Though it wasn't technically stipulated amongst their House traits, Jade had concluded that Pecari students were, by and large, a creative bunch. Her roommate Waverly was prone to baking, her sister, Josephine, specialized in jewelry-making, and Jane considered herself to be a budding artist. Today, however, she channelled her creative tendencies in a more incandescent direction. She had made her own indoor fireworks, and this was the day she'd chosen to test them out.
In the Pecari commons, Jade laid out three small balls, each the size of a Snitch. The outside was thin parchment that had been drenched and then dried into shape arpund its contents: eye of fire newt (lifted from the potions lab), saltpeter fertilizer (pilfered from the labyrinth), sawdust (pocketed during a CoMC class), alcohol disinfectant 9removed from the medic's tent after her last Quidditch game), and brine from the Dead Sea - a helpful component of some body scrub someone had clumsily left in the girls' bathrooms. She'd carefully stirred the mixture according to stumbled-upon instructions, and all that was left to do was to ignite the parchment containers.
"Here goes," Jade said, widegrin spread across her face as she aimed her wand at the first firework. "Incendio!" The ball set immediately alight, and Jade watched the parchment crumple and char, eagerly anticipating the fountain of violet sparks due to emit at any moment. Sure enogh, they came: a pretty purple pyramid of stars tumbling down onto the rug... oops. A split second before the rup erupted into flames, Jade realized her error. She cried out in surprise, already imaginingthe scenario in which the flames quickly spread, igniting her other two fireworks.
Being Prefect was something that the sixth-year Pecari had never asked for. She wasn’t even sure why the staff members had decided to bestow upon her such an honor. The blonde had never done something to set her apart from the rest of her peers. Nevertheless, she had been happy about being singled out like that. It made Sophia feel special. Something she had needed due to her internal turmoil. That was part of the past now, Sophia had managed to get her life back on track, and she was happy and excited about it.
The responsibility she had over her fellow Pecaris hadn’t interfered with her daily routine. She was sure the other members of her house could take care of themselves, with the exception of the firsties. They really needed someone to look after them from time to time, but Sophia wasn’t too worried about that. The only instance she would interfere in something would be if something dangerous or pretty exciting popped in her line of vision.
The sixth-year ran down the stairs to the common room to finish her homework that was due in the next day. She always did the same thing, leave everything until the last possible moment. The Prefect saw Jade Owen focused on something and left her be. The blonde went to the other side of the room and opened her book and began taking notes. Sophia yawned already bored with her homework. School work could be so dull.
Her mind began wandering towards unchartered territories when it abruptly came back when she heard the fire spell come from the other side of the room. Sophia blinked in surprise and watched the purple stars come out of somewhere. She clapped a second too late the rug erupted on fire. Jade cried out and the Prefect quickly got up from her seat and was besides Jade in a second.
“Aguamenti!”, the blonde said and pointed her wand at the flames. Thankfully, it worked, but the rug had big black holes on it. Sophia began laughing at the absurdity of what had happened. There was never a dull moment with her house mates.

Jade heard the spell uttered before she saw that a prefect had leapt into action. She was simultaneously glad that someone had saved her from burning down the commonroom, and crushed that it had been a prefect. Now they were sure to report her and then she'd get into trouble (not that she really minded getting into trouble all that much, but she'd learned there was only so far you could push people until they finally snapped and tried to make your life miserable in return). She was about to let her panic resume until she heard the prefect laugh. Jade looked at her and blinked a couple of times, blue eyes wide in astonishment.
"Thanks," she managed to say as the remnants of her first firework fizzled out into a pool of water. She didn't know whether she would need to turn on her 'innocent child' act, or even how she'd swing this particular scenario to work in her favor, so she tried to play it safe until she knew what she was dealing with. She imagined that Sophia wouldn't be too mad at her, considering she had laughed, but it was best to cover her bases just in case. "You totally saved the day," Jade gushed, quickly collecting up the remaining two fireworks before words like 'confiscated' started to be thrown around.
"It's so lucky you knew that spell," she added, supplementing her tone of adoration with relief, hoping she wasn't laying it on too thickly. "If I'd tried anything like that I would have just made everything worse," Jade laughed at her own uselessness, wondering whether or not her scheme was having the desired effect of letting her off the hook. She chanced a look at the prefect to judge by the older girl's countenance how things were going.
Sophia stopped laughing for a few seconds to reply to Jade, “You are welcome. It was in my best interest to stop the fire to escalate into something more dangerous than a burnt rug.” The Prefect winked at Jade. She knew she was supposed to reprimand the younger girl for her reckless behavior, but she was rather amused by the firework display, even when it ended in an almost tragedy. The blonde had no idea why she had been named Prefect, especially because she had no authority bones in her body. When she was younger she had been like Jade, wanting to explore things and don’t have a care in the world.
Her green eyes subtly looked at the remaining fireworks and Jade’s quick reaction. The younger Pecari put them away safely. Sophia grinned at her and sat down in a nearby table. “How did you make them?” she was curious. Her facial expression was very friendly since she wanted to make Jade feel safe around her. Sophia was not going to report her or even confiscate the remaining fireworks. It had been a while since she had felt curious about something that could potentially end up in some broken rules.
The Prefect leaned on her palms. “I swear I won’t report you or anything. The holes in the carpet could have been caused by a lot of reason.” Sophia laughed again. She was excited to be part of something like this. She was seeing it as a project. Being creative was something Sophia had long shoved into the back of her mind due to recent internal turmoil, but it was time to revive it with a bang. And fireworks would definitely provide that grand bang she was looking for. She was about to graduate and it was time she regained her life’s path.
