Third Year Girl's Dormitory (Tag Meggie) by Eris Ackart

Over her holiday in England, Eris spent a lot of time thinking about her lack of a relationship with her roommate. She spent a lot of time contemplating her relationships, or lack of relationships in general. Maybe this was because there was a certain fourth year she couldn't get out of her head or maybe it was due to the fact that she felt like she was failing her friends back at Hogwarts. At any rate, she decided that she needed to start being a better person, and a better friend.

At Hogwarts, she'd made friends with her roommates quickly. This was easy since they were the first people she saw in the morning, and the last people she saw at night. She wasn't best friends with them, but they got on well enough and tolerated her casual bout of messiness.

At Sonora, things were different.

Eris got up a little earlier than most since she'd still been learning the castles layout, and she didn't go to her dormitory until later because, well, she had other things on her mind. She felt a little guilty for neglecting a potentially fruitful relationship, especially since they shared a living space. It wasn't much, but Eris secured two extra Christmas crackers from home. One intended for Michael, and the other was to be for her roommate. Eris scribbled out a quick note and set the cracker and parchment on Megan's pillow. She then flipped open her potions book so it didn’t look quite so obvious that she was waiting for the other girl.

Let's make 'em count! by Megan Brownbriar

Megan had spent the majority of Winter Break with her little siblings, taking care of them as her Mum would have wanted her to. Meg loved to spend time with Nia. Pryce and Lowri were sort of annoying, but she pinned that to the fact that they were so much younger than she was. She’d also spent a couple of hours with her Aunt Aeronwen, cousin Gareth and Enion’s Mum. Meg had expressed the desire to spend a little bit of time with her aunt. Knowing that her betrothal meant that she had to grow up (even though she didn’t want to), she knew it was important to learn how to be a young lady. She couldn’t exactly ask her dead Mum, though she wished that she could, she knew someone had to be asked how. The only one she felt she could ask was Gareth’s Mum. She was the closest Aunt, and though Aunt Aeronwen hadn’t picked a favorite niece or nephew, Megan was determined to learn from her. Cepheus had seemingly wanted her to be a lady, but she wasn’t sure if that was what he wanted because it was what his family had wanted, or if he wanted it himself. She wondered how to figure that out for a while, but then gave up on the idea altogether.

The last thing she wanted to happen was that her siblings wouldn’t be able to join her at school, all because of her stupidity in her early years. It looked like that was what would happen, but she hoped it wouldn’t with all her heart and soul. Megan wanted Nia to join her at school so bad she could almost taste it, though she knew that it was probably her fault if she couldn’t join her. I only wish I wasn’t so stupid… Why did I do something like that?! she thought as she walked into her room in Teppenpaw after a very sorry attempt at working on one of her essays in the Library. She’d barely gotten 100 words, but she couldn’t concentrate. She was so tired of being a failure to her family she wondered if she’d turn out just like her cousin Briar…

With a long sigh, Meggie walked into the room that she shared with Eris. She barely knew the new girl. She was a transfer, that the Welsh knew. What she didn’t know was who she was. Glancing over towards Eris on her bed, reading a book, she turned to her own bed and looked curiously at what was on her pillow.

Meg walked over and picked up the parchment first and read what it said before actually looking at the other thing on her pillow. The grin widened on her face as she saw the Christmas Cracker on her pillow. The happy laugh emerged from her mouth. It almost felt like home, there in Arizona.

Her smile turned upside down when the memories cascaded around her like waterfalls. Mum... she thought as all the Crackers she'd pulled with her Mum invaded her mind. No... I will not cry. These are supposed to be good, fun! And she only wanted to become my friend... Meg thought to herself as she forced her tears back, thankfully before any of them emerged from the corners of her eyes.

"I love Christmas Crackers..." she said to Eris, hoping her roommate and hopefully friend, heard her. “How did you know?”

Cheers to that by Eris Ackart

Eris cocked her head to one side as her roommate read her note and then reacted to the cracker. Her brow furrowed slightly as the other girl seemed to be working through—something. They didn’t know each other very well, but it wasn’t hard to tell that Megan was fighting tears. She definitely wasn’t expecting that, she also wasn’t expecting her roommate to be Welsh. At least she guessed by her accent that she was Welsh, she hadn’t said much so it was hard to be sure, but it felt familiar, and Eris appreciated it.

“Lucky guess?” Eris said with a smile, closing her book and setting it beside her. “We had a few extra and I figured I’d bring a bit of home back with me to share. I didn’t realize that a bit of home was right in front of me all along!” She said, brushing her hair back from her face and got a good look at her roommate for the first time. Her own accent was undoubtedly English, but keener ears would pick up on the hint of a Yorkshire dialect.

“You’re Welsh, are you not?” She asked, resting her elbows on her knees and leaning slightly forward. “Did you have a chance to go home over the break? To Whales, I mean. Or do you live in the states now? Did you have a good holiday?” Eris paused, realizing that she’d managed to toss a load of questions Megan’s direction without really giving her the chance to answer. She did that frequently—asked a lot of questions all at once. She was a bit overly curious, almost to the point of being nosey, but she meant well.

“Sorry…” She added, laughing a little as she shook her head. “That was a lot all at once. I do that from time to time. Open my mouth and Merlin knows what falls out all over the floor.”

Meggie

Yes... Cheers to friends (hopefully) by Meggie

Meg was having a hard time trying not to let her emotions tell on her. This was what she wanted most of all right then and there. It was also why she wanted Nia there with her at Sonora too. There was something about the familiarity of her sister and the happy thoughts and memories they’d shared. Nia also remembered their mother, and the sisters spent a little bit of time talking about how much life was different without her (and about how much they both missed her). Once Meggie forced her tears back, she looked up at Eris. Noticing that her roommate’s brow was furrowed, she tried to ignore what she’d been thinking about completely altogether.

When Eris spoke to her, with a smile and set her book down beside her, Meggie listened to her roommate’s words and nodded. “It does feel like home to have them here. The Christmas Crackers, I mean. I didn’t realize there was a bit of home right in my own room either…” she said, as Eris brushed back her hair from her face and Meggie knew she was being almost inspected. In an odd way, Meg was comforted by it. It wasn’t that Eris was really looking at her that was comforting, it was the accent and the words with that sweet Yorkshire dialect Meggie really liked when she was at home.

“Yes, I’m Welsh. We all are. Well, Gareth, Enion and I are, anyway.” she said, as an answer to Eris’ question, before another barrage of questions came her way. “Yes, I got to go home. It gets weirder and weirder every time I go home though. I don’t live here in the States, no, and uhm… My holidays were… interesting…” she said, hoping she caught all of Eris’ questions, without missing any.

“It’s okay.” she said to Eris, after her roommate apologized to her. “It’s okay, really. My sister does it too. I used to also before…” Meggie stopped talking as her heart plummeted downwards again. She sighed softly, not sure if Eris noticed or not. Why is all this happening again? I’ve been fine lately… Why am I missing her now more than ever? she wondered as she looked down at the floor for a moment before turning back up to Eris once again.

“I’m sorry… That happens sometimes, a lot less lately, but, I guess its all in the memories, right?” she said as she picked up the Cracker. “Wanna pull it?” she asked Eris, hoping this would be the start of an actual friendship. Maybe Eris and Meggie could be good for each other. Friends till the end, something like that. Meggie knew that she’d like that very much…
