Happy Birthday, Elly! by An Owl

It had been harder than usual to come by the present Saul wanted to buy for Elly's birthday than it normally would have been. With the wagon trip, it was sometimes days between when he saw towns, and he tried to only allow himself to go into ones that that had existed during the original Trail. And since Elly had been with him for most of the summer - a fact which he would not change under any circumstances regardless of how difficult it made Birthday Shopping - he'd only had about two weeks to find, wrap, locate an owl post, and send the owl over to Sonora with the gift.

He didn't really have a lot of money just now, either. Part of the reason the family had let him go on this trip at all was because they figured it would be good for him to have some practical budgeting experience. But what he'd wanted to get Elly was reasonably cheap.

So today, when the public post owl came into Pecari's Common Room, on the very day of Elly Eriksson's birth, it carried with it a letter and small package.

The letter was on the long side, and risked a classification of a short story instead of a letter. Its correct spelling and rambling nature of it proved he had forgone his attempt to avoid magic entirely and used a dictation quill to write it. It told Elly in exacting detail about every rock he had passed since she had returned to Austria, and left out only his attempts to find her present because he was assuming she hadn't opened that yet. His next letter would rectify the lapse.

Inside the package wrapped in brown paper (the most period wrapping paper he could find at the post office), were three tin stars. Each star had a word written on it a font generally reserved for items from the Old West, particularly on tin stars that usually read Sheriff. These, however, read Captain, Prefect, and Deputy Captain.

Alongside them was another note, which read in Saul less legible hand, "I no you all redy have bages, but I thout you mite like thees better. The deputy one is for Irene so you can mach. Happy birthday! -Saul"

Happy Birthday to me! by Elly Eriksson

Elly had been having a pretty good birthday. She hadn't organised a party, because although it was her eighteenth birthday (marking her as an adult in the Muggle world, as well as the wizarding), she'd organised her fair share of parties in the past few years, and the start of seventh year was proving to be somewhat busy. With organising Quidditch try-outs and start of year assignments feeling very difficult after a relaxing summer of no academia, Elly was pleased to just spend the day doing as she pleased. So after treating herself to pancakes with syrup for breakfast, she headed back to the commons for her textbooks for the day to find a package delivered by an owl which must have just missed the morning post.

She had a free period first thing, and Elly decided that reading her letter from Saul was far more important than doing her potions assignment. Already grinning before she'd read the first line, delighted to have contact from her friend (having spent over a month solid with Saul it was just weird not having him around anymore), Elly settled herself into a comfortable chair and took time to read the essay over. She laughed aloud in a couple of places, as she imagined Saul continuing on his crossing over the country. It was nice that Saul kept in touch, and that he hadn't gone mad being on his own.

Finally, Elly finished reading the letter, and turned to the parcel instead. The contents delighted her - she pinned the prefect badge on her robes immediately, just next to her real prfect badge (which was just below her Head Girl badge) and underneath her genuine Quidditch Captain badge. The Captain badge from Saul would be reserved for games only, because Elly was starting to feel as if someone brought a magnet into the room she'd be powerless to stop herself from flying towards it. Nevertheless, it was her best birthday present yet, and Elly promised herself that as soon as her potions homework was complete she would settle down and write a reply to Saul.
