Seeking a certain Blonde by Matt Santoro

OOC: I know you're probably busy IRL, so take your time with replying. BIC:

Matt had just ended his insane conversation with the first year, Kasey. He was still angry at his brother for abandoning him in his hour of need. Seriously, where did that girl come from? And what in the world was she thinking by asking-no-telling him that he was going to the dance with her? Who did things like that?

And then. AND THEN! The girl flips out at him because he said no thanks and runs away! What in the world was wrong with girls these days? Matt was still frazzled by the encounter as he stormed into the common room in search for the familiar blonde he had been anticipating to ask to the Ball.

After the run-in with Kasey and knowing Josh already had a date, Matt was starting to think he should have asked Meredith a long while ago. Maybe if he had, the conversation with Kasey wouldn't have been so weird. Matt could have simply said he was already going with someone. Or, if Meredith had said no, he could have humored the first year and told her yes. Though, he probably still would have said no and gone off to ask Amber if she wanted to go with him.

So, after climbing through the hedge and storming into the commonroom, Matt took a deep breath and called out to the blonde that he had been looking for. "Hey, Meredith, do you want to go to the Ball with me?"

And you know what they say about us blondes. by Meredith Lail

OOC: Thanks. Luckily our break is coming up so I should have plenty of time to post for a while. Hurray!

BIC: Up in her room, Meredith sat on the edge of her bed staring with a small frown at the pet cage that contained both her puffskein Dot and her mouse Pence. Pence was the reason for the frown. She had been trying to coax the little animal from his cage, but he simply wouldn’t budge. This happened every time a kneezle or cat was in seeing distance or even of smelling distance to the mouse. He went into a panic and curled up in the far corner of the cage.

“If you would just come out, I could take you away from them.” She stroked the brown fur with her index finger gently to lull him into a somewhat false sense of security for what felt like the millionth time. He was calm as long as she didn’t attempt to wrap a hand around him. She waited patiently for a few minutes, not an easy feat for her and because of such, her feet started tapping silently in the air. There were other things she ought to be doing rather than spending her time trying to pull a frightened mouse from his cage, but homework was so far from her mind. Not that anything useful was occupying her thoughts, it just wasn’t homework.

Finally she made a quick motion and scooped the mouse up in her palm. On queue, Pence squealed and fought for freedom, but Mere grinned as she pulled her hand back out of the cage.

“Gotcha, you big baby.”

Mere hopped off her bed and left the third year girls’ room, letting Pence crawl from one hand to the other. As she walked down the hall she heard someone call her name. Actually she heard Matt call her name and a little more than that. The Ball. Now that it was brought up, even though Mere knew about the Ball, she realized she hadn’t thought about being asked or asking at all. It wasn’t that she thought she wouldn’t be asked or accepted, she just hadn’t thought about it. Period. It hadn’t mattered to her.

Mere reached the top of the stairs and found Matt down in the common room looking out of sorts. Had it taken that much effort to ask? Maybe he had been running to find her. She didn’t know how big of a deal other people were making over this silly Ball. All Mere knew was that she was being forced back into that dress, which would be a pain. She moved down a few steps and sat with a smile.

“Sure.” She answered. “Uh, Matt? Why do you look so…” She paused, wondering what the right word was. “Shook up?”

No, please tell me, what do they say? by Matt

Matt looked at Meredith in a semi-pleading way until she accepted his proposal and he immediately relaxed. It wasn't so much that he had been worried she would say no, because he wasn't, but rather, if she had said no...he'd have to run around and find Amber without ever running into that crazy first year.

As if on que, Meredith asked him why he was so out of it. If she only knew how insane his interaction with the first year had been. Where was Josh when he needed someone to back him up?

"Okay, so I totally wasn't going to ask you to the dance until, like, the day of the dance cos it's really not a big deal and stuff and didn't think you'd mind, but get this!" Matt started, moving to grab her arms to show her just how intense the situation really was, but saw the rodent in her hands and decided it was best to allow her to maintain control of it. Instead, he took to pacing.

"So, I'm eating luch with Jose and we're sitting there talking and stuff and I'm totally making fun of him over Danae cos they're a couple even if they won't admit it when this first year comes out of nowhere-" Matt was talking rather fast and in his adrenaline rushed voice, his accent grew heavy. He had yet to be able to control that part of his speech yet.

"She just walks right up and tells me I'm going to the dance with her. I don't even know her!" Matt exclaimed, clearly upset at such an action. He was bold, but that was nuts. "I told her that I was planning on asking someone else and that she was better off asking someone in her own year. She gets upset. So, I tell her that I'll save her a dance cos I don't want to have to deal with her crying. And Jose leaves me completely alone with this girl, right? The idiota! So, the girl just freaks out on me! Just yells and storms off! And, and on top of all this, she calls me 'hot stuff', right in front of Jose!" Matt shook his head and flung himself down on an empty couch.

"So, now I'm like, crap! I have to deal with girls like her now? What did I do? I mean, really? What did I do? And then she got me thinking that everyone's gone and asked everyone else already, so I should ask you now before anything else happens." Matt took a deep breath when he finished. "Anyway, that's why I'm all shook up and that's why I needed to ask you and thank you for saying that you'll go with me."

Actually, it's an extensive list. by Meredith

Meredith lightly bit her bottom lip to hold back any laughter at Matt’s predicament since he really seemed stressed by it. She did laugh a little when he mentioned his brother and Danae. Mere was the last person to ask about any kind of couple business at school. She was perfectly clueless. A lot of people’s ideas were weird. Elly and Echo? What had that been about besides having the same initials maybe? As far as she was concerned it was just something funny to tease her friends over.

Mere nodded along with the speech and let her eyes follow Matt as he began to pace back and forth. She slowly slid down the stairs until she reached the bottom step so she could hear him better. Whoever this first year was, she must have really hit a nerve because Mere had to listen closely to catch the rest of the story as his words were spoken faster and his accent got heavier. She wondered if it had been a Pecari. She sure sounded bold enough, but she thought Matt might’ve mentioned her name if it was. That is, if the first year felt like she needed to even introduce herself before telling Matt he was taking her to the Ball. Meredith wished she could have seen what happened herself.

When Matt finally seemed to have worn himself out from pacing and ranting, Mere followed him and balanced herself cross-legged on the arm of the couch. She continued to listen while petting Pence with her thumbs. Well she was right in thinking he looked shook up. That was some story. Of course a dull moment was hard to find at Sonora Academy.

“No problem. Thanks for asking me.” She said with an encouraging look after Matt finished. “You know what it is though?” She tried to sound as she could manage. “You just shouldn’t have been so darn handsome. Hot stuff, huh?” Mere couldn’t help letting a joking giggle slip.

“I don’t think this Ball is that big a deal either. Definitely not as big a deal as this first year is making it. I mean, if it’s anything like what I had to go to on Christmas Eve, well, I doubt it would be since most of the people here aren’t a bunch of stuffy old witches and wizards. Still, don’t let it make you crazy. I wouldn’t have minded being asked later on, or at all actually. I really hadn’t thought about it too much. But not everyone’s been asked yet. Elly and Echo weren’t asked yet. I’m sure a lot of other people weren’t either.”

Meredith shook her head as the idea of how crazy someone could get over something this silly passed through her mind again. It was such a Mama thing to do.

“Honestly, it’s just a dance, right? Like a party except you're overdressed.”

Are there any saying on Latin Boys? by Matt

Matt knew that the whole thing was utterly ridiculous and he'll be laughing about it later, but for now, he wanted nothing more than to rant and rant and rant some more about what a horrible experience it all was for him. Matt wasn't one to get embarrassed quickly, but this girl had completely messed with him and when he tried to be nice about it, had completely thrown a fit and run off.

All girls weren't like that, right?

He glanced up at Meredith expecting her to explain why the girl acting in such a way, but her response was to only tease him for it. "Hardy har har, Meredith." Matt said, though he did smile. It was pretty funny. "I can't help being such a good-looking guy. Who knew that it'd have the ladies all over me for it." Matt joked. Still, he thought it rather peculiar that the girl insisted Matt was better looking than his brother. They had the same face!

Matt was curious to know what her Christmas Eve had been like considering she made it sound as though it had been a completely horrible experience. Matt's family always had parties. They were fun and everyone danced. It was the thing to do. It was something they could all love and a way of expression for them. Even Sofia and her stiff look on life would be dancing and laughing along with the rest of them.

Weren't all parties like that? Or maybe it was only his culture. Or, beyond that, only his family. He could recall a few stories his parents and various relatives were tell of dreadfully boring. They had wanted to spare their children of such agony and so, they had made everything fun. Matt was only just beginning to understand just how different his lifestyle was from everyone else.

He remained quiet, however, when she mentioned Elly and Echo. He knew that, apparently, Echo had a thing for Elly (Matt was still trying to get used to the idea that Echo wasn't into boys) and so, had knowledge that Echo was trying to work up the nerve to ask Elly. Matt didn't think he would though. And Saul still seemed to be having trouble discovering which girl to ask out. That was always entertaining to watch.

Aside from everyone else Matt was associated with, both his brothers and his sister had dates. But they were all in relationships, so that was obvious. He didn't really pay attention to anyone else, but figured that people must have started asking others or will in the near future.

"Yeah, dances are fun though. Or, at least, they've always been for me. But, we're dancers. My family, I mean. We love to dance. I've never been to a bad party or ball before." Matt commented, watching the animal in Meredith's hands while he spoke. "What were you doing on Christmas Eve?"

Oh if only you knew. *grin* by Meredith

"Hardy har har, Meredith."

Meredith grinned at Matt’s retort. Only as he continued on jokingly did it click in the back of her mind that Matt and his brother looked basically exactly alike. She doubted she could tell the difference if they were walking together between classes or something. Well, maybe a little. She had been in the same house and classes with him for three years. The first year hadn’t though. Weird girl.

Mere wondered as Matt spoke about how dances were fun for him and his family. She tried to imagine what his family was like from this new information and what she knew from talking to him or seeing his siblings. They sure sounded like fun. Like her family, except they weren’t really dancers. She didn’t know if there was one thing they all loved to do. Everyone had their own thing. Except maybe Quidditch, but Faye had moments where she just couldn't watch it.

Matt said he’d never been to a bad party. Mere hadn’t either until Christmas. Then again, she had never been to a big party like that before then either. Only birthday parties and such. But the upcoming Ball was definitely going to be better. Her friends would be there to make it fun and if she so chose, no one would throw out her bread animals before she finished making them.

“Well, the ministry holds this big Christmas party or ‘gala’,” she made finger quotations, “but it doesn’t sound like your parties. There wasn’t a lot of dancing. Some, but mostly a lot of speeches from Daddy’s boss and tons of pictures. Don’t know why Daddy took all of us this year. Us being me and my three older brothers. He usually just goes with Mama.” She shrugged and paused for a beat as she thought about the evening. “I looked like a toy doll, but Mama couldn’t have been happier. She couldn’t wait for a chance to dress me up.” She laughed. She noticed Matt looking at Pence crawling in her hands. She held her hands out towards him. “You wanna hold him?”

I really wish I did know. by Matt

She had gone to a party at the Ministry? So that would mean that all the big 'Heads' were probably there. If that were the case, no wonder she didn't have any fun. Matt's family went to family parties or parties in Mexico with friends or even in Spain. Everyone was loud, everyone was happy, everyone was dancing. There were no boring speeches and pictures were well wanting for remembering a good time.

Matt didn't know it any other way. And now that he was thinking about it, he really hoped that this ball wasn't going to be like the type of 'gala' Meredith was talking about. Matt would be bored to tears and would want to skip out. Which might not be all that nice to Meredith considering he had just asked her to it.

Though, he really didn't think the Headmaster would make with a lot of speeches and if there were loads of pictures, it would be from the students taking them for keepsakes. And even if it were a little bit awkward at the start, he was certain by the end of the night everyone would have been worn out from a good time.

Matt took the rat from her hands when Meredith offered it to him, "I wouldn't have thought you would have a rodent for a pet." Matt commented while he watched the rat in his hands. "You have a bigger family than I thought." Matt told her. In truth, he hadn't thought much of her family in general. He simply assumed, like Echo and Elly, that Meredith was an only child. "I have eight siblings. Josh is only younger than me by three and a half minutes. Everyone else is older."

He was amused by the fact that Meredith didn't like wearing dresses. His sisters, no matter how boyish they were (Julia took the cake on that one), they still liked to dress up on occassion. "I'm sure you looked cute in the dress. Were there other kids at the 'gala'?" Matt asked her.
