Professor Deck

“All right there, you lot?” Declan Chatterjee asked, looking over the heads gathered in front of him. He couldn’t recall last year’s first years being quite this small… but then again, the older he got, the smaller they all seemed. Quickly he counted heads, came up with a satisfying total, and nodded once to himself. “Right then. Let’s save the introductions until we’re all cozied up in the common room, eh? Follow me, and try to keep up.”

It wasn’t as difficult to temper his long strides to his charges’ short legs as it had been during last years’ classes; after all, he’d spent the summer with his family in Surrey, and both his mother and half-sister were titchy little things, when it came down to it. In all honesty, Deck himself wasn’t that much of a giant—he came in a few inches under six feet—but still, Maggie hardly came up to his chin. He glanced over his shoulder as he led them through a labyrinth of hallways, up two flights of stairs, and halfway down another. He wondered if they were as surprised by their destination as he had been when Headmaster Bulla taught him the jig to obtain entrance into the Teppenpaw commons; he had to admit, though, it seemed to be one of the best hidden of all the houses. No one expected to find a hidden doorway halfway down a staircase, after all.

“Here, some of you come down past me, then,” he said, motioning further down the stairs. “All of you gather ’round, and try to get the best look at my feet you can.” When they were settled and waiting, he continued. “This step here is where you can find the secret entrance to the Teppenpaw commons—and remember, you mustn’t tell anyone from any other house where to find it, or how to get in. Now, watch carefully—this is what you’ll have to do to get the door open.”

Normally Deck eschewed the more formal robes that many of his colleagues preferred, but since today was such a momentous occasion—namely his first day as the Head of Teppenpaw—he’d deigned to put on a set in a nice shade of moss green that almost perfectly matched his eyes. He lifted the robes a bit to show a pair of rather battered trainers, and felt their eyes follow the movement. When he was certain he had their attention, he performed a series of ten specific steps; to his right, a torchlit, circular stairwell appeared, and he motioned the firsties to go down it ahead of him. Once again, he counted heads as they passed—it wouldn’t do for him to lose a student so early in this gig!

When he’d joined them in the common room, he smiled satisfiedly; while he’d been a Ravenclaw himself, and therefore had expected to find himself more aligned with Aladren, he’d come to find Teppenpaw a most comfortable home-away-from-home. The fire in the hearth was burning cheerfully, and several plush sofas and armchairs upholstered in a more subdued version of the house colors were scattered around, along with a few tables handy for study sessions.

“Welcome, all of you, to Sonora—and to Teppenpaw! I’m your Head of House and Professor of Astronomy, Declan Chatterjee. You can call me Professor Chatterjee or Professor Deck—whichever you’re most comfortable with. The corridor on your right leads to the boys’ dormitories; the one on the left leads to the girls’. That door,” he pointed to one near the stairs, “leads to my own rooms and office. If you ever need anything, just knock; and if you can’t find me there, I’m sure to be in the astronomy wing. Do you have any questions?”

Gwyneth was fortunate enough to be standing close to Professor Chatterjee when he stopped part-way up the stairs. Seh watched intently when he did the ten step jig and the door opened! She was amazed and more than slightly afraid. Not being very physically adept, she wondered what would happen if she couldn't remember the exact stair to stop on or all the steps to the convoluted dance that he did. She didn't have a chance to ask before everyone stepped into what turned out to be the Common Area of the Teppenpaw dormitory.

She listend to the rest of Professor Chatterjee's introduction and noted the direction of the girls' dormitory which she would check out soon, she made a mental note. However, fearing her own lack of memory, she raised her hand to ask Professor Chatterjee a question, "Sir, what would happen if we,. . . , er , I couldn't remember which stair to stop on or if I can't remember all the steps to that dance you showed us? How could I get into my room?"

Professor Deck

Declan was a little surprised at the lack of questions--he was certain that he'd forgotten at least a few things, it being his first Head of House speech, after all--and a little worried, to be honest. He was always a little concerned when things went too easily. Besides, he was eager to fill the role passed onto him by the now-headmaster, Manfred Bulla. For that reason, he smiled warmly when one of the first-year girls raised her hand hesitantly.

"Sir, what would happen if we... er, I couldn't remember which stair to stop on or if I can't remember all the steps to that dance you showed us? How could I get into my room?" she asked.

"Oh, no one expects you to know it right off, so you don't need to worry about that," he reassured her, and the rest of the first years. "There are people coming and going most of the day, so if you get stuck out here, you won't have to wait for long until someone lets you in. Also, there's an outer door to my office in the corridor, so non-Tepps can find me as well; it's the first door at the very top of the staircase. Feel free to knock there anytime you need anything, whether it's an impromptu lesson or just a friendly face." He made good on the last part of that promise already, and turned an amiable and slightly boyish grin onto his new charges.\n\n

Meri

Meri, to her amusement, was relieved that the secret entrance required a jig. Afer Gwyneth raised her hand and voiced her intrepidation, she reached to out to brush her friend's arm.

"Don't worry," she whispered. "I'm clumsy as a fish on land, but," and she half-grimaced, half-grinned, "Mother made me take tap dance lessons like a muggle, and well..." Her voice trailed off, embarassed, and she shrugged her thin shoulders. Her glasses slipped half an inch down her nose with the motion.

"At the very least, you know, I can manage that. So you can stick by me." She smiled shyly. She also thought Professor Deck (she thought Deck suited him more than Chatterjee... it was a friendlier sounding name) looked rather charming. She tore her eyes away from her house leader, and looked around the common room, pleased to see the inviting fire place.

"Ohhh," she sighed happily. "There's NOTHING as wonderful as reading a good romantic fantasy book while being curled up on a soft sofa by the fire..." She found her fingers twitching as if to turn a page in a novel. She glanced at Gwyneth, wondering if she was thinking the same thing. \n\n

Josaih

Josaih watched with mild interest as Deck told them the stair and then showed them all the jig. He tried, clumsily, to get the steps down. He practiced a few more times before following everyone else.

"Sir, what would happen if we... er, I couldn't remember which stair to stop on or if I can't remember all the steps to that dance you showed us? How could I get into my room?" "Oh, no one expects you to know it right off, so you don't need to worry about that," 'Great', thought Josaih, 'so I just learned that all for nothign really, I just need to find a friend who knows it!'

Also, there's an outer door to my office in the corridor, so non-Tepps can find me as well; it's the first door at the very top of the staircase. Feel free to knock there anytime you need anything, whether it's an impromptu lesson or just a friendly face." Well this Deck guy seemed pretty cool!

Suddenly, Josiah thought of a problem. When he looked around at his fellow housemates, the girls way outnumbered the guys. A problem? A blessing! He grinned from ear to ear, but his face fell again. There were only two other guys to share in his joy!

He walked up to Proffesor Deck and waited a bit to see if he was done talking. Then he said, "Proffesor, I have something to ask. You probably mentioned it already and you have my sincerest apologies if I wasn't paying the proper attention, but what subject do you teach?" He gave a small gasp, "Oh where are my manners? Josaih Ashwood, sir," he added with an incline of the head. He wasn't sure if this teacher did handshakes or not. His mother had never mentioned a 'Chatterjee' or a 'Deck'.\n\n

Hikaru was soooooo happy that he had gotten into Teppenpaw, that was the house his mother had been in. He watched as Proffesor Deck did the jig and attempted to mimic him, he wasn't very succesful, but he would need to learn in order to suceed.

As he stepped inside the common room felt warm and cozy and he didn't want to ever leave. He walked into the dorm room and quickly unpacked his stuff. He picked up his gorgeously gilded wand case and smiled to himself, his godmother had gone to the Salem Institute and had been in the house with the dragon in it...he couldn't remember what the house was called. He tied the pack to his belt and picked up his book up with curses in it and went to sit on one of the comfy cussions and digest the book.\n\n
