Saul the Guide - where art thou? by Elly Eriksson

Saul Pierce was fast becoming an invaluable contact. So far he had led Elly to practically every lesson, not to mention saving her from certain disorientation. It was for this reason that Elly was seeking Saul the Guide for her next activity.

Ever since she had arrived at Sonora, Elly had planned on building a swing in the grounds. At her grandmother’s house there was a spectacular swing that Elly and her dad had built years ago from an old tyre and several lengths of strong rope. It had since become common practise for Elly to build swings wherever she was likely to be spending time. Swinging was her current most successful form of escape. Unfortunately for Elly, her tiny London back garden did not facilitate any means whatsoever for swing building. If it did, she might have spent less time in her room avoiding her mother and more time in the garden. As it was, she’d had to venture out whenever she felt that swinging was a necessity i.e. whenever her mother and her had an argument i.e. a lot.

Elly had mentioned her swing-building plans to Meredith and Echo at the Opening feast. She had suggested that they venture out into the gardens together after the first day of lessons. Well, that hadn’t happened, but enough time had passed that now Elly was itching to explore or construct or do something that would divert her energy, otherwise she was likely to cause mischief through her boredom. Therefore, she had devised a very simple plan. It involved finding Saul the Guide, and persuading him to help them find some suitable swing-building materials – namely rope. Phase two was relocating Meredith and Echo, who, yet again, Elly had managed to lose sight of on her journey back to the common room. Phase three was to enter the gardens, find a good spot for a swing, and build said swing. Easy-peasy.

In her dormitory, Elly had hurriedly pulled on her usual faded denim cut-offs and an old purple t-shirt. The hair elastic that had been restraining her mad orange curls at Sonora had finally decided that it had served its time and snapped. In her unsuccessful search to find a replacement elastic, Elly’s eyes had fallen upon her spare shoelaces. This was the reason that as Elly re-entered the Pecari common room, her hair was tied back with a black shoelace. Elly surveyed the room with her hands on her waist, one hip jutted out further than the other. It was time to implement phase one of her very simple plan: find Saul the Guide. After a quick scan round the room, Elly couldn’t see Saul, so she began to look for him the only way she knew how.

“HAS ANYONE SEEN SAUL PIERCE?” she bellowed. Several students turned to glare at her, but Elly stood defiantly, waiting for an answer.

*Shrugs* by Ginger Silverstein

Ginger had been sitting in one of the chairs reading one of her Johny The Homicidal Maniac comics. She had been there since after lunch laughing every now and then. It was a really funny comic book series. She wasn't having a bad day at that moment, she was actually doing okay. She hoped that Adam was alright, but part of her doubted it. There was just some sort of aura about him that said that he always had a reason to be miserable and Ginger couldn't find out what it was.

She also had a can of coke and a twinkie on the coffee table in front of her. She took a drink of her coke, and continued to read.

She placed some of her chin length blond hair behind her right ear. Her hair had dark blue streaks in it today to match her white shirt that had a Sheek from Zelda on it. Sheek was dressed in blue.

She jumped when she heard someone scream "HAS ANYONE SEEN SAUL PIERCE?” She knew that Saul being a personal guide for those firsties would turn into something. Now they seemed dependent on them. The girl didn't really intimidate her, it just sort of made her feel odd and slightly uncomfortable. She was so perky and uppity. Ginger felt a little uncomfortable around people of such traits, but she decided to cope with it and be very polite.

"Ugh no," she said with a nervous smile. "I haven't seen him, ugh anything I could do for you?" She wasn't Saul's closest friend or anything, but she got along with him well.

Saul Pierce

I suppose that would be me. by Saul Pierce

Saul had been up in his room, trying to remember whether he'd borrowed the potions textbook from Michael or Eduard, when he heard a shout from downstairs. Saul tossed the book on Michael's bed and hoped that if it was actually Eduard's, he'd blame its disappearance on Michael.

Then he ran downstairs, not really knowing what to expect. It had been a girl's voice, so he was pretty sure it wasn't because he was about to get accused of stealing. Well, not unless that can of soda someone had kindly left in the Commons for him to liberate had been hers. Ginger, maybe?

When he got there, Ginger was present, but he gathered from the way everyone was acting that it had been one of the firsties who'd shouted. The girl EE. Elly, Saul was pretty sure, because it was the boy who was Echo. He'd gotten that name down for sure during Potions. Now, Echo, he could understand shouting for him after what happened in there, but he was pretty sure he hadn't done anything to Elly.

Still, best take it like a man. "You bellowed?" he asked, leaning casually against the stair wall as he stood on the bottom step. He knew better than to show any sign of guilt. That just let people know they were right to suspect him, and this time he might even be innocent. He wondered which of his roommates had been talking.\n\n

Ah, there you are! by Elly

A girl with blonde hair streaked with dark blue turned to answer Elly’s shout. “I haven't seen him, ugh anything I could do for you?” she asked. The girl seemed nervous, but she did smile, so Elly smiled back. She’d seen the other girl in their lessons together, but had not yet spoken to her. Elly opened her mouth to reply, but someone speaking drew her attention.

“You bellowed?” Elly turned to see Saul, the very person whom she had been seeking, leaning against the wall at the bottom of the stairs up to the boys’ dormitories. She grinned at him.

“Saul the Guide!” she exclaimed cheerfully. “I wondered if you could help me with something. You seem to know Sonora pretty well, so I might as well ask you as anyone else. Do you know where I can get hold of some rope?” Elly asked him. She was aware that her request probably seemed quite unusual, but she would explain herself if necessary. It was then that it suddenly occurred to Elly that Saul might have been busy doing something important, and she had shouted for him just so she could build a swing. Mentally she slapped herself, and gave Saul and extra wide smile to make up for tearing him away from whatever it was he had been doing.

Here I be. by Saul

Oh, good, she wasn't blaming him for stealing her soda can or anything. But . . . rope? Whyever would she think he had any idea where to find rope? Sure, he knew his way around Sonora but how could that possibly jump to 'I know where the groundskeeper -' Oh. Right.

Because he was the groundskeeper's cousin. Duh.

Saul grinned, pleased with himself for this deductive reasoning. He could get her rope. He hadn't a clue why she wanted any, but she'd asked him for help and he was able to provide. "Absolutely," he agreed cheerfully. "That is, I know who to ask. C'mon," he jumped down off the bottom step of the stairwell and into the Commons proper, then made a bee-line for the exit. "Simon'll know where to find some. He's the groundskeeper. You'll like him. Or you'll hate him. One or the other. Maybe both. Simon's like that."

Then he was out of the Commons, and into the Gardens, presumably with the girl right behind him, though he didn't turn around to check. "SIMON!" he bellowed as soon as he was outside. "WHERE ARE YOU? SIMON!"

The tricky part wasn't going to be finding the rope. The tricky part was going to be finding Simon. The Gardens were huge and he could be anywhere in them.
