[First year Boys' Dorm] Settling in
by Matt Santoro
It had been the first couple days already since the start of classes and Matt still hadn't found the time to unpack. Well, unpack properly. Most of his stuff was thrown about his area of the room as he had shuffled through his trunk each morning or night to get whatever it was that he needed. Actually, the mess reminded him of home and he was not so enthused to pick it up.
However, his mother's last words before they had hopped onto the carriages was to keep their rooms neat or else they would get Howlers. Matt wasn't about to get a howler in front of the entire school. He liked attention, but not in that way. Besides, he didn't want his roommates to get angry at him for being messy. Josh as a roommate was a different story, Matt's mess was Josh's mess and vice versa. He didn't think his roommates would think the same way though.
He rummaged through his things, tossing them onto his bed until his trunk was empty. That done, he took what clothes were clean (or as good as clean) and stuffed them into his drawers. Whatever was left on the bed, Matt threw back into his trunk. The discarded items around the floor, Matt tossed into a pile for the Prairie elves to take when they did their rounds. That done, Matt turned to notice that he wasn't alone in the room. Surprise registered on his face first because he hadn't heard anyone come in and then a sly smile crossed his features, "Mama always I should keep my room clean." Matt joked.\n\n

Echo had finally found the library, and he had spent just enough time in there to discover that there was no internet connection. How do you do research without the internet? He'd asked around and there were also, apparently, no computers in the building. Something about electricity getting screwed up by magic.
He took the stairs up to the boys dorm two at a time -- the railing was really helpful for that -- and slipped into his dorm to write to his mom and then re-read his transfiguration homework. He'd already read it twice, but he hoped he'd missed something important because he still didn't get the match to a needle thing. He'd even tried saying the spell twice before he left class. The fact that nothing had exploded was comforting.
He noticed Matt cleaning up his area before he reached his bed, but didn't want to interrupt the much needed cleaning going on over there. He unloaded his text books onto his pillow and pulled out a sheet of parchment and a ballpoint. The quills didn't work. He didn't know how the magic-kids used them.
"Mom," he wrote, "I started classes. So far, I've had Care of Magical Creatures, and Transfiguration. Teachers are good. COMC is outside (no classroom!) and transfiguration is more school-like."
He looked up at Matt and watched him clean for a while. Writing letters home was weird. He didn't know what to say because most stuff was was too different than home to mention.
Matt finally noticed him. He smiled, "Mama always I should keep my room clean."
"Yeah, mine too. I've been trying like crazy," Echo grinned, his own section was spotless. It was a temporary state. "I'm like afraid to leave stuff around."
He stuck his partial letter home back in his blank paper folder. The only thing he really knew about Matt was that he had a twin and they were all in classes together. So he said, "So, did you get that match thing to work?"\n\n
OOC: So so so very sorry for delaying this reply. I had to write my post out for transfig and it just took forever for me to do that. I'm so sorry! BIC:
Matt's grin widened. From the few days that they had been here, Matt hadn't seen a thing out of place over at Echo's end. Though the other boy seemed strange to Matt (most people who weren't a Santoro by blood or by association were strange to Matt considering they were the only people they had ever really associated with), he just couldn't see Echo's side of the room being messy. Then again, Matt couldn't really see his side being clean, and yet...here it was, clean.
"I'm not worried about leaving my stuff around. I'm worried about Mama not being fooled and sending me a Howler!" Matt said, giving an obviously fake shudder at the word 'Howler' to show how much he didn't want one. Though...eventually...he was sure to receive them sooner or later.
"Yeah! I mean, not completely and all, but it's close enough. Josh is a bit in a huff cos his didn't work out to well for him, but then, he's always been better at thinking things and I've been best at doing them." Matt, talking rather quickly. "I'm really looking forward to Charms and Potions though. You can learn all sorts of cool things in those classes." Matt said, rubbing his hands together in a conspiracy sort of way. "How about you?"\n\n
"Definitely potions," Echo agreed. He was looking forward to most of his classes, actually, except possibly for the actually being in class parts of classes. So far, though, they seemed pretty hands on without all the boring lecture parts.
Truth be known, they were a little too short on lecture, to the point where they set them loose on a thing to do and Echo generally had no idea what was going on. Maybe it was the lack of magic background. Echo was learning to get around it though, by ignoring certain things until they became really necessary. Take that howler bit Matt had just gone on about, for example. Echo had no idea what a howler was. But he hadn't worried about it. If was important, it would come up again. Better to keep to what he knew.
"I heard potions is like chemistry. It's probably going to be hard, right?" he said it like it was a good thing. Not that all hard things were good though. Take transfiguration for example. That just made his brain hurt. "What kind of things can you do with it?"\n\n
