If owls could speak English, Leopold would have told the bespectacled boy to grow a backbone and deliver the package in person, rather than getting a random school owl to do the job for him. Yet alas, the owl could only hoot disapprovingly, and grudgingly accept the treat offered in payment. Puffing out his chest, Leopold spread his wings with a flourish and took flight. The poor bird loathed delivering anything to the Teppenpaw commons; the room had no windows and so forced him to fly through corridors and vents. That was no way for a bird to travel.
After a short, rather dull and uneventful journey, Leopold reached his destination. He found his target, a fifth year girl by the name of Hannah Laurent, and deposited his load - a small card and a neatly wrapped package. He, of course, didn't care of their contents. When Hannah opened the card, though, she would find a short missive inside, which read, 'To Hannah, I saw this and thought of you. Oliver.'
Once the package - neatly wrapped in smart gold paper and an understated bow - was opened, out would tumble a dainty silver bracelet, inlaid with gems of vivid green glass that were cut to look like real crystals. Oliver had been talked into buying the gift by his brother, Julian, who'd been looking for a present for his current crush. All Oliver hoped was that Hannah liked the bracelet, and didn't think him giving it to her was peculiar in any way. He couldn't quite muster the courage to give it to her in person in case the outcome was negative - this way at least he might have some warning of its effect.
