with her for it? She didn’t see why. Lucian was a Pureblood like herself and despite the fact that there had been a discussion over betrothing her, it hadn’t yet taken place as far as she knew. Her father was still waiting for word from Grandpa Abernathy as far as the subject went. She didn’t understand why out of all of the Pureblood traditions her family seemed to ignore, betrothal was one they didn’t. Every marriage throughout the family had been by betrothal minus a few exceptions. Her Aunt Charlotte had chosen Uncle Damon by herself, although it didn’t hurt that he was from a Pureblood family himself. It was just sad though that he had been the last of his line until her cousins Dimitri and Caspian were born. Sure Dimitri had a twin sister, but they still had two boys in the family.

Her Aunt Alora chose her own husband as well “unfortunately” she didn’t know at the time that he was a muggle. She didn’t find out until after their marriage. Her Aunt Simone was betrothed but her intendeds family pulled the betrothal when they found out about Alora’s husband. She had always wondered why her aunt Simone had never married and it wasn’t until the winter break that she discovered what had happened. She felt bad for Aunt Simone, but she still had time to find someone nice for herself. Clara wondered why she couldn’t find someone nice for herself when she was ready. She was still a little freaked by the whole thing. She couldn’t believe that she still hadn’t said anything to Brielle about it yet. She knew that her cousin would flip when she finally got around to telling her. Clara had decided to go ahead and tell her dad about her asking Lucian to the ball. She had always told her dad about everything else, so why shouldn’t she tell him about this. She figured he’d be okay with it on some level, but knowing her dad she also knew he’d tease her about it as well. Clara tore open the envelope and pulled out the letter from her father.

Clar-Bear,
I was happy to hear from you over this last week. The challenges sound like they were interesting to say the least. I’ll bet you learned a lot from the magical aspects of it. I was a little surprised to hear that you were considering asking a boy from the school to the end of term ball, but seeing how it is technically a school function I don’t see the harm in it. We will, however, not mention this to your grandfather. You and I both know how old fashioned he is about the who-asks-whom-for-dates thing. Your grandfather is a firm believer that any date should be initiated by the man and not the woman. “That’s just how its done” as he would say. I hope that you will feel comfortable enough to let me know what this boy you’re asking to the ball says. Should he accept your invitation, we will contact your Aunt Charlotte for some help on what to wear. I would have suggested Alora, but knowing you the way I do, you will not want to wear what’s traditionally acceptable. You will want something that will make you both stand out in some way. Who better to help with that endeavor than your Aunt Charlotte? Well I must cut this letter a bit short munchkin, but I hope to hear from you again soon. Good luck to you.
Love always, Daddy

Clara laughed softly at her dad’s light teasing. He really did know his eccentric little girl. He had been absolutely right about her probably wanting something different for herself and her date to wear for the ball. She had always disliked dressing how everyone else did. She shook her head slightly at the oddness that was her family tree. Heaven help the poor schmuck they found to marry her. He was going to have his hands full. At least he won’t be bored she thought to herself as she folded the letter back up and slipped it back into the envelope. She headed back upstairs to prepare for her impromptu picnic with Lucian. She just hoped that he said yes.
