[Professor Connell's Office] After the Feast by Saul Pierce

"Hey, Michael," Saul called out cheerfully after hanging out in the Cascade Hall until the First Years were called away and sticking around the commons until the new additions to the house dispersed. "Summer was awesome, how was -" Saul stopped. He looked around. "Michael?"

He was alone in the room. No suitcases were there but his own. No models sat out on the furniture. Only his stuff. Fear gripped Saul's insides like it never had before. He ran out into the hallway, but Michael wasn't there either. Neither was his stuff. "Michael?!" Saul called again, starting to panic.

Obviously, he roommate didn't answer. Leaving the door to his room open, Saul tore down the stair and started banging on Professor Connell's office door. "Professor! Professor! Where's Michael?!" Sure, there had been more boys in his year when he started and they had slowly disappeared, too, but Michael was the last one left. If Michael was gone . . . Saul was alone. He couldn't do alone. He'd never been alone for more than five minutes in his entire life.

The idea of being in that room all night without somebody else breathing and preferably snoring in there with him terrified the willies out of him.

Can't I have 24 hours? by Professor Connell

Generally, it took a few days for the panicked screaming to start at Sonora. However, apparently this year was to serve as the exception to the rule, as within an hour or two of Marian settling the first years in, someone, from the sound of it, raced down the stairs and started banging on her door.

She wasn’t all that surprised to find Saul Pierce there when she opened it. Not that he was a trouble-maker, or anything like that. He was, however, as rambunctious as many of his fellow Pecaris, and, once she’d deciphered what he had been saying, was the person most likely to be worried about a Michael’s absence.

“Come in, Mr. Pierce,” she said immediately, and motioned him toward one of the chairs opposite her desk. “I assume you mean Michael Tallow? I’m sorry to have to tell you that he is not, to the best of my knowledge, going to be a student at this school this year.” She didn’t offer a reason; mainly because she wasn’t herself sure of the particulars of the case, but also it seemed a bit unethical to discuss a student’s personal life with another student. However, she wasn’t sure that was what Saul was after. “Is there some sort of problem?” she asked tentatively.

No, this is an emergency by Saul

Gone. Saul's already panicked looking eyes grew wider. Michael was gone. Just like Eduard. There one year, gone the next with no word and no warning. He fidgeted on the seat in Professor Connell's office, unable to let this one go like he had Eduard's disappearance. There'd still been Michael after Eduard had left.

"Yes. There is a problem. It's too empty. I can't stay there." Saul shook his head, denying the possibility. "Don't make me stay there by myself. Can I move in with Echo and Matt? Or Connor? Change houses and stay with one of the Geoffs?"

Well, as far as problems went, this was a fairly simple one to solve. Well, for problems that involved screaming and semi-hysterics, Marian amended. She didn’t quite understand why Saul looked so petrified, but everyone had their own phobias.

So she managed to bite back her giggle at his final plea, for appearance’s sake, though she couldn’t imagine he’d been serious about it. “No, Saul, unfortunately, I can’t allow you to switch houses. You were put in Pecari for a reason, after all, and allowing people to change like that, good though I’m sure your reason is, would set a precedence that could only lead to disaster. However, I see no problem with allowing you to share a room with one of the other years, if you can’t stand having your own.

“Either the fifth years or the third years should prove fine. Just be sure to ask both of the people already in it first, and have them come talk to me. Once whom you’re rooming with is sorted out, then we’ll get the prairie elves to rearrange things to get you a bed and the like.”
