Missing my best friends (tag Ava and Seal)
by Dimitri Porter
Dimitri showered after the welcoming feast back in his dorm room and dressed to go meet with Ava in the Library for their gift giving tradition.. He made certain that he wore the tie Ava had given him for Christmas last term. He found the design on it almost hypnotizing in its simple beauty. The patterning was unlike anything he had seen before and it almost seemed to give him a sense of peace in a way. Not that his life was hectic or anything, but it made him feel at peace all the same. Dimitri checked his reflection in the full length mirror that sat inside his clothing armoire and after making sure he looked his best, he gathered up Ava's present and made his way towards the Library.
On the way there he thought about the feast briefly and smiled lightly. He knew that as much as Ava liked him as a friend that it was good she was branching out and trying to make new ones. He had almost come over to the Aladren table after the Headmaster's speech, but stopped when he spotted her chatting with one of the new first years in her house. Not wanting to interrupt or make her feel uncomfortable, he hung back this time telling himself that there was no way she would miss their yearly gift exchange. Dimitri carried the fairly decent sized box under his arm as he made his way to the Library. He had found it at a merchant's tent during their yearly family camping trip and he just knew that Ava would love it.
It was a large-ish lap blanket that depicted a mermaid sitting on a rock in front of a large castle surrounded by water. It was warm and soft (well soft by girl standards anyway). His twin had been kind enough to point out the softness factor to him. He shook his head when he thought about it. He knew Darina had meant well and he appreciated her assistance even if he hadn't asked for it. He reached the door to the Library and quietly went inside. He found their usual spot and sat down on the chair to wait. He placed her gift on the small table between the chairs and settled back against the cushions. He thought about the summer while he waited for her and Seal to arrive.
The family's trip to Pennsic this year had been especially interesting mostly due to who had decided to join them this year. He knew his cousin Clara had been interested in what they did for fun for a while which was why she had tried learning how to fence. She had spent most of her summer in Europe with her betrothed and his family at his uncle's insistence. Dimitri actually felt bad for her since he was pretty sure she was sore about being shipped off for the summer. She had come home from Europe about a week before he and his family were set to leave for Pennsylvania. She had managed to talk his mother and his uncle into letting her come with them. His parents and sister were delighted to have her. Dimitri had shrugged. It hadn't mattered to him whether she came or not.
He had entered the young Bards tournament as he had planned and took third place which he was pretty happy with. Since there were close to about 120 other bards that he had been competing against, taking third out of 120 didn't seem so bad. He had finally finished the song he had been working on for almost two years and while it wasn't the most spectacular thing he had ever written, it was his first song ever and that alone made him proud. He laughed as Darina dragged Clara to the marketplace and took her shopping amongst the merchant tents. They returned to camp with soo much stuff Dimitri couldn't help wondering where they were going to put it all. He was especially curious as to where Clara planned on putting the fencing foil she had bought. He was pretty sure he could guess who that was for and grinned. He was especially glad he didn't share her current dilemma.
He had entered the novice fencing tournament and had gotten creamed, but enjoyed every minute of it. He had talked Clara into entering and she did a tad better than he had, but not by much. They had packed up to leave a few days before the event actually ended so they could make sure that the three of them could make the coach back to school. Since his cousin had come with them it only made sense to his mother that she travel back to school with them instead of sending her home. Dimitri hadn't cared either way. He was just glad that Clara seemed to be less moody that she had been. So when the wagon arrived to collect them he was much happier about going back to school.
A soft thud sounded from somewhere behind him and he was almost sure he heard footsteps. Dimitri turned in his seat to see if he could catch a glimpse of whomever may or may not have entered the library. His shoulders slumped a bit when he didn't readily spot anyone. He almost began to entertain the idea that she may have forgotten, but quickly banished such notions. She wouldn't forget. This meant just as much to her as it did to him...didn't it? He was sure it did. She was his best friend after all. She wouldn't forget.

After the feast when Ava had chatted with Raven, a new first year, she was feeling pretty good about herself. She decided to go back to her dorm room to freshen up before venturing to the library and see if Dimitri was there. Over the summer, her face had thinned out a little, loosing some of the childish chub to her cheeks. She had also decided to cut her long, light brown hair to a more easily manageable just below shoulder length. Now, she took her enchanted hairbrush, a last minute gift from her mother, and ran it through her hair, confident that the result would be perfectly straight. She had seen that a lot of the other students in their year were looking- and dressing older. Chloe Jareau, for example, had done up her hair nicely. Ava wasn't quite at the point yet but she did (for some explainable reason) want to look presentable when she met Dimitri.
The pets had already made it to the rooms along with the trunks and Ava stroked Seal's head softly before opening her trunk and unpacking. She didn't know if Dimitri would remember their tradition and didn't want to appear too eager though she desperately wanted to say hi and catch up. Instead, she hung her robes and folded away her skirts and tops into the dresser before changing into a white sweater and dark blue jeans. She opted not to wear shoes- the library was just outside the common room door after all, and she slipped her feet into her nice, fuzzy socks, dark blue to match her house colors. She pulled a matching dark blue ribbon from her top drawer and tied it around the top of her head like a headband. Ava had pondered over what gift to give Dimitri for awhile, there were a lot of things that he seemed to be interested in and ended up deciding that as he wasn't Muggle (nor raised by a Muggle like she had been) perhaps a Muggle gift would be nice. He probably wouldn't have it- whatever she ended up giving him, and that was a good thing.
Ava tucked Dimitri's gift under one arm and picked up Seal into her other but the grey cat jumped out of her arms preferring instead to weave around her legs as if his sole purpose in life was to cause her to fall flat on her face in front of Dimitri. "Seal," she scolded lightly as she headed out the door. When she got to their area of the library, she felt guilty. Dimitri was already there and looked like he had been waiting. She hurried over to him and plopped down into the seat rather inelegantly. "Hey," she said breathlessly. "I hope you haven't been waiting here long! I'm so sorry, I had packed your gift," here she gestured to the package in her arms, "in my trunk but once I got to it I just had to finish unpacking."
This wasn't a complete lie. His gift had been packed in her trunk but it had been at the top and she could have easily grabbed it and left. However she had decided instead to unpack and change into fresh, untraveled in clothes. Oh well, it was in the past now. "I see you're wearing the tie from Christmas last year!" She smiled at him happily and placed his gift- a nice hardback copy of Shel Silverstein poems, on the table between them. "So, how was your summer?"
You know how to make a guy feel special

Dimitri twiddled his thumbs a bit as he waited for Ava to arrive. He heard a sound behind him and turned to see Ava and Seal enter the library. He smiled as he watched Ava dump herself in the chair nearest his and waved to her silently sighing in relief. He knew she wouldn't forget. His cheeks colored a little when she noticed that he was wearing the tie she gave him last term. He absently ran his hand over it when she mentioned it and nodded. "Well yeah...it seemed appropriate for our meeting tonight," he began absently. "That and it matches my shirt," he told her grinning.
He grinned bigger when he spotted the gift she set down on the table next to his. Judging by the size of the wrapped package, Dimitri guessed it might be a book of some kind or a new shirt. He fought the urge to pick up the brightly wrapped package and give it a test shake. Instead, he waved off Ava's apology and assured her that he hadn't been waiting very long. "Its no big deal," he assured her. "Really I think I've only been waiting for less than five minutes." Truth be told he had absolutely no idea just how long he had been sitting there waiting, but it didn't matter. He would have waited all night if need be.
He sat quiet for a second as he figured out in which order he should list the events of his summer activities. While he was collecting his thoughts he felt something furry moving up around his legs. He glanced down and grinned when he caught sight of Seal rubbing on his legs. "Hey buddy," he crooned to the cat. "You didn't miss me did you?" he teased the cat as he scratched Seal under his furry chin. "My summer went pretty well," he answered. "My family went on our yearly camping trip and strangely enough my cousin Clara joined us this year," he told her. He chuckled to himself as he thought about her going with them.
"I got to see her dressed up in medieval clothing for two weeks. She and I entered a novice fencing tournament and got annihilated, but we had a blast losing." He rolled up his sleeve a bit to reveal the nice sized bruise he had gotten from his last opponent during the tournament. "I got this beauty here just before I was murdered in the tourney," he showed her the bruise. Once he was sure she saw it he took his forearm back and continued his tale. "My cousin has a bruise almost as pretty on her forearm as well. She was taken out just after I was." He smiled with pride at their accomplishment. "I entered that amateur bard competition I had mentioned before and took third place out of 120 participants," he told her proudly. "My song stunk, but it was still pretty cool to get that far." He chuckled to himself as he thought about how bad it was.
He finished up by telling her about his sister and cousin's shopping trip through Merchant's Row. "I swear I have never seen my sister or my cousin buy soo much stuff in my life," he chuckled. "I had no idea where the heck they were going to stuff it all." He shook his head. "My sister was instrumental in my finding your present this year," he confessed sheepishly. "She spotted it while they were out shopping and just had to drag me over to where they had found it." He shook his head again thinking about it. "I have to hand it to her though. She was absolutely right when she said it would be perfect. Well...I definitely hope its perfect," he admitted sheepishly. He gave her his best sheepish grin and paused for a second. She looked a little differently than normal and if there was one thing Dimitri learned from a family full of girls if a girl looks different than normal she's done something different with herself that she wants people to notice.
"Forgive me for asking," he ventured, "but did you cut your hair or something? It looks like it might be shorter than I remember it being. Its not bad or anything...I was just curious," he assured her hoping he hadn't just hurt her feelings. Switching topics quickly so she wouldn't notice if he had just stuck his foot in his mouth he asked about her summer. "So enough about me. How was your summer?" he asked hoping to take the attention away from himself. "Did you and your grandpa get to do anything exciting? Did you get to see your mom?" He knew that all probably came out pretty quickly, but he was really curious to know. She always looked happier when she talked about them both. He wanted to see that happiness before she opened her Christmas present.

It's nothing like the feeling of belonging.
by Ava Fletcher
Ava smiled at Dimitri when he blushed. "It does, doesn't it," she gestured to his shirt. "Go with it, I mean. I'm guessing it was a better gift idea than the fudge, yes?"
She tilted her head a little and watched Dimitri scratch Seal's head. "He missed you too, I am sure of it," she teased him. "Look how he rubs his head into your hand."
Ava's cat had never really had a huge problem with people before (she had lucked out with him like that) so she wasn't surprised when Seal had warmed to Dimitri so easily. Although she couldn't really blame Dimitri for being nervous if he'd had bad experiences with cats before.
"We're third years now. Are you excited" She asked. "I feel like we actually belong here now. Do you know that at dinner a first year asked me to show her around the school? I felt so proud to be asked for help! Do you suppose that's what the next four years will be like?" If so, then she thought she might like it.
His camping trip sounded fun- dressing up in Medieval clothing and running around a Renn Fair. She'd always wanted to go to one. And to go as a family sounded even better. She gasped audibly when she saw his bruise. "That looks like it hurt!" She exclaimed. "What I would have given to be a Healer at that tournament! I bet there were tons of interesting injuries peoples needed treating!"
Perhaps her interest in the injuries was a bit morbid, but she wouldn't help it. Ava briefly wondered just how different a Renn Faire apothecary would be from a modern day one. But Dimitri wasn't done yet. Apparently he had won third place in his bard competition. "That's great!" She gushed. "Number three out of 121 is really good! Perhaps you'll perform it for me one day?" She raised an eyebrow impishly.
Dimitri's sheepish look made Ava smile. "I'm sure I'll love whatever it is you give me." She pushed her present towards him, feeling impatient and wanting to see if he liked, but he asked her about her hair before she was able to. The disappointment only flickered on her face for a slight moment before she smiled again and answered his question.
"It's okay, yes, I cut it. I thought it was getting too long and getting paint out of it was starting to be a nightmare." She rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "I can't very well just stop getting paint everywhere, so of course the hair had to go."
Cutting her hair had been the only exciting part of her summer. Ava shrugged. "I spent a lot of it in my room reading up on medical books. Mostly about diseases and such. How Aladren of me, right?" She shook her head. "I did improve my art though, speaking of which. I did a sunset sketch every night. I have the sketchbook here. I brought it to show you," here she paused realizing something terrible. "I can't believe I forgot it! Perhaps another time?" Ava frowned a little, her forehead wrinkling, her lips pursing as she thought about it. "But my summer wasn't very interesting, you don't want to hear about that. Why do't you open your present?"
Now, Ava picked up the wrapped book and put it in his hands. "I picked it out because it's my favorite of this author's books," she said once he opened it. "Also, the very first poem reminds me of you a bit." She blushed slightly, embarrassed saying that statement to him made her want to blush.
*OOC: The book is Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstien and, in case you'd like it for reference or want to have Dimitri read it, here's the poem:
Invitation If you are a dreamer, come in. If you are a dreamer, a wisher, a liar, A hope-er, a pray-er, a magic bean buyer . . . If you're a pretender, come sit by my fire, For we have some flax golden tales to spin. Come in! Come in!
