[Second Year Boy's dorm] The plot thickens... by Stephen Baxter

OOC: Be honest. Who clicked on this post entirely to see what the plot was? Suckers... *snickers* BIC:

Stephen led the way up the corridor into their dorm, dragging his suitcase in one hand and juggling Fido and the tool kit that Alan had given him in the other. After leaning over and using his head to push down the handle and nudge the door slightly open, Stephen backed up a step and kicked the door open before all bar falling though and dropping everything in a heap. Jumping over the resulting mess, he paused, picked up Fido who he carried over to and deposited on his bedside table then threw himself onto his bed.

"See, Ash," he said, putting his hands behind his head, "isn't it cool being back at school? We get this whole dorm to ourselves, and we're allowed to use magic again," the need not to use magic during the break had again been very severely explained to him before the start of the summer holidays. It had included impressive words like 'consequences' and 'expulsion' and 'don't!' (complete with exclaimation mark).

"So..." he said, squirming around for the simple sake of moving. "What are we going to do before the Feast?"

Ash Craven

it's almost at the same level as Stephen now! by Ash Craven

Ash would have offered to help Stephen with the door, but he had his wand in one hand (not a heavy burden, but it was keeping afloat a rather hefty trunk) and his own broom in the other, fencing (or broom-jousting) mask tucked under his arm. Plus it was really funny watching Stephen struggle.

"Smooth man, real smooth," he said, as Stephen practically fell into the room, scattering his belongings. Ash stepped over them, setting his trunk down by one of only two beds in the room. "Oh yeah," he said sarcastically, "Great fun. Can't decide who I'm looking forward to seeing more, the Grump or Painer," he said, giving the nicknames of two of their most disliked teachers, rolling his eyes and flopping down on his bed (without taking his shoes off).

"I dunno," he shrugged, "We could 'unpack our clothes and hang them neatly so that they don't get all creased and make my ironing go to waste!'" he said, in a slightly shrill, nagging voice that - for all it sounded nothing like her - was clearly meant to be his and Sorrel's mother. He glanced at the wall, as if doing so would help him fathom out how his sister was getting on. He hoped the first person she ran into was Liz, and not Princess.

"We could head out to the pitch," he suggested. Beach Quidditch and broom volleyball were all well and good (the twins lived in Florida, close to an all Magic beach) but the one thing Ash really had missed about this place was the full sized pitch.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

What's that supposed to mean, dude? by Stephen

"We could," Stephen agreed, still fidgeting around on his bed. He sat up, moved Fido slightly, patted the broom and then jumped to the floor. "Or..." he started grinning widely at Ash, "we could yell down the corridor at Sorrel."

Sorrel, Stephen felt, had never really reached a full appreciation of the corridor ride... the corridor ride! He hadn't given it a go yet! But no, no. He couldn't just yet. He needed to help Sorrel reach a full and proper appreciation for running full tilt at a corridor and then falling on your back in the middle of the common room.

It was a sacrifice, but one he was willing to make for his friend.

"I'll start," he told Ash, moving towards the door before his roommate could stop him. "Hey, metal-mouth!" His voice echoed down the corridor and into the commonroom.\n\n

What's the matter? Can't work it out? by Ash (and Sorrel)

"Dude, that's my sister," said Ash, frowning slightly, "Only I have teasing rights!" he grinned, as a cry of 'Shut it, slug breath,' came up the stairs.

Sorrel had dumped her stuff in her room as soon as they'd got up here, and had then retreated back down to the Common Room. The corridors' habit of spitting back out people who went up the 'wrong' one meant that there was zero chance of meeting anyone who wasn't a girl if she stayed in the dorms. If she only associated with girls, the chance of running into a girly girl was stronger.

"Y'know," said Ash, who really did want Stephen to lay off Sorrel about her head gear for a bit, but didn't want to actually say so (unless he really upset her), "If we went down to the pitch, we could have a fly and you would still be able to hurl abuse at my sister." \n\n

*scowls* by Stephen

"Dude, she's my best friend. I get to tease her too." He grinned as the retort from Sorrel drifted into the room, but was disappointed with the lack of 'crash oomph' which would have told him that his plan had worked. At least partially.

"Yeah," Stephen said with a glance at Fido who wobbled slightly on the bedside table at the word 'flying,' "but I want to do this first. I don't think she quite realises how fun the corridor ride is. It's like..." he trailed off trying to think of a word that summed it up properly. "Magic."

He grinned at Ash again, then, holding the frame of the door for support, leaned out into the corridor, trying without success to see the commonroom around the bend.

"Sorrie! At least you don't have to wait till the feast to eat... I bet you've still got some of that sweet and sour pork stuck in your braces!"\n\n

Sorrel and Ash

*scowls harder* by Sorrel and Ash

"Fine..." said Ash, "At least I know what I'm getting myself into with her though..." he muttered, as Stephen went to the door frame and hollered again. Ash hoped Sorrel realised it was only friendly teasing. She'd been pretty pissed off with Stephen for a while during and after the food fight at the end of term. He was treading kind of dodgy ground.

In the main room of the commons, Sorrel's rather short temper was rapidly running out. The last thing she needed was Stephen taunting her in a place where Princess could hear him (and get ammunition). But she was powerless to do anything about it. Still, she was rapidly getting beyond rational thought. Perhaps if she started up the corridor and threw something, it would make it the rest of the way and hit Stephen in the head... She wasn't short on items. She'd predicted Ash's want to get back on the pitch, and was sitting with bat, broom and a baseball. She didn't fancy throwing either of the former two. She stowed them under the sofa she was sitting on, anyone who laid a finger on either item would pay.

Springing over the back of the sofa, she ran at the corridor. She decided against saying anything, in case she failed, because then Stephen would just laugh at her all the more. She pelted full tilt at the corridor, and past the 'no girls' line. As soon as she felt it jerking her back, she'd throw. She kept going. A second later, she realised something very bizarre. She was going to make it! She didn't realise it in time to prevent her barelling straight into Stephen, sending them both toppling to the ground.

She lay on top of him in shocked silence for a moment, whilst Ash gawped. Regaining something of her senses, Sorrel scrambled to her feet.

"Warned you to shut up," she said throwing the ball at him (though aiming for his chest, rather than head). Something in how utterly amazed she sounded gave away that actually getting here hadn't been part of her plan.

OOC - cos the info sheet says it's only the girls' corridor that does it, but cos Liz had the boys spit her out last year, I was talking to the head (yeah, I have friends in high up places, so watch it. Especially you, Princess) and she decided that the boys' one works on 'random'. Sometimes it spits you back, sometimes not. It just depends on how it's feeling...\n\n

*sticks out tongue* by Stephen

Oomph!

Stephen found himself falling backwards and landing on the ground - quite heavily - with very little warning. Of course, he realised a couple of seconds later as he stared up into Sorrel's face, that might not entirely be his fault. She was no feather. The initial shock started to wear off and his familiar grin jumped back into place as she scrambled off. He just lay there, grinning at her, impressed that she had made it up there, that she had somehow made it past... "Ho-"

Oomph... "Warned you to shut up."

"Yeah," he agreed, grabbing the ball before it could escape, and then jumping to his feet. "You did. But... how'd ya do it? How'd ya get here? You're a girl!"\n\n

Sorrel (and Ash)

My deep dark secret by Sorrel (and Ash)

Sorrel tried not to look too much like she'd also like to know the answer to that very question, and like she'd come up with some cool plan, which had just fallen into place exactly as expected.

"Well..." she said, licking her lips as she tried to work it out, "Maybe it can detect levels of girliness. And it can tell that I should count as one of the guys. Yeah," she nodded to emphasise her point. "It knows I'm 'one of the guys'."

Ash kept his mouth shut. He was all for Sorrel being counted as one of them, but he knew the corridor had chucked her out before. Maybe it was the hair. She'd got bored of how she'd worn it the previous year, deeming it to be too much effort (putting effort into hair being a girly thing) and it was now in a rough ponytail. Perhaps that had just tipped the scale. It had to be. It was the only thing that was different. Weird...

"Why don't we head out for a game now?" he asked, before the theory could be expanded on. \n\n

one of the guys by Stephen

"Does that mean you won't be able to get into your own room anymore?" Stephen asked even as he had twirled the baseball in his hands and overarm threw it back to Sorrel. He snickered as he made his way back to his bed to retrieve Fido. The broom fairly leapt into his hand seconds before he could complete the action, and he laughed.

"I think Fido's eager to get back into the air, guys. Let's get moving."\n\n
