Let's get this shambles on the road [tag Lizzie] by Ash Craven

Ash was still slightly confused as to what the big fuss was about, and why some guys were allotting hours to get ready. He could understand why girls would. Girls-who-weren't-Sorrel (who didn't really count as one) were just like that. He had taken a shower, not because he thought he really needed one, but because it was one of those things where you were meant to make sure you were totally clean and freshly scrubbed for and then got changed. He mashed some kind of product into his hair, wiped his hands automatically on his trousers, swore loudly and repeatedly, wrestled them off, punched Stephen in the arm for laughing at him and performed a few quick cleaning charms (which, luckily, were simple, as it wasn’t an area he'd particularly bothered to focus on) and, satisfied that no marks could be seen, put them back on again. He thought of robes as way too like dresses anyway, so ones that were called dress robes were seriously pushing it, and he made his way down to the commons in a black tux, with a black shirt and a grey tie, with one of those pointy patterns on it that characterises the clothing and jewellery opted for by skater types, done in black. He wasn't sure what had been sent for Sorrel, in case she changed her mind, only that she didn't seem to have, judging by her behaviour all day.

"Hey," he greeted Lizzie, when she came down the stairs. Once he was close enough not to have to shout, he told her "Nice dress," leaning into kiss her, oblivious to any "rules" about avoiding smudging her lipstick, he added softly in her ear, "it'll look better on my bedroom floor." Pulling back he passed her a small gold cardboard box, with the eloquent invitation to open it of "This is for you or something." The thing had arrived wrapped up in his tux. It had borne the post-it "It's a corsage. Give it to Lizzie". For Ash's part, he had managed to remember to remove this and not dent the box around too much during the time it had lived in his sock drawer. He had looked in to see what it was, and discovered it was some weird flower-ribbon thing that looked like it didn't really have a point. He had decided not to remove it from its box, as that way lay tangling the ribbons, so it was still just as nice as when it had been bought. It was plain black, as Angela Craven had had no idea what colour Lizzie would be wearing. She doubted very much she would be able to find out as, even in the event that Lizzie wasn't going for the female trait of keeping the dress details a secret, there was no way Ash would recall a specific enough colour. Scarlet, maroon, burgundy, carmine, crimson and vermilion would all, if taken in in any way, come under the banner of 'red'. With the more unusual terms like 'vermilion' and 'carmine' that required some actual paint-chart or fashion vocabulary, it was doubtful that they would be categorised as anything other than 'I dunno'. So, black it was. That went with everything.

Before Ash could ask if Lizzie was ready to go, there was one thing that he couldn't help but be bugged by. Sorrel may have been a right- well, words one shouldn't call one's sister – about the ball, but she was still his twin. Ash didn't know whether her behaviour was because she genuinely hated the idea, or because she was just bitter that she hadn't been asked. He wasn't sure Sorrel knew. Either way, she'd tried to make herself feel better by making him feel worse, and had been harping on at him for weeks about the fact he was going, saying it was sappy and stupid, and she couldn't believe he could be bothered, along with choicer insults and language. Today, all communication bar the trail of door-slamming noises through the school and withering looks had ceased. But in spite of this, he couldn't take the thought of her spending the night sulking around feeling rejected. Especially not by him. He knew he couldn't really do much about it, but he couldn't go without asking…

"Is she up there?" nodding his head up the girls' stairs and assuming it would be obvious who he meant. "Or did she go out already?"

OOC – for your reference when answering, Sorrel is not currently up there. She left with her Quidditch stuff at the first sign of people getting ready. Obviously it's up to you whether Lizzie witnessed this or simply knows that she isn't there currently.

All right then! by Lizzie

The process of getting oneself made up for a formal occasion is often the most arduous task of the event. Lizzie was no stranger to the realm of balls and parties, which made the whole rigmarole of getting dressed a simple and fairly painless process. However, Lizzie enjoyed taking her time getting ready. There was no reason for her to rush, she reasoned with herself, she knew Ash wouldn't do anything as stupid as leave without her. Besides, it was a truth universally acknowledged that a single Sonoran boy in possession of a good girlfriend must wait for her- or something along those lines.

She had bought her dress over the Christmas vacation in a Parisian boutique. The slinky matte black dress hugged Lizzie's figure just tight enough to allow a little shifting room. The dress was straight necked with spaghetti straps and came down to a ruffled edge filled with shiny black seed beads a few inches above her knees. Paired with her favorite four inch black sling-back Manolos, the look was perfect. Lizzie's ebony hair was simply twisted in the back, held together with the extra-hold "hairspray" sticking spell. Two princess-cut diamond earrings sparkled expensively on her ears. She dashed a final stroke of gloss over her lips and took a two second look in the mirror. Parfaite.

After descending the stairs to the commons as quickly as possible with retaining her air of grace, Lizzie caught Ash's eye. He cleaned up pretty good, she had to admit. The clean-cut tux look was working for Ash. "Hey there," Lizzie kissed him back and replied in her own dropped tone, "don't get too ahead of yourself there, cowboy." She grinned, and took out the corsage. "Oh," she looked from the black-ribboned flower to him, "Thank you."

"Sorrel?" she repeated, trying to remember the last time she'd seen her roommate, "She left oh, hours earlier. Took her quidditch bag and left. Is everything okay between y'all?"

Lizzie wasn't sure what to make of the question. Obviously the two were fighting about something if he didn't know that his twin had left the commons hours prior. It was odd, but Lizzie didn't want to push the issue any further. She had a feeling that her and Ash's relationship sometimes got in the way of their twinship, and that made her feel bad. Lizzie of all people understood someone else coming between siblings was really rough on the relationship.

"Are you ready to go?" she finally asked with a not-so-innocent smile, "The earlier we go out, the sooner we can come back..."
