Dear Miss, will you be my date? [tag any 3-5 year witch]
by Jack Spencer
It was only a matter of time before the ball crept up on him. Jack liked the formality of balls and dressing up no matter how uncomfortable his shoes felt, but he didn’t fancy the pressure of finding someone to go with. Jack assumed his room-mates had found suitable dates, so he wouldn’t be able to go with them. The only witches he was actually acquainted with were Jemima, who had a boyfriend, Laila Kennedy, whom he’d been in a group with last year, and Valenti, his team-mate. Asking one of them to go with him was too scary, and he wasn’t about to ask his sister under the guise of taking care of her.
This was an extremely troubling dilemma as an adolescent wizard.
The holiday had been nice, seeing his family all in one place again, but boredom quickly took over. Adam and Charlotte had moved out into their own flat near the Ministry of Magic, and his mum had taken up gardening to pass the time. As his older siblings weren’t available and his parents were always busy, he’d spent the rest of the holiday reading adventure novels and exercising, just waiting for school to begin again.
Jack flipped his fringe out of his eyes and entered the library, a book under his arm and his book bag slung across his chest. He loved the reliable schedule of academia. The new addition of Astronomy was exciting, and Science Club had already had a session of stargazing together. He hoped the new professor was competent in her subject; none of the Sonora professors had disappointed as of yet, but Jack had learnt to never say never. The library was where Jack was hoping he would run into a nice-looking witch his age who was pretty, would make intelligent conversation and know how to dance a bar or two. Well, he couldn't be that picky now, really.
Jack had a relatively good idea of who was who around here now. Luckily it wasn't a very large school with very large class sizes. He sat down at his usual table, but his eyes were scoping out for a proper candidate. Even a muggle-born wouldn't matter much, as long as she knew how to dance.
There. He'd spotted his target. Jack suddenly felt very nervous approaching his acquaintance, and the fear of rejection almost made him freeze. However, he swallowed his nervousness and stood up on shaking knees. One step forward, then another, then another...
Now, standing next to her, Jack cleared his throat to get her attention. "Hi," he said, hoping his acquaintance wouldn't give him a suspicious look for approaching her so randomly. He stuck his hands into his robe pockets. His fingers kept clenching and unclenching. "So I was thinking, has anyone asked you to the ball yet? If not, would you like to go with me? I think we could have fun together."

It was the second semester without Emrys now and Caelia was worried. She had improved slightly over time with Alistair but she still appeared to be having issues with a variety of the more complex spells. With Emrys it had been her role to be the doting younger sister who needed her big brother in her life. With Alistair she was the adoring friend. With both wizards she was a dependant. And she was kind of tired of feeling like that.
Matthew never made her feel like that. He made her feel like she was on top of the world. He was kind and patient and liked her for who she was. It never once crossed her mind that he liked her because she was kinda stupid. She just thought he liked her in spite of being stupid. And even though it had been awkward at first, Caelia was enjoying how they had rekindled their friendship. Matthew was a nice enough person to write with--so long as she remembered to misspell enough words and didn't mention her time spent with Alistair.
Matthew didn't like her close friendship with the Southwest boy and she guessed she could understand why but it was still frustrating. Even though she liked how Matt made her feel, she didn't like feeling trapped--again. Everywhere she turned she felt trapped. Even around Kelsey and Kira she felt trapped. The weird dynamic between the two cousins made Caelia feel uncomfortable. Kira seemed so hesitant, so careful about Kelsey whereas Caelia's best friend and roommate was bold and confidant. She was happy to reassure Kira when the younger witch worried but she also wanted to scream in frustration each time because she didn't think her friend needed to be insecure about those things.
For once she wanted to relax and not worry about something. And so she retreated to the library. Caelia wasn't normally found in the library as she could get quite frustrated roaming around the times she wasn't supposed to understand, but she had stopped going to the MARS room because it reminded her of the dance club she no longer belonged to. She had really enjoyed the times there since it was a place she could escape from the strict rules she abided by as Caelia Lucan, but in the end it had been overrun by those she wasn't supposed to associate with even though they made her feel relaxed and carefree in a way she hadn't felt since Emrys had first left her seven years ago to attend Sonora. Despite how she had been raised by Grandmother Viviane, Caelia liked Ginger Pierce and her colorful scarves and the twirling aimless with no point except for that it was fun.
And now she didn't have that space anymore. She pulled out a chair and placed the book she had pulled from the shelf on the table before her with a thud, letting her head fall forward onto it with equal force. She didn't attempt to read it because she knew it was probably amongst those texts deemed "too difficult for simple Caelia," but it was thick enough that she supposed it made a good pillow fort for the purposes of just sitting there and trying to block out the rest of the world. A voice pulled her from her thoughts and she turned to smile at the younger brother of her brother's girlfriend(? fiancée? whatever Emrys & Charlotte Spencer were?)
"Sure," she responded politely even though she'd not had much conversation with Jack Spencer one on one before. She supposed he felt as though they ought to get to know each other better since their siblings were so close. "I'd like that very much, thank you for asking." Her eyes glanced towards the heavy book that she'd been hiding behind. An ancient thing on runes and other dusty subjects her brother was sure to enjoy. Perhaps if Grandmother Viviane was the sort to think witches could do everything wizards could do she might have been interested in it too. But instead it had been ingrained into Caelia's brain that a witch's only purpose in life was to please her wizard and that wizards did not like it when a witch could outsmart him. And so from a young age Caelia had staunched her curiosity about the world and learned how to be dumb until, suddenly, she had become completely silly.
"Emrys likes this sort of thing," she found herself saying now, as though she was embarrassed to be caught with such an advanced topic of book. "I just wanted to see what it was all about so that when I see him this summer I could talk to him about it." It was a little white lie but after she said it, Caelia realized that it was true, too. "Do you know anything about runes?"
OOC: thought it could be fun to acquaint the siblings :)

Jack had approached Caelia with the sole purpose of finding himself a date, but getting to know her better wasn't a terrible idea either. Their siblings were most likely going to get married - the sooner the better, according to Mum - and Caelia would be family soon. Jack couldn't imagine what it would mean for his relationship with Charlotte, her being married. His two older siblings had moved out already into their own flat, but Jack would have to get used to seeing their significant others at family events.
In any case, Jack was extremely relieved when Caelia accepted his proposal. He hadn't realised how nervous he'd actually been at the thought of being rejected for the first time, but the feeling of being accepted was very nice. "Brilliant," he replied with a smile. Now at least he could confidently say he was looking forward to the ball. Formal events were fun in some ways, and he hardly had the opportunity to dress up in dress robes unlike Adam and Charlotte.
The book Caelia was hiding behind was curious, and Jack wondered briefly if she was interested in runes. Whilst Jack himself hadn't studied the subject much, he would be impressed if she knew something on the subject. However, her admission was much more realistic, and Jack sat down at her table.
"I don't know much," he said honestly. "It was never a subject that interested me much. I do know they serve some sort of magical purpose, I just don't know what." Jack didn't know Emrys liked that sort of thing; he was sure Charlotte would be bored to death by it. "I love Transfiguration, though," he continued. "I want to be a professor like Professor Skies when I'm older. It's fascinating, even the theories and debates surrounding it."
Jack could go on about academics as long as they didn't talk about runes again, but he knew it wasn't going to last long if Caelia wasn't interested. "Have you found anything interesting in that book?" he asked.
Emrys was really smart. In fact, Caelia thought her brother was probably one of the smartest wizards in the wizarding world. She had nothing but admiration for him. Her admiration rew even more as Jack Spencer disclosed that he didn’t know much about runes. Jack Spencer was an Aladren like Emrys and, Caelia thought, was probably one of the smarter wizards in their year. He further confirmed this as he admitted his desire to one day be a Transfiguration professor. Only someone who was truly smart would enjoy theories and debates over one of the harder branches of magic, Caelia thought.
As he joined her at the table she smiled at him and moved the heavy book over so that he didn’t have it cluttering the space in front of him. She was glad that runes weren’t something that Jack knew an awful lot about because she knew that not only just as an Aladren but also a wizard he was a lot smarter than she was and despite knowing it was her place to be less intelligent, she really didn’t like it when she was made to feel stupid by others when they engaged her in intellectual conversation.
But being asked if she had found anything interesting in the book, that was something that Caelia though was okay to admit. Showing interest in something was not the same thing as showing off ones’ smarts, she had been taught by her grandmother, and besides that she would one day be expected to show interest in whatever it was her future husband was interested in and some of the more intellectual pursuits would hopefully be among those.
“I suppose there are a few things that I don’t understand,” she admitted. “I’ll probably ask Emrys about them when I see him this summer. He offered to let me stay with him for a week. My parents think that would be nice but I don’t think my grandmother is too pleased with that idea—she likes to have me around, you see. But he promised to come visit me if I can’t go visit him.” Caelia really missed her brother. Alistair was nice but he wasn’t the same.
“Anyway, Emrys really likes everything old, he was interning at this bookshop—” Caelia wasn’t sure how much of Emrys’ life Jack knew about since she didn’t know if he was as close with Charlotte as she was with Emrys. “—I thought it was the perfect fit for him, really. And they offered him a full time position and he took it, you know, but I don’t know…he seems like he wants more out of life than just sitting in that dusty shop all day…” Caelia frowned slightly. It was not polite to take family matters outside of the family, but Jack was practically family—or would be any day once Emrys got his crap together and asked Jack’s sister to marry him anyway.
But they were not family yet so instead of continuing or elaborating why she thought that, Caelia just shrugged. “But what do I know? I’m just the little sister.” And, changing the subject to focus on Jack’s interests—because it was always polite to talk about what interested other people, she asked after what she assumed to be his favorite subject.
“You’re one of the lucky ones though, I’m not sure if I’ll ever fully grasp transfiguration, is it just natural for you?” Studying was not her strong point, neither was memorizing large portions of text, and it was certainly lady-like that she wasn’t leading her class or anything, but she still desired to be smarter than she felt most of the time.
