A few hours after Coach Pierce left the Pecari Common room, Jose was back in the center of it, looking up from the textbook he wasn't reading and the essay he wasn't writing anytime anyone entered the room. He was watching anxiously for one particular person, afraid he'd miss her, or that someone else might have already spilled the beans about what he was about to ask.
At his worse moments, he was afraid she'd say no.
And then he saw her. "Mel!" He called, jumping up from his seat and hurrying over to her side. "Demelza!" he called again, too hopped up on adrenaline to care whether or not he already had her attention.
He grinned at her, his brown eyes alight and excited as he bounced on his toes and took her hands in his own. "I got something to ask you," he told her in almost breathless anticipation. To hike it up a little more, he paused for a long moment, holding his breath and biting his lower lip to keep himself from blurting it out before the moment was right.
And then the moment was right and he let it out: "Do you want to be my assistant Quidditch captain next year?"
It never once occurred to him that most of the girls in the school were half-expecting a guy might ask them an entirely different question this close to the upcoming ball.

'Cause this is the 'Price is Right!'
by Demelza Eagle
Demelza cheerfully skipped down to the common room after diner in the Cascade hall. She wasn't cheerful for any reason. She supposed it might have just been in her nature to be happy, but she didn't have any reason to be happy. In fact, it was quite the opposite. Demelza was pretty upset that the school year was ending and without such a... bang. The school year in itself was absolutely wonderful (beside losing to Aladren, which Demelza had to admit she wasn't very happy about) and she wanted to end it with a big bang! Although, she never really got to it. She hoped that her cousin Paul wouldn't come home with better news: she was determined to show him that Sonora was way better than his school. She couldn't believe that her little sister choose to go to the same school as Paul either! Demelza knew that Kat really didn't want to go to Sonora with her, but Kat was so... independent, that Demelza was surprised that she choose Paul's school.
But, hey, Demelza was just so crazy, what with her ADD that she denied she had, that things like this easily drifted from her mind. She wiped out things like that during her weekly meditation. So, cheerfulness was acceptable! She continued to skip through the gardens, her sanctuary in the school, touching all the flowers as she passed. Then, she said the password out laud to get into the Pecari common room. She was extremely started when someone shouted her name out loud.
Her head turned so quickly toward the voice that she cracked her neck. She ignored the crack and then moved swiftly through couches to go over to Jose, her Quidditch teammate. "Yes, Jose?" She asked, in a completely fake and over done puzzled voice. She raised her eyebrow in real questioning when he said he had something to ask her. Oh gosh. she hoped that it had nothing to do with the upcoming ball. Demelza was so just planning to pull that off going with no one. She raised her hand made a gesture that clearly said "Ok... keep going!"
Then , Demelza could have jumped and shout for joy her answer to his totally unpredicted question.
"YES!" The first year squealed. Her dark brown eyes bulged out, and she ran a hand through her chocolate brown hair. "Wow, I mean... haha, sorry that was like really ecstatic haha," she laughed nerously, super glad at what had just happened. Oh boy, Jamie was going to be jealous for sure! He wasn't an assistant until his fifth year at his school! And Paul... oh boy, she was positive he was jealous just when she told him she made the team! Imagine how jealous he would when she told him that she was the assistant captain. She couldn't wait to boast about it to her family!
"So... like yeah it's gonna be so cool! Wait... when were you appointed Captain??" Demelza had to get to the reality of it all; as far as she knew, she didn't know any appointings were made!

Jose grinned and if she had jumped up and down, like she so obviously was on the verge of doing, he would have been right there with her. His own captaincy was still so fresh he felt he hadn't yet touched down from that himself. Her excitement fed his and he laughed and grinned and didn't mind in the least that he was standing right in front of her when she squealed.
"Like, two hours ago," he answered her question about the timing of his own appointment, and though it was physically impossible for his smile to get any bigger, he started bouncing on his feet, and admitted without any shame, "You think your reaction was big?" And it was, the ringing in his ears confirmed that, but he still felt his outdid hers. "I started singing show tunes and dancing on the furniture."
But then, he'd been named the actual Quidditch Captain and he was younger than Saul had been when he'd been made Assistant. He felt the brief descent into to madness had been fully justified, even if he was pretty sure Coach Pierce might be regretting her decision and thinking he needed a psychological evaluation (of course, she was an Eastern Pierce and he was California Pierce, so maybe she'd figured that went without saying; the Eastern branches had never had much good to say about his branch) - but in any case, she hadn't recanted her offer, so all was good.
Managing to calm himself down a little bit, he kept smiling - he was pretty sure he wouldn't be able to stop for at least a few weeks - and added, "Next year's gonna be awesome. Luckily, my cousin was Captain last year, so I kinda know what I'm doing and I'll be able to badger him with tons of questions this summer. I guess your big thing to do is to help me run try-outs and practices." He was a little fuzzy on exactly what it was an assistant did and he hadn't thought to ask the Coach earlier today. He'd add it to the growing list of questions he planned to turn on Saul, though.
Terrific! My brother is going to be jealous! >:D

Demelza was surprised by how long ago he was told. So much was happening in Pecari house so fast! Her ridiculous grin was rapidly growing as Jose continued onward.
"Niicceee!" She exclaimed when he told her his reaction to the news. She thought it was so amusing, that she then proceeded to give him a high-five. "I would so have done that, if I wasn't totally positive that'd I'd probably fall and hurt myself!" She joked. She was, for the first time, finally starting to feel excited for the term to end: when that happened, she would get to go home and tell Jamie about her new assistant captaincy! Than, next term would start, and she would be the assistant captain!
Then, for the first time, Demelza appreciated the fact that she was the one with the beater's bat: it was the captain and their assistant that were usually aimed at. It was a good thing that Jose had gotten over his fear of heights this year, because from being a beater for a year now, she knew that lots of bluders were going to be sent his way. And as she thought of that, she remembered that she no longer was going to have Caedence to help her... she would be top beater! It was what she always had wanted, but would she be up to it? She sure would need to practice with her brother lots this summer: it helped having a brother who was a national Quidditch player!
She grinned as Jose as he explained that he would badger his cousin for questions about what he was supposed to do as captain. That was really good! At least he would know what he was doing!
"Yeah, I guess that's what I do! And I'm going to ask my brother Jamie what to do and for tips and stuff like that. He's a national Quidditch beater, so he should know what he's doing," Demelza told him, glad that they both had people to ask advice for. Hopefully by next term the Pecari team (which would probably be the youngest and least experienced team next term...) would be the best, being under such great captaincy (ok, Demelza was getting a bit fool of herself).
"And I promise I will try my best to make sure you don't get squished by a bludger next term like Elly," she added, with a wink. She hoped that didn't scare him.
