A Man with a Plan (Tag: Natalie Varth) by Arthur Leithan

Arthur was happy to be back at Sonora and ready to enjoy the new term. He was particularly excited to be starting with the Archery club this semester. He had competed outside of school in the sport since he was young, but had not yet joined the club at Sonora. His parents were enthusiastic about the sport, to the point that they had named his sister Artemis. They had always participated in competitions, and the fact that Sonora had a club had made Sonora an easier sell to his parents when he and Artemis had decided they wanted to attend school in North America. He had gotten a new bow over the holidays, as his old one was now a bit small for him. It was goblin-made and beautiful. It was a match to the one they had given Artemis. His parents had always enjoyed making a big deal out of their being twins. Arthur usually hoped they would give it a rest, but this present combination had been special, and they enjoyed them.

Arthur was relaxing in the Teppenpaw Common Room. He would be going to the next Archery club meeting tomorrow, but he wanted to meet someone here tonight. He had told Natalie about archery when they first began at Sonora, and she had expressed interest, but he didn't think she had attended the club yet, either. He had heard that people were working with partners, and wasn't sure they would have someone extra for him. Nat liked sports and was friendly. He and the other Teppenpaw second years were getting along so well, he was happy he had come to Sonora. If Nat agreed to go to the club with him, there would definitely be someone he could shoot with. Of course, Artemis, who likewise hadn't attended before, had told him she planned to go. But Arthur wanted to remain somewhat independent of his twin at school. They had begun to separate somewhat since they came to Sonora. She was still his closest friend in many ways, and their father's recent illness had brought them even closer, but Arthur was a true Teppenpaw. He was a natural diplomat and sought to increase his circle of friends and social support network whenever possible. It was an important skill in life and a source of enjoyment for him.

Nat's friendly personality had really put him at ease at Sonora when he first arrived. She had asked her conversational partner many questions, rather than speaking about herself at length, the essence of natural charm. Arhtur had had to put serious effort into not ending up talking at length about himself in response, which would have been a social flaw he had been brought up to avoid. He hoped she would consider accompanying him to his first meeting of the archery club to see if she enjoyed it. He could always help teach her or any of the other less-experienced members of the club. He and Artemis had won archery competitions separately and as a team since they were young (beginning with competitions for children, of course).

Arhtur was in luck. Nat walked into the room, and he accosted her, “Nat! Do you think you might want to try out archery club? Assuming you haven't already, of course.” He went on, “I haven't tried the club here yet, but I know Gabe has, and we'll have fun! I've got my own bow, but they will have some there for new people to use, and if you need help learning I can help you. I learned archery at home,” he ended modestly.
