Things had been going so well. No, that was a lie, they’d been going terribly ever sense the game started. Something about Pecari in the finals spelt doom from start to finish. She’d never been in a game where more bludgers had found their mark against her beloved team and where the other team had remained relatively unscathed. It was infuriating to watch, and to be a part of. I vote that we all get bats next time she thought rebelliously just as the game came to a startling finish.
The Seeker’s run had caught her attention and for a moment Kitty lost all thought of the Quaffle as she sat frozen in the air watching two points: one brown, one blue, each streaking towards a single goal, a small point of light, barely seen in the drizzling rain. At first it looked like Blue would win, especially when one of their bludgers finally reached its proper target, and the brown streak did an impressive summersault that by all rights should have taken it out of the race. But somehow, some way the brown Seeker landed on her feet and continued the run with out loosing more than a moments time. Kitty couldn’t help but be reluctantly impressed with the display of skill, but it didn’t matter. That fraction of a second when she’d gone tumbling had given Arnold the breathing room needed to pull ahead. Reaching, reaching, reaching….and then out of the rain soaked sky yet another bludger slammed into the outstretched arm just moments before the Snitch could be captured. Now it was the Blue that went spinning, and the Snitch…the Snitch was caught by enemy Brown.
Anger mingled with bitter disappointment as the game was called: Pecari wins 150 to 10, pitiful, absolutely pitiful. As the players descended it was easy enough to slip off the field and away, the throbbing in her ribs was nothing compared to the lump in her throat as she fought furious tears and she refused to cry in front of her team.
The halls were empty and the sharp tapping of her sneakers on the hard floor almost seemed to chase her as she fled, hot tears already mingling with rain that had left her hair and robes uncomfortably wet. Finally she reached the hall she wanted and flung open the door. Soft summer light met her eyes and for a moment she almost slammed it shut again before changing her mind. With a sigh, Kitty stepped into the water room, a calm lake with a long dock greeted her teary eyes and quietly she shut the door behind her. The soaked though robe was discarded on the brilliant green grass, and as she walked a trail of clothes followed, soaked shoes, soggy socks, a wet sweater, until she was left in a pale blue t-shirt and her damp jeans.
For a time Kitty walked along the edge of the water grabbing rocks big and small and tucking them in the pouch she made out of the bottom of her t-shirt. Once she had enough, Kitty set her sandy feet on the weather warn planks of the dock. The wood was warm from the sunlight and brought a ghost of a smile to her lips as she padded silently down its length to the end. Kneeling down, Kitty let the rocks fall into a pile at her feet before she grabbed one and threw it as hard as she could out at the water. Pain flashed in her side, but it was ignored as rock after rock met the same fate, and tears painted her cheeks with salt water.
Andri had been watching the game with terror in her eyes. Sure, she’d seen a few games already, but this game for some reason had sparked terror in the eleven year old’s eyes. At the start she’d been so excited to go to watch the finals. But as the game went on and on and Brown versus Blue seemed to become dangerous. I’m glad Amira isn’t playing in this, or she’d be- Andri thought, stopped only by seeing a bludger crash into one of her houses’ Blue clad players. She realized it was Kitty that the ball had hit and Andri’s heart sank. She looked hurt, but determined to keep playing.
The first year took her eyes off her sister on the bench now and took to watching Kitty’s every move until the Seekers both dove. Andri split her gaze from watching Amira to watching the Seekers and as a bludger hit Carey’s arm, Jade, Pecari’s reserve Seeker caught the Snitch!
Pecari had won.
Andri turned her head fast towards Amira who looked madder than she’d ever seen her before. Andri looked to Arista and Ris nodded back to her as Andri saw Kitty run off the Pitch. “You two get Mira. I’ve gotta catch Kitty!” she said as she ran off from the stands, following Kitty as closely as she’d dared to follow the older girl through the Pitch and up to the Halls towards the MARS rooms. Kitty stepped into the Water Room, shutting the door behind her. Andri took a deep breath, waited a moment and followed in after her.
The fourth Thornton to enter school there at Sonora was just as wet as her fellow Aladren, but as Kitty’s sneakers tapped sharply across the floors, Andri’s kinda had a sucking sound and her socks were wet and uncomfortably sloshy. When she walked into the room, she entered as quietly as she could watching the trail of clothes to see which way Kitty had gone.
Andri didn’t come out right away, instead she watched her housemate walk along the edge of the water picking up rocks and putting them in her shirt’s pouch. Kitty padded down the planks of the dock and dropped the rocks at her feet. Andri walked towards her as quietly as she could and watched as Kitty threw one of the rocks out at the water.
Walking slower and slower, Andri made her way closer to Kitty watching as she threw rock after rock into the water. “Hey, mind if I join you?” Andri said quietly. “It looks like you’re hurting, maybe I can throw a few for you with the same needed thoughts?” she continued as she looked into the girl’s teary face.

Her side was really starting to ache when a voice broke her angry attempts at winging the stones all the way to the other side of the lake. Kitty let out a little “EEEP!” of surprise and nearly toppled into the water before she regained her balance and furiously began scrubbing at the tears on her face. It was embarrassing to be caught crying like a little kid.
Kitty’s emotions had always been tied to her tear ducts, and it was the same for her mom. There was nothing worse in the world than to be angry, and have her eyes start leaking, who took a crying girl seriously? And then she would get even madder because she was crying, it was a vicious circle really, and one that she couldn’t escape. Kitty was pants when it came to concealing her emotions. It was simply impossible for her to hide anything.
“Sure.” Kitty said, still moping from the recent loss. Once Andria joined her at the edge of the dock, Kitty scooted over before sitting down with her short legs dangling over the water. That brought another fierce scowl to her face as she stretched her legs out as far as they would go and her toes barley managed to touch the surface of the water.
Andri watched as Kitty let out a noise which shocked even the first year. The red head jumped backwards herself almost headfirst into the dock so she didn’t notice that Kitty had almost fallen into the water. She caught herself on a pole and fixed her composure quickly as she noticed the older girl wiping at tears from her face. She could tell the older Aladren was uncomfortable crying in front of her, but Andri had seen much worse tears and wanted to be sure to tell her that. Addison was constantly in a state like this, so it was normal to the eleven year old.
Kitty said she could join her and sat down on the dock. Kitty dangled her legs over the edge and Andri joined her once she scooted over.
“Hey, its okay to cry, you know that, right?” Andri said softly to her. “Momma always says that to us.” she added. “It helps us feel better about whatever it was that was bothering us.” The fourth Thornton sibling watched her older housemate, worry threading her brow. Now I see why Addi’s always so worried about everyone… She sees this, or feels this from everyone. No wonder she can’t hold it in anymore… Andri thought as she looked down at her wet and untied sneakers hanging over the edge. She pulled her legs up one at a time to tie them again and winced at the wet laces as she tied them tightly before looking back up again at Kitty. “Really. Everyone cries, it’s a natural release of negative energy.” she said with a fast nod of her head to show her belief in that.
A small smile emerged on her face as she held out her hand to the older girl. “In case we haven’t been formally introduced, I’m Andrina Thornton, but you can call me Andri. That’s what my friends call me and I want to be your friend.”
Andri had looked up to the older Aladren almost like she looked up to her older sisters who played Quidditch. She’d always wanted to play, but had her mind stuck this year on learning sign and braille, but maybe next year would prove otherwise? Maybe they could practice together? Maybe they could be teammates next year? It’s worth a shot to try, right? she thought as she waited for Kitty to reply.
“Yeah, I know. But it’s just so silly.” Kitty said as she brushed fresh tears off her red cheeks. Games were lost, but she still didn’t think that it was right for them to have lost this one. They shouldn’t have lost the final to Pecari and it was like Aladren had snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory. “It was just dumb luck that Jade got the snitch.” Kitty said sullenly. If that new beater hadn’t got that lucky hit in during the Seeker’s run than Aladren would have won.
“Hi Andri. I’m Katrina but you can call me Kitty, everyone does.” Her voice was still a bit watery from crying but the storm of tears was nearly over. The muggleborn was by nature a friendly girl and she was happy that Andri wanted to be her friend. “Yeah, let’s be friends.” Kitty declared, suddenly happier now that she wasn’t moping in her misery at the loss by herself.
“Everyone has to lose sometimes, but next year we’ll totally get the cup back! Pecari won’t get lucky next time.” Kitty stated as she grabbed another rock and let it plop with a splash into the water. “So are you ready for summer?”
"But its not silly..." Andri said softly, more to herself than to the older girl. The first year watched Kitty intently as she brushed the tears from her cheeks. "Dumb luck, yeah..." she repeated once Kitty had said it. Andri knew that she'd be hearing about that catch for the whole rest of the year and summer now from Amira but the red head wanted nothing more to do with it. It was over, it happened and there is nothing that would change that.
"Well then, Kitty and Andri it is." Andri said with a finality in her tone, though still gentle at the same time. "Friends forever!" Andri added, pulling off one of the friendship bracelets off her wrist and handing it to Kitty. They were both a pretty blue color, Brielle had sent them to her the week before for her to share with her best friend there. But Andri didn't really have a best friend yet, and she thought that perhaps Kitty needed it more. Kitty spoke and Andri nodded.
"Right. But we won't lose next year. Maybe I can play too?" she added with a shrug as Kitty grabbed another rock. Andri turned away, but back again when she heard the splash in the water.
“So are you ready for summer?”
Andri shrugged again. "I dunno. Part of me is because I get to see my little sisters, but I really don't think that spending the next few months with Amira will be so happy..." she said with a sigh. No, I KNOW they won’t be too happy… Andri thought. “What about you?” she asked.
After Andri agreed that the catch was nothing more than dumb luck she changed the subject. Her tone returned to an upbeat and Kitty couldn’t help but grin. “Yeah! Friends forever.” She agreed. Laurie was perhaps her best male friend in the whole school. But Kitty wasn’t terribly close to any of the other girls. It would be great to have a best girl friend. Once the declaration of friends forever was given, Audri handed Kitty a pretty blue bracelet. “Thank you!” Kitty said happily, the tears drying on her cheeks forgotten in her excitement as she put the new friendship bracelet on.
“Sure, I don’t see why not. Then maybe I won’t be the token girl anymore.” Kitty said with a laugh. It didn’t bother her too much that some of the boys and a lot of the other people in other houses thought of her as Aladren’s Token Girl. All that mattered was she proved that she was more than just a good luck charm. That she could play just as well as any of the boys. It would be nice to have another girl on the team though.
“Yup, it’s going to be great. We’re going camping at Lake Tahoe and we’ll roast marshmallows and it’ll be over the Fourth of July week and we’ll have fireworks that we get to shoot off ourselves!” Kitty exclaimed with a happy bounce. It was a trip they took every year and Kitty simply adored camping, especially because it was legal to shoot off fire works at the campsite.
Andri was glad that Kitty's happiness seemed to come back when the subject of their conversation changed. When Kitty grinned, Andri couldn't help but giggle at her new friend. Since she started there at Sonora she'd looked up to Aladren Team's only girl, Kitty, but hadn't had any idea how best to talk to her, make friends with her. But it seemed that the game had done the work for her. "Forever!" Andri said, eyes lighting up. She loved it when she (or anyone else) smiled. Smiles had a way of lighting up the room better than any lightbulb or candle and Andri loved that most of all.
Kitty's tears were drying on her cheeks, and Andri hoped she was forgetting them altogether. A girl as awesome as Kitty was doesn't deserve to be upset, Andri knew that. "Welcome!" she said in response to Kitty's thanks as she watched the older girl put on the bracelet.
"I'd like that, I really would. I'd like to spend time with you, play on the team." Andri said as Kitty laughed again. "Even if I was just a reserve, I think that would be awesomesauce!"
Then the conversation changed again to what the pair would be doing over the summer. Andri thought about how awful hers would probably be, but tried to ignore the thoughts as she asked Kitty what she'd be doing. Andri listened, starting to get excited for her friend's summer plans. "Wow! That does sound awesome! I wish I could come!" she said. "It sounds much better than my summer will be..." she added, sighing, glancing down at her own blue bracelet.
