Cap'n Jose Hernandez

November 04, 2011 12:12 PM
Despite having been Pecari's captain since his third year, one of the longest tenures of a Quidditch Captain since Anne Wright, Jose had not yet won a Quidditch Final. He'd made it to the final, early on, before Aladren went mad and forgot they were supposed to be nerdy bookworms, but not won.

This year, he hoped to change that.

Crotalus and Aladren had both lost their captains and most experienced chasers, so they weren't at the same threat level they had been last year. Pecari, on the other hand, hadn't lost anyone, and Jose was hoping to maybe replace his weakest player with someone . . . who could fly. Once he did that, he felt his team had a good chance. He was now the oldest Chaser on the House Teams (well, Andrew was a couple months older, but Teppenpaw wasn't really known for its ruthless Quidditch playing), and Demelza was one of the school's two largest beaters, so Pecari did have some excellent advantages going for it.

Before he could win anything, though, he was going to need to choose his team, so as the first step, he fastened a sheet of paper onto the mostly empty bulletin board. It was decorated with moving doodles of broom-flying stick people, and read:

PECARI QUIDDITCH
Team Sign-ups

Pecari Needs YOU! Sign up below to join the House Quidditch Team. Try-outs will be held on Sept 16 (Sat) at 10 am. Include your name, year, and desired position(s).

Please note that no positions are guaranteed so everyone has an equal chance of making the team. All players, new and returning, who wish to make the roster must try-out.

Sophie Jamison

November 05, 2011 5:10 PM
Ahh, Quidditch. It was one of the finest things in Sophie’s life, really. Flying through the air, fighting the weather, all for the sake of a game that united Houses through friendly competition? She was definitely all about that. Plus, it was a distraction, and Sophie was all about those, too.

She hated thinking. Thinking made her sad. If she started using her head too much, bad memories and ideas came to her. If the blonde wasn’t occupied, she might start thinking of the things she worked so hard to block out the rest of the time, like her mom and her brother. She tried so hard not to think about them, but they did come up.

Now she had more not to think about. Since she was back at Sonora, she didn’t have to worry about her dad. She knew she would--she always did--but this was different and just… worse. He wasn’t himself all summer, giving her whatever she wanted. Usually he at least attempted to control her. That was the dad Sophie knew, the dad she wanted.

That wasn’t the dad she had at the moment, though. She thought there had been a woman, a girlfriend or something. What else could make him act so weird? The off-the-wall occupied look on his face was that of a man in love, and she was scared of what that meant. She wanted him to be happy, but she needed to be happy too.

The fourth year resolved to making him proud this year, which would certainly happen if when Pecari won the Quidditch Cup. With a slight smile, she signed her name in the somewhat-curly handwriting Jose had seen for four years now. Sophie Jamison, fourth year, Keeper.

Jhonice Trevear

November 06, 2011 5:29 PM
Jhonice was ready for this! She had been practicing all summer! Well, most of the summer, a good part of the summer, well when she got some free time here and there. But she had practiced! She had known she hadn't been the star of the team last year, and she was going to fix that. Her main focus over her summer training had been to overcome the problem that had plagued her here at the school, wrangling cursed brooms. She tried to convince her parents to just get her a new, uncursed one, but they wouldn't go for it. Luckily she didn't have any problem finding cursed brooms over the summer to practice with. She didn't know there were so many of them out there. Granted, maybe that's why she didn't have any problem finding them, no one else wanted them.

She found Captain Jose's sign up sheet on the board. It was incredible just as it had been last year. The handwriting was excellent and the decorations were spectacular. On top of that, it specifically said that Captain Jose wanted her on the team! This would be great! She signed her name and made careful note of the try-out time. Not that it would be necessary. Captain Jose wanted her on the team!

Jhonice Trevear 2nd Year Not Keeper

She had paused a moment at the position before deciding. Keepers didn't move around much, how could she impressed Matriarch Pierce if she just sat up there the whole game? The other positions would get her out into the field.

Mellie Goodwin

November 07, 2011 6:49 PM
She hadn’t done the worst of anyone last year – she hadn’t come off her broom – but Mellie knew that she had not really been the best player Pecari had ever seen last year, and she’d thought for a moment about not signing up. It was fun, but she didn’t know if it was really the best thing for the House team, and she’d feel bad if they lost where they could have won or something, however unlikely it was that a Chaser was going to affect the outcome of a game.

Then, though, she had seen that Jhon had signed up again and had decided to go along after all. It was something to share with her roommate, anyway, and if people who were way better than her joined the team, then she’d just hang out on the bench and have fun clapping from there and going in if someone got hurt. It wasn’t like that was at all a rare thing when it came to Quidditch at Sonora, not with some of the people running around here who did. If there were not a few Beaters who eventually came from Sonora and into the National Quidditch whatever, then she would be very, very surprised, because a lot of them were seriously good at what they did.

She used her full name on the sign up list on a whim, even though, after the fact, she wasn’t sure if she’d ever used it before so Jose would know who Melanie was. Oh, well, it wasn’t a huge leap from Mellie to Melanie, especially with her last name right there, and she thought he’d at least recognize her from last year even if he didn’t make that leap.

Melanie Goodwin, 2nd!, Chaser.

Elijah Errant

Though his left arm was slung in a cast (and unfortunately it was his dominant arm) Elijah figured he would be able to hang onto the broom with his legs and thighs clamped tight against the wood, cradle his arm with against his chest and then just fly with his right arm stretched out. He was determined to do whatever it took to become Seeker for Pecari.

Trying out for Seeker (I will be awesome so pick me please!)

His scrawl was more than a little untidy, the quill held in his right hand, some ink spilling onto his thumb and forefinger. He was resolved to learn ambidexterity. He was unsure how long the cast would need to stay on. 'Stupid Hippo-freak.' If he didn't love her so much he would hate her. But as long as he got onto the team there was no fear of his love for his angry angry Hippogriff diminishing. Trying to perfect whistling different tunes, Elijah curved his lips and walked away, exiting the common room and beginning to explore the rest of the school.

Demelza Eagle

November 20, 2011 9:33 PM
Per usual, the now sixth year sat in the common room after the opening feast waiting for the Quidditch sign-up list to be posted. Although this was usual for her, the usually obnoxious and loud girl had reserved a bit over the summer. That wasn't to say she was quiet or, Merlin forsake it, shy, but she had at least toned down a bit. The 5'11" tall girl spent a great portion of her summer driving in her new yellow truck all around Delaware after getting her full license, her windows rolled down and the wind splashing in her face, clearing her thoughts. Mel liked to clear her mind from time to time. Sure, it made it empty, but she felt peaceful, and despite how crazy Mel was she did enjoy peace very much.

Braiding her long and straight, chocolate brown hair, she laid on the couch taking up all the room. She had quick conversations with the people passing by, being exceptionally friendly to the little firsties. As one of the oldest students in the school, she wanted them to like her and look up to her ; she wanted to be their hero! She also hoped that several of them would decide to try out for Quidditch and she could whip them into shape. After the year was over and Mel would finally reign as captain for one year, she had so much planned for the team, including free tuition for a summer camp for the people who would be on the team this year that her brother was planning to run for kids around their age. And that was only a small portion of what she had planned for the team. Next year she was going to make sure Pecari was going to come out victorious; her life depended on it!

She also kind of had to join some more leagues herself if she wanted to try out for the pros after graduating from Sonora. Her brother Jamie advised her to try out for the All-Eastern team, which she was planning on doing at the start of next summer. The All-Eastern team included people from all along the Northern East coast of the United States who played against other regional teams in the nation in a tournament. The point was, making the All-Eastern team would give her a much better chance at making any national team. The future was coming up way too fast, that was for sure.

Finally Jose came down and put the list up. Mel stopped to chat with him for a few minutes about how his summer was before going up to sign her name. She pulled out a self-inking quill from behind her ear and wrote down in her best, chicken scratch left-handed writing:

Boss Assistant Captain Demelza Eagle, Sixth Year, Beater

Jade Owen

November 21, 2011 7:45 AM
Team sports weren't really compatible with Jade's self-confident nature, but as there wasn't really another way of competing at Sonora (she was ignoring academic competition as an option; she'd never be able to match the Aladrens and, frankly, was not interested in attempting to do so) she guessed she may as well sign up for Quidditch. She hadn't done so originally, as she'd thought about what she really wanted to do with her time at school, and tried to spy out those others who'd signed up for the team. She also had attended a couple of flying lessons first, to re,ind herself how to be competent on a broom, and be sure that she wanted to spend at least an hour a week in that manner for practises.

Eventually, she had come to the conclusion that Quidditch would be okay. The juxtaposition of pain and victory made Quidditch an exciting game to watch, and this thrill was what drew Jade to the position of Seeker in particular. In addition, it was the least team-dependent role available, and really she couldn't be relying on other people not to screw things up. So it was that only a few days before the advertised try-outs, Jade added her name to the list:

Jade Owen, first year, Seeker.

She didn't add 'or Chaser' or any other such non-distinction. For one she wasn't interested in any other position. For two, she wasn't a fan of pointless indecision.

Now all that remained was to see how well she fared in try-outs... and then to see how her roomates reacted to the news if she was successful in getting a place on the pecari team. She knew first years didn't often get spots, but sometimes it did happen - Theresa's cousin was the Aladren Seeker in his first year, and he'd won all his games so far. Jade would very much like to beat him at his own game. Firstly because he was a Carey, and being better than them was always good for a giggle. Secondly because if people stayed at the top too long they could get arrogant and complacent; she was doing him a favour, really.

Amira Thornton

November 24, 2011 1:31 PM
The red-headed second year was excited to come back to school at Sonora despite her stressful summer. School was like a vacation to the twelve year old. As the third child of fifteen she had quite a hard time getting attention when she needed it. The firey Pecari knew, however, how to get it. She only had to do something stupid and she’d have it in a jiffy.

Well, over the summer she had begged and pleaded for attention, but nobody had the time for her. Between shuffling two of the triplets from one doctor to another and Aislynn’s high fever for much of the summer, the family was very busy. Amira, on the other hand, partway through the summer, decided how she was going to get what she wanted.

Three weeks before she was supposed to go back to school, she climbed out the window of the bedroom that she, Addi and Arista shared. She climbed up to the roof, her broom in hand, mounted it and flew directly upwards. She flew higher and higher, faster and faster. The adrenaline pumped her body up into a tizzy as her altitude changed. “Right.” she said to the nothing but clouds around her. “Now I’ll show everyone how well I can dive!” Pointing her broomstick downwards, she lost altitude faster than she ever had before. At first she thought it was awesome, but she started feeling sick partway down. Her ears popped and she felt like the lunch she’d eaten would no longer be inside of her.

And then, she didn’t feel anything.

When she woke up, she opened her eyes but everything was blurry. “What happened?” she’d croaked out. The voice she heard belonged to Aubrielle and she felt her head be wiped by a towel.

“You fell a long way Mir…” she said softly. “You could have died! How could you?” Then Aubrielle fell silent, though Amira still felt her head be wiped. Looking up at Aubrielle, Mir sighed. Then she saw the towel was half white and half red.

Finally it dawned on her. “I’m bleeding… Aren’t I?” she asked, feeling all of her blood that wasn’t coming out, draining away.

Another voice chimed in. This one she knew automatically through the lisp. It was Analea. “Yeth, you are…” she said in a small, meek voice. “You sthcared uth…”

Amira felt damp drops fall onto her hand. She realized some were tears, but the rest were red blood drops. “Oh my god…” Amira uttered before she blacked out again.

When she’d woken up later on that night the whole family was around her and it felt as if they’d been sitting vigil over her. She knew by the looks on their faces they had been. Behind her family was white walls and she knew that she wasn’t at home. She must have been taken to the hospital…? With a small sigh, she turned her head to look at each of her family members. Even the triplets were there. When she got to her mother, they shared a moment and through tearstained eyes from the pair Amira realized that there would soon be another Thornton child…

She didn’t tell any of the others though.

Her head hurt so bad that she thought it would explode and brains would fall out all over the floor. “Ouch…” she remembered saying as she felt the pressure on her head which showed her that someone was still trying to stop the bleeding. “Hasn’t it stopped?” she had asked, vowing to herself never to be so stupid again.

Except maybe Quidditch… she thought as her mind sped up to its normally hyped up tones. Golden snitches flew around her and she caught one right after another into the night.

Odd dreams had followed her little incident, most of them had been surrounding Quidditch or flying which even thought she’d hurt herself, she still was going out for the team again. She wasn’t going to let it stop her from the win. Arista didn’t let her tendonitis stop her, so why would Amira let this stop her?

The cut on her head healed eventually, but still the bump and bruises remained as a tribute to her stupidity when she returned to Sonora. A few weeks had gone by since her return and although her head still hurt, it was once again time for signups. A sign was up as she came into the Pecari Common Room one day after class and she signed up at once.

Her handwriting wasn’t back to its normal scrawl yet, so it was a little messy, but still readable.

Amira Thornton, 2nd year, Seeker she wrote and went upstairs to her room to lay down to try to ease her current headache.
