Settling the First Years [cont. from Cascade Hall] by Professor Baer

Caleb led his little flock of students out of Cascade Hall, away from the school proper and to one of the entrances of the Labyrinth Gardens. He stopped in front of a completely ordinary looking garden hedge beside a suit of armor, one of many that littered the maze.

“No stragglers? Lovely. This is the entrance to the Pecari Common Room. Tell the password to the suit of armor and he’ll let you in. I’m sure you’ll make lots of friends in the other houses, but do not tell them where this entrance is or what the password is to get inside. That’s only for Pecaris to know. Any changes to the password will be posted on the notice board in the common room. Let’s go in.”

Caleb told the password—“Ice mice.”—to the suit of armor and the hedge moved aside revealing the entrance to Pecari Common Room. There were couches, chairs and tables scattered comfortably for the students’ use. Caleb motioned for the students to enter and he followed them inside.

“Welcome to the Pecari Common Room. This will be your home for the next seven years and the people around you will be your roommates and classmates so you’ll have plenty of time to get to know them. I hope you’ll bear with me as I explain a few things. Over here,” he pointed toward a bulletin board on the wall, “is the notice board where you’ll find the changed passwords, flyers for our school events and things of that nature. There is the staircase leading to your dormitories. There are two halls, the left one going to the boys’ rooms and the right one to the girls’ rooms. Boys are not allowed in the girls’ rooms and vice versa and if you want to try, there are spells in place that will prevent you from entering the hallway. In fact, they’ll drop you right down here.”

“Curfew is at ten o’clock and you’re to be back in this Common Room by then. If you need anything, there are three Prefects you can ask who would be happy to assist you. Saul Pierce, Elly Eriksson and Irene Liddowe. And my office is through that door so you can come to me as well. Are there any questions?”
