Caedence scowled at the common rooms, almost deserted as students took advantage of the good spring weather to go outside. She, however, stayed shut up inside. She watched each person come and go. Some small first year (was she ever that short?) and a tall lanky fifth year (would she look that awkward when she was their age?) sat in a corner playing exploding snap. A pretty blonde older girl, she guessed to be at least a sixth year, was checking out her image in a compact mirror.
Her mind drifted, as it often did these days, to her mother. She had been getting progressively worse. Even after Elly convinced her it would all be okay, it wasn’t. First they had her have several surgeries, but none of them helped. Now she’s in the hospice. Grace was the name of it, in Chicago, Illinois. It was run by witches and wizards. Her mother told her a hospice was where they made you feel good until it was your time. Caedence knew what she meant by that, but refused to admit it out loud.
She had written to her mother about the ball, telling her all about the plans of what was going on. She, stupidly, made the mistake of telling her mom she wasn’t going. She, in turn, received almost a six page report of every reason to go. All but the last one Caedence could argue with. The last reason was “Do it for me”. She couldn’t say no. Not when her mom was so sick.
But who to go with? It wasn’t like there was an abundance of guys at Sonora. Single ones, at least. Brett and Irene, Echo and Elly, Saul and Briony, the list went on and on. Maybe she could ask that stupid redhead kid that wouldn’t leave her alone?
And then what to wear? She did have that one green and black dress. Perhaps that one? She didn’t feel like wearing her winter dress. Elly could do her hair and makeup. Caedence knew her best friend would like that. Especially after their summer. It was rather fun, messing with Elly’s hair and talking about guys. They should do it again soon. But, she wasn’t sure if they could. Not with her mother. But for now, they could act like it was summer again. And they’d have Meredith here too! It would be fun. Perhaps Danae would join in? Caedence was beginning to like the girl more and more after they made up after Christmas.
But she would probably go alone. And Elly wouldn’t like that. She knew Elly. The girl would insist she found a date to go with. But there were so few guys to choose from!
As if in answer to her thoughts, she saw a particular bouncy second year boy enter the commons. Jae! Of course! If she offered him chocolate or something, the kid was sure to say yes.
Standing up, she stalked over to him, grabbing him by the back of his shirt. Turning him around to face her, she said, “You, you’re my date to the ball. Any questions?” After a short pause she added,"Please?" \n
