Waiting for Sneakthief (*coughcogh* Eavan!) by Gil Idoya

As much as he loved his family, it was a relief to get back to Sonora and the almost obnoxiously bright Teppenpaw common room. Don't take that wrong - Gil was very nearly as devoted to La Familia Idoya as his twin was, which was saying quite a lot. But after months of just dealing with the people at Sonora, returning to the overcrowded ranch was almost terrifying. As personable as he was, Gil was nonetheless none too fond of large amounts of people in small places - especially not his bedroom. Usually he just shared that with Leo, but his cousins Joaquin and Alejandro were visiting over break, and had to bunk with them - and as both were over twenty, they took up a good deal of room.

He was also looking forward to seeing his friends, and comparing stories about holiday break. His had been... well, interesting. It was good to see Mami again, and even Papi had seemed unusually affectionate. His little sister Mercedes had grown taller, and inversely cut her hair to an unflattering, boyish length. For a nine-year-old, she was frighteningly feminist.

He hadn't seen much of his twin, though; Leo always seemed to be closeted with Abuelo, and whenever Gil ventured to ask what they were doing, Leo would put his questions off with some excuse about a project. Gil may not be Aladren material, but even he could put two and two together and come up with four - it had something to do with the research Leo had been so obsessed with before break. When Leo did join his siblings and two dozen or so cousins, he seemed oddly distant and almost cold, even worse than Abuelo was. It made Gil worry.

He'd assuaged that worry by distracting himself, mainly by relating stories of Sonora to his cousins, all of whom were or would probably be homeschooled, and his sister, who would start when he and Leo were in their third year. Those stories had put him in mind of his friends - the boisterous Pecaris, Echo and Elly, the second-year Pepper, and especially that firstie Tepp, Eavan. He thought about her a lot, and seemed to talk about her a lot, too. Jacinto teased him about having his first crush, at which accusation Gil had blushed and stammered a protest. He was too young to like girls that way. Cooties, cooties, his younger cousin had taunted him.

That hadn't deterred Gil's stubborn mind, though, and his protests certainly didn't explain why, when he saw the contents of the box currently clutched in one hand, he'd promptly bought it with Eavan in mind.

The box was small, square, and relatively flat, and wrapped in a special shimmering paper Mami had insisted he use. The wrapping job wasn't exactly exemplary - ironically, Leo was far better with his hands than his more mechanically inclined twin - and the ribbon a little crumpled and frayed at the edges, but it certainly looked festive enough.

Now he just needed to find Eavan, and give it to her. With this objective in mind he plopped down into a comfortable chair with the box in one hand and an animated comic book in the other, occasionally peering at the girl's staircase out of the corner of his eye.\n\n

Sneakthief at your service! by Eavan Valentine

Eavan trudged down the steps into the brightly yellow common room. After the weeks of being able to sleep in, getting up before noo was a hassle. But all good things had to end...and bad things as well.

Eavan and Earl, along with the rest of the family had driven up to San Fransisco to visit their grandfather. He was a nice old man, but not very entertaining and the only good part was that she was the only girl and got the best presents. Also, her aunts had sent a multitude of brightly wrapped gifts, but as most of them were magic, they to be kept well hidden from her muggle side of the family.

Anyways, Eavan was making her way down the stairs wearing a pair of her brother's old corderoys and a brand new sweater that she had recieved as a gift. She pulled her hair back into a pony-tail when she reached the bottom and grinned as she saw Gil out of the corner of her eye.

"Hey! Long time, no see, Gil!" she said as she ran over to the chair he was reading in and plopped down on the floor next to it. Eavan's brown eyes went from her friend's face to the parcel he held. You couldn't help noticing it, it was so shimmery.

"Wow...who's the fancy present for?" \n\n

Hm... maybe I should have a codename, too! by Gil

Gil had been determined to keep a steadfast eye on the staircase, so he'd know that Eavan was coming at the soonest possible moment, but by the time she found her way into the common room, he was utterly engrossed in the latest misadventure of Marvin the Muggle.

"Hey! Long time, no see, Gil!"

He jumped in his seat and dropped Issue #358 into his lap, feeling blood rush into his cheeks. Once again he blessed his naturally dark complexion - maybe she wouldn't be able to see that treacherous blush. "Hey, Eavan!" he said, grinning. He opened his mouth to ask how her vacation had been, when she inquired about the gift in his lap.

"Oh... um." Now he was certain she'd be able to see the redness of his cheeks. "It's... well... merry Christmas, Eavan." He thrust the box towards her, already picturing her pulling back the layers of paper and opening the box. The moment he'd seen the fancy magnifying glass - just the glass, no handle, with a gold rim (though it wasn't real, or he wouldn't've gotten for the price he had) - he'd known he had to get it for her.

Suddenly he wondered if she even remembered the incident in Care of Magical Creatures. Oh... that would be mortifying. He also had a sudden realization that he probably shouldn't have had his uncle use an engraving charm around the edge... too sentimental. Way to sentimental, even if it did just say Happy Holidays, your friend, Gil.

He stifled a little groan and wholeheartedly quashed the urge to run back to the boy's dorm and hide under his bed.\n\n

I have to think of one for you... by Eavan

The shimmery package was shoved into Eavan's arms by a rather flustered looking Gil. Eavan gazed at Gil for a moment, before grinning broadly and carefully unwrapping the box.

And then Eavan was confused. A magnifying glass? She picked it up and stared at the fancy gold trim. Then she saw the engraving and a memory of her first Care of Magical Creatures class entered her mind. Eavan's eyes brightened in rememberance.

"Oh, Gil, it's so pretty...I can't believe you remembered. You're the nicest person ever!" Then Eavan lept from the floor and wrapped her arms around Gil's neck, still clutching tightly to the glass.

"I wish I had something for you..."\n\n

Leo: "How about Sir Blush-a-lot?" Gil: *headpalm* by Gil

She liked it?

She liked it!

For a mortifying minute there, he thought she really had forgotten about Care of Magical Creatures - she just gave it this funny look, sort of staring at it bemusedly. But then she grinned - and said it was pretty - and said he was the nicest person ever - and hugged him. His cheeks heated even further, if that was possible, and he returned the hug, grinning like an idiot. "I'm glad you like it - I wasn't sure if... but you do, so, good." He grinned again, so hard that he knew if he kept it up, his cheeks would start to ache.

"Oh, don't worry about me," he said, thinking that really, that hug had been more than enough. She liked him! No - it. She liked it! "Tell me about your break instead!"\n\n

I don't think Gil likes that one :) by Eavan

Eavan finally let go, and still grinning sat on the arm of Gil's chair instead of back down on the floor. "No, but I really do want to get you something...I just wish I could think of something as nice as the magnifying glass you gave me. What do you want? Maybe I could get it for you?"

She set the magnifying glass down next to her, but still holdong onto it loosely. "My break? Oh, you don't wanna hear about it. It was pretty boring. Two weeks at my grandfather's house with all my brothers and cousins and not being allowed to talk about magic. I'm sure your break was so much better than mine."\n\n

*Puts up sign*: NO SNARKY ALADRENS ALLOWED. by Gil

When she released him, Gil was still blushing like mad and grinning like an idiot - two words, he could hear Leo teasing dryly, that suited him perfectly anyway. This effect was only amplified when Eavan went on to insist that she get him something in return. While Gil wasn't quite as pureblood-y as Leo, he had been raised to have good manners and social graces, and knew that at the rate Eavan had protested, it would be churlish to disagree - but there really wasn't anything he could think of. Was there? He cast about for something, preferably something inexpensive. AHA!

"Um... drawing pencils, I guess," he said, dropping his voice even further. "Always wanted to try my hand at drawing..." He watched her hand fall to her side, still loosely wrapped around the magnifying glass, and felt his grin returning as she summarized her break, and then roundaboutly asked about his.

"Oh, it was - interesting, I guess," he said. "It was good to see Mami and Mercedes - that's my little sister - again, and all my cousins and aunts and uncles. We had a couple of crazy pickup Quidditch games." He grinned at the memory of the one in which Leo had been allowed to play Seeker - their team, composed entirely of the younger cousins (versus the older, which really wasn't that fair) had won in ten minutes. "And my cousin Agnese broke her wrist sledding, and then splintered it when she tried to heal it on her own," he said, wincing in sympathy. It had taken Mami and Abuela a long time to fix that damage. "And Leo - "

He stopped himself. Really, Eavan wouldn't want to hear all his worries about how withdrawn and just - strange - his twin was getting. She probably didn't even like Leo, like most of the people here at Sonora. He felt a brief twinge of something that could have been guilt at his disloyalty, or perhaps a stirring anger at the people who wouldn't give Leo a chance - or anger at Leo himself, for not letting them. It was just far too complicated a subject to broach, really.

"So, that's about it," he said with a smile. "Oh, did I tell you, Eavan? I made the Quidditch team!"\n\n

Eavan grinned. Not only had he finally told what he wanted, but it was alomst the same exact thing she had gotten Earl for Christmas. She knew exactly wher to buy drawing pencils and how much they cost.

I know just the ones to get you! I can't wait to see what you draw." Eavan smiled at Gil, thinking that Earl wolud certainly like him and thought to introduce them. Earl didn't like to talk about his drawing ability, but if someone else were interested in drawing as well...

She was shook from these thoughts by Gil telling of his own holiday experiences. He menioned his twin but stopped himself. There was something going on there, but Eavan had the sense not to ask too much. he'd tell when he trusted her enough. She barely knew Leo at all, but from what she'd seen, he as a lot moodier than Gil, and a lot less friendly. There must be something going on there with twins who are so different - this was so different from her twin brohers at home who can barely be seen as two people.

Then she heard the words that she had wanted to say ever since Earl started at Sonora.

"You got on the Qudditch team? That's so awesome! I wanna be on the team, but I missed the tryouts, so...um...what position do you play?"\n\n

*grins* by Gil

Gil was sincerely grateful when Eavan didn't pick up on his slip about Leo and ask; he was certain Nikki Ramirez would've, if she'd been the one he'd been talking to. Then again, as... un-evil... as Nikki was, he wouldn't have bought her a cool magnifying glass, so that would never have been a problem. Would it? He momentarily entertained the situation, trying to picture the blond Mexican in front of him, and found that he much preferred Eavan's messy ponytail and too-big corduroys. He grinned at her.

"Chaser! We've already had one practice; it went pretty well, I guess, but I have a lot of work to do before I catch up with Tally and Dalilah." His smile slipped a little; he hadn't even had a proper try-out for the position--he was just defaulted onto the team, since only seven people signed up in the first place. He really wasn't sure he could do it, even if he was better than even Casimiro and Alejandro when they played back at the ranch, and they were 16 and 19 each. The thought cheered him, and he brightened again.

"You should try out next year!" he said, grasping onto her earlier comment now. "I could help you get ready! That would be so cool, both of us on the team... what position do you like to play?"\n\n

Okay...I can't think of anything... by Eavan

Eavan was listening with rapt attention. She loved Quidditch on hero wn, and after Earl made the team, it just her reason to love it more.

"Oh, I'd be anything if I could just get on the team! But if you're a chaser, then I'd like to be one too. At least then I'd know I was working with someone I liked." She stopped and smiled before contiuing.

"You'd really help me practice? That's so nice of you!" Eavan felt the urge to hug him again, but stopped herself just because she knew that boys usually didn't like to be hugged, and she had already hugged Gil once during this conversation.

"I can't wait for next year now...the only problem is if igot on the team, I would probably have to play against my brother and he's pretty good." She thought about it for a moment, her fingers absently playing with the gold band of the magnifying glass.\n\n

Is someone calling me...? by Gil

Gil smiled when Eavan announced that she wanted to be a Chaser, too. He really liked Tally and Dalila--but it would be really, really cool to have Eavan on the team. His smile widened to a grin when she said that then she'd know she was working with someone she liked.

"Of course I'd help you practice!" he said, looking up at the girl who sat on the arm of his chair (which he had since retaken). "We could talk to Coach Fox about using the school brooms outside of practice or flying class--I'm sure she'd let us, she's pretty cool. I bet Dalila'd help, too, so you could try working as a team, and don't worry about playing your brother, I mean, you must do it at home sometime t--"

Gil stopped suddenly, and craned his neck around to look in the general direction of the entrance. "Did you hear that?" he asked, frowning. There it was again! A pounding noise, and... his name? Someone was shouting for him from outside!

"Hey, Eavan, I'll be right back... I've got to go see what's up," he said, offering her one last smile before going to investigate the ruckus.\n\n

Who could it be? by Eavan

Eavan's grin widened every second as Gil went on about how he'd help her get onto the team next year, but something was going on ouside the common room. She tried to ignore the noise, but she thought she heard Gil's name being called. Apparently Gil heard it too.

"I heard that loud and clear." She watched Gil walk over to the entrance. Eavan was curious as anyone to know what was going on.\n\n
