OOC - this is set the morning after coming back from Midterm. Hooray for fuzzy time.
IC The vibrating plate under Michael's pillow shook him awake and he once again mulled over one of the many thoughts that had kept him awake during the night; to what extent did his room-mates already know what he was about to reveal to them? His elation after telling Brianna about his hearing impairment had lasted a good few hours. She'd been so kind to him and he'd felt so free. It had felt like everyone already knew (indeed, sometimes telling one person could be as good as telling everyone) and the feeling that it was over had been marvellous. But then he had re-entered the school. He had struggled through dinner and he had realised that it had only just begun.
Getting out of bed, it was hard to suppress the urge to reach under his pillow and slip his hearing aids into his pyjama pocket so he could fit them surreptitiously in the bathroom. It had become second nature. The lack of the small box pressing against his leg made him feel lopsided, even though he was now more balanced than before.
By the time he exited the bathroom, his hands were shaking so much that he wasn't sure putting his aids in was going to be physically possible, let alone the emotional demand that it placed on him. Brianna had been kind. There wasn't any reason why these people should be mean or angry. But then, there had never been any reason for kids to pick on him, except that kids were cruel. Reaching under his pillow, he drew out the small plastic box and walked over the bedroom mirror. Brushing his shaggy hair aside, he slipped the little plastic aids into his ears. He switched each on, causing it to emit a small whine of feedback and opening up his hearing to any comments or questions that were about to come his way.
