Could it be the start of something? by What's this?

On the noticeboard, looking entirely unobtrusive except for the decorative holly pattern bordering it, was a small notice. It read:

It's the place to be
The problem is to find it
Cascade is the start

Miserable midterm by Elly Eriksson

Midterm wasn’t supposed to be miserable. It was supposed to be excellent fun. Yet as Elly sat alone in the commons, sulking, she felt anything but cheerful. Her friends were home for the holidays, and the gardens were closed, so even playing in the snow, or visiting her much-loved swing was out of the question. She hadn’t even had the enthusiasm to execute her pre-midterm prank. As Elly slouched in an armchair by the fire, in one hand she clutched a letter that she’d received only three days ago. She’d read it several times, but not yet replied. Still, she almost knew the short missive by heart.

Dear Elly
I’m afraid I have some bad news. Your grandmother is ill – don’t worry, it’s nothing serious, she’s just had a virus and is taking a long while to recover. Her neighbours and the doctors are all taking good care of her so please don’t be concerned. However, this does mean that you won’t be able to spend the holidays with her. I’m afraid you don’t have much choice but to spend your midterm break at school. Will you ever forgive me? I’ll do my best to make it up to you, I promise. I know it’s not much, but I’ll buy you your own broom for Christmas – any one, you take your pick. Write back Elly, let me know you don’t hate me.

All my love, and best wishes for a Merry Christmas,
Daddy xxx

It wasn’t his fault. Elly didn’t hate him, and she knew he had to work. She didn’t hate her grandmother, either – it wasn’t her fault that she got ill, and Elly was very sorry to miss out on seeing her this Christmas. She couldn’t help but feel a bit of irritation towards her mother, though. She’d already been to Austria at the end of the summer – why did she have to go again over Christmas? Why couldn’t she go visit her family while Elly was at school? It was like she was purposefully trying to avoid seeing her own daughter. Elly frowned. She didn’t especially enjoy spending time with her mother, but it would be preferable to be at home than to spend the holiday at school, feeling like she had nowhere else to go.

Sighing, Elly cast her eyes around the commons for the hundredth time, desperately thinking of something fun to do. Her mind, however, was blank. Her eyes were drawn once again to the strange message that had recently appeared on the notice board. With what felt like great effort, Elly hauled herself up from her seat and dragged her feet sullenly over to read the missive over again. It was as elusive as ever, but in her boredom, Elly felt the inclination to head down to the Hall and find out what all this nonsense was. She shoved the srumpled letter back into the pocket of her jeans and pulled her trainers back on before exiting the commons.
