Matt! You've got to help me! by Saul Pierce

The talk of the semester was the coming ball and who was going with who. People were pairing off like crazy and there were only a couple of months left. As far as Saul knew, the two most beautiful girls in the school hadn't been asked yet, but that was unlikely to remain true for much longer. He had to figure out who to ask before both of them found other dates.

Echo was useless. He was totally biased toward Briony because he didn't even know Pepper. He hadn't asked, but he suspected Elly to be in the same boat. This left only one person who could help him in his desperate hour of need.

"Matt!" Saul wailed as he flung open the door to their room and threw himself onto his bed. He shifted his arm, which he had dramatically thrown over his eyes as he fell backwards onto the mattress, to make sure Matt was actually in the room. Good, he was. "Who do I take to the ball? Briony or Pepper?"

Matt didn't know either of them, but Saul was sure he'd talked about them both enough since they'd begun sharing a room that he'd know they were both gorgeous and they were both really cool people. Briony was a great friend who had taught him to ice skate and often made up stories with Saul and had an imagination that could keep up with him. Pepper was the the kindred spirit who also gave guided tours for new first years and was Saul's first crush. Because Matt knew the two equally badly, he was the only one of Saul's friends who could come up with an unbiased answer for Saul.

"Help me, Mateo Santoro, you're my only hope."

You want <i>my</i> help? by Matt

Since Saul had become a roommate, their room hadn't been the same. It was loud and far less stuffy than it had been when it was only Matt and Echo in the room. It was odd how worried Matt had originally been when Saul had first asked to join them because with him around, things had lifted.

Still though, Matt sometimes missed the quiet.

Matt glanced up from his homework when Saul loudly entered the room and cried out his name. Matt was used to Saul's theatrics, so he wasn't at all phased by his roommates antics. Still, he was curious to know why Saul seemed as though he was in need of help. He waited for Saul to finish his dramatic show and wasn't all that surprised that it was about Pepper and Briony.

He, at least, knew what the two of them looked like and though Matt wasn't into red-heads, knew that the two were nice to look at (not that he said it like that to Saul). But, other than that and what Saul told him, he knew nothing else about the girls. Matt set his quill down and looked thoughtfully at Saul while he pondered the question. Who should he take? It was a tough call. Matt knew Echo's take on it, but that didn't help much.

Briony was the girl Saul seemed to spent much of his time with in class or whatnot, but Pepper was the one who did a lot of the same things that Saul did. Like Quidditch. "Okay, I need more to go on." Matt said finally. Though Matt claimed to be only into looks, he had ultimately decided to ask Meredith because the two of them had gotten along well enough and Matt figured she was the one he'd have the best time with.

"You seem to have a lot of fun with Briony, or so that's what I've gathered from your stories. Pepper... what do you do with Pepper again? I know you two have a few things in common, but... I mean, what do you two do when you're together?"

Yes, I do by Saul Pierce

Saul blinked. What did he do with Pepper? "Um," he said. He'd actually spoken with her three times. Or was it just the twice? He couldn't remember, exactly. "Well, the one time we were doing a Divinations assignment. Um. I think we turned something in, anyway." He scratched his head. Mostly all he remembered about that time was how he hadn't been able to string two words together. And neither had Pepper.

"Well, we smiled at each other a lot. You know like in the shows, how when the two people who really like each other meet, and they go all insane and can't talk because they're turn into complete idiots? Well, that's how that one went. And we said hi in the halls a couple times. And um, this year we had our kids sit together during our tour groups, and we smiled at each other some more." It hadn't quite been as nerve-wracking the second time, but he didn't recall a lot of conversation going on.

"And well, on the Pitch, we're playing against each other, so we can't really do much but try to play our best and not suck." Saul took a deep breath and summarized, "See, Pepper's my besotted crush from afar, and Briony's the one who I laugh and joke with."

That's a new one. by Matt

Matt listened to what little Saul said. It didn't really make much sense to Matt, to want to hang out with someone he couldn't even talk to. It was one thing to have a lot in common to be attracted to someone, it was completely different to be standing there smiling at each other like idiots and expect to have a good time.

He didn't want to use that against Pepper though because Saul really seemed to like her even if he couldn't talk to her. And, who know, maybe someday Matt could understand such a predicament later (though he really really hoped that would never be the case). He had to shake his head though when Saul mentioned 'shows'. His mother never let them go to the theater, afraid they'd make a commotion.

"Okay, so let me get this straight...you've never actually had a conversation with her?" Matt asked Saul. "Well, I personally don't think I would have all that good of a time standing there smiling awkwardly to the girl I like for hours at the dance. Doesn't seem all that fun for me. So, if you want to actually have fun and dance and stuff, I would go for Briony. But, if you don't mind smiling and look stupid and do nothing else, then ask Pepper."

He wasn't exactly sure if that helped Saul out at all, but at least he was giving him his honest opinion on the situation. Go with the girl he knows he'll have fun with due to past experiences or go with the girl he can't even talk to and end up probably having a very awkward and weird time.
