Marian Connell

Marian looked around at the assorted students gathered in the common room. She wasn't as nervous as she was last year at this time. She now had a year of teaching under her belt, and although some of it hadn't gone very well, she was sure she could managed better now.

She had decided, though, through the course of the last year, that she just couldn't be intimidating. She really wasn't capable of pulling it off, and at times it made her feel like a fool. So she could be lax, and attempt to manage her students better. She sometimes didn't think it was fair, that Manfred, who was a much better disciplinarian than her, got such a quiet lot, while she got who many considered to be the most rambuctious group in the school, but she would just do her best to manage them, and hope that the first years were a bit less rowdy.

She looked out at the students again, and than began her speech. "Hello, and welcome to the Pecari common room. My name is Marian Connell, and I am the potions teacher, and your head of house. Second years, feel free to tune me out. First years, this is where you should be if you're not in a class, at Cascade, the hospital wing, the Quidditch pitch, the Gardens, or at the Library, so get use to this area. You're going to be here for the next seven years.

"Now, the boys' dormitories are on that side," she gestured with her hand," while the girls' are on the other. Boys cannot get into the girls' rooms, while, usually, the girls can't get into the boys', although there have been times when that has not been the case. If you do try to go into an area where you shouldn't be, the stairs should simply reject you, and send you back down here.

"On the subject of common rooms, you must be back here by 10 o'clock every night. As for other rules, they really are common sense, mostly. Things like, no fighting, no cheating, no food fights," she shot a glance at where she saw the Craven twins and Stephen Baxster sitting. They're fight had been rather amusing, really, but the other staff members, most particularly Manfred Bulla, had not shared her views.

"Other than that, there is not really anything else to say. I hope you all saw how to get into the common room. The current password is tumbleweed, and it should change every 2 weeks, or whenever a notice appears in here. Now, since all the rules are out of the way, are there any questions?"

Jim liked this place, for all that there was no ocean or reef or lagoon to build a breaker for. He saw alot of sand on the ride to the school, but no big waves to fall against it. He supposed he could still build a sand castle, but inside the school the sand just ended. No ocean, no sand, but there was a garden with lots of trees, some with thorns the size of his arm. He was pretty sure he could use one for a saber when he finally found that dinosaur. Mr. Barts tried to tell him that dinosaurs all died a long time ago, but then Mr. Barts also said that termites made bad pets, and his termites just loved his room.

His mom said he couldn't bring his termite farm along, so they were all still on the island, along with Emeline, Mr. Barts, and his dad's aquarium with all the piranas.

Sonora was neat, but it didn't have any piranas, and in Jim's book, that meant that surely there was something even better hidden. If not piranas or the ocean, then definitely a dinasaur. One of the cannibal ones. He looked for one the entire way from the room with the good food and loud waterfalls. He looked for one when the potions lady brought them into a big room with furniture and rugs and stuff. He even checked under one of the sofas in case it was a small dinosaur. No dice, though.

The potions lady was talking, and Jim tried to pay attention. Mr. Barts always said a scout should be polite and attentive, even when it was boring or there was a dinosaur to be found. He heard the word 'tumbleweed' and was instantly interested. He knew what tumbleweed was, and it wasn't something his dad could smoke in his pipe. Tumbleweed were giant, thorny balls of sticks that would blow along dusty roads and cowboys would then show up and start shooting each other. Tumbleweed also came with music, and sometimes John Wayne.

Jim put down his backpack and raised his hand when the potions lady finally stopped talking. He had a very important question, and the sooner it was answered, the better. He grinned, making sure to show off his bright blue braces, and asked in a very polite voice, "Where can I find the dinosaurs? The cannibal ones."\n\n
