Headmistress Kijewski-Jareau

June 08, 2013 6:27 PM
With the previous Librarian no longer at the school and a new Librarian yet to be hired, Kiva took it upon herself to continue on with the Library Assistant/Monitor program that DiAnna had established. It was only right and the kids who joined seemed to enjoy helping out in there. If the program had been established during the time that Kiva had been a student, she would have likely had been one of those roles. Taking out a parchment, Kiva began the short notice for the students to read.

Students are encouraged to help out in the library during the school year. There are two roles that are available. The first role is that of the Lirbary Monitor. The Monitors help to check books in and out of the library, organize the books in the stacks, answer any questions that fellow students may have, and complete occasional errands that may be needed. The second role is that of the Library Assistant. This roles has fewer responsibilities. Their role consists of returning books to their rightful place in the stacks and assist the Library Monitors with whatever duties need to be filled. If you are interested in either of these roles, please sign your name and the role that you are requesting. Prior experience will be considered for the role of Monitor. For any questions, please see Headmistress Kijewski-Jareau or Deputy Headmistress/Coach Pierce.

Deciding that was about the best explanation she could give on the positions and still do DiAnna justice. Kiva hung the notice on the bulletin board located in the Library with another parchment placed beneath it for names. She would place the notice on the school board to appear in each common room as well advising to sign up in the Library. Hopefully, there will be sign ups. It would help Kiva immensely while the role of the Librarian remained open.

Thaddeus Luther Leebridge III

June 08, 2013 10:08 PM
It was with excitement that Thaddeus signed his name on the notice posted in the library. His penmanship, honed by years of lessons, was neatly canted to one side as if it were headed somewhere in a hurry.

Thaddeus Luther Leebridge III, Library Assistant

Putting away his quill, Thaddeus made sure he was utterly alone in the stacks before permitting himself a very small shout of glee. As soon as it had left his lips, he flushed guiltily; it was not in his nature to disturb the sacred silence of the library, alone or otherwise. It remained to be seen if the position of Library Assistant would merit his little breach of etiquette, but Thaddeus certainly hoped it would. Since classes had begun, he'd been spending entirely more than his fair share of time buried in the stacks and curled up in his favorite studying armchair. What he really wanted was an excuse for this behavior, and having a library-based job ought to do it. His pathetic academic rationalizations for cloistering himself in the reference section would be replaced by more legitimate vocational ones, thus justifying what would otherwise be seen as an antisocial tendency to avoid meaningful interactions with his classmates.

For a moment, Thaddeus allowed himself to wallow in the folly of that line of reasoning. Once the moment had expired, though, he swept his way back towards the inviting shelves. It wouldn't do to dwell on his own shortcomings when there were words to be read and other lovely tidbits of knowledge to be acquired. Thaddeus chose a book at random, separated it from its fellows, and headed back to the common room to open it up and discover what was inside.

Thaddeus Pierce II

June 08, 2013 10:59 PM
Thaddeus Pierce was still a bit sore about not getting prefect, but he did see a silver lining and opportunity in the school's lack of a librarian this year. He didn't exactly expect to become the librarian - he had classes and homework and Quidditch practices and so forth - but he'd had every intention of taking over as many of Ms. Diaz's responsibilities as was possible for a fifth year student. Thus, when he saw the Headmistress's sign-up sheet, his first reaction was, somewhat irrationally, anger. He had wanted to put up the Monitor/Assistant sign-up sheet and recruit new minions for the library. The only reason he hadn't already was that he wanted to check in with Alicia and Henny about it first to see if they wanted to be co-librarians with him.

Worse, he wasn't even the first name on the sheet. Somehow, Other Thaddeus had gotten there before him. He took a moment to be confused that Luther was not T.L.'s surname, another moment more to be surprised that Leebridge was a proper family and the kid wasn't a muggleborn after all, and a final moment to be pleased that the person who shared his name was also a bibliophile. Thaddeus had intended to recruit the younger Aladren to exactly this position, had the boy not run off before he'd had the chance to broach the subject. It was good to see a hard sell was not necessary after all.

Thaddeus wasted no time in adding his own name second on the list. He had kind of imagined taking on a bit more than he had as a mere monitor last year, so he debated a moment before finishing off his line with his desired responsibility.

Thaddeus Pierce II, Library Monitor/Librarian Substitute

He stepped back and considered it for a moment, then nodded and decided that was an acceptable description of the role he wished to fill. Having already designated the next two hours to library work, as he had at this time every day since term had begun, he opted to take it upon himself to fulfill his self-appointed substitute role once more and sat down at what had been Ms. Diaz's desk so he would be available to check out books and to answer any questions that any of the library visitors might have. It was, after all, the first week of classes. There would be homework assigned already. Some people might need to check out books before monitors were chosen formally by the school's actual administrators.

Clara Abernathy

June 09, 2013 12:53 AM
Clara couldn’t help being curious what the school planned on doing with the Library duties now that there was technically no Librarian. She knew that they had had an assistants/monitors program and wondered if it was being used for this term as well. She left Pecari Commons and headed into the school towards the Library to take a peek. Upon entering the Library Clara saw the empty desk where the Librarian would be and sighed. She really liked the old Librarian and wondered if they were going to get a new one any time soon. She sighed once before heading to the Library bulletin board and found the sign-up sheet for assistants/monitor(s). She noticed a couple of names were already on the sheet and dug in her bag for a pen to add her name to the list.

She finally found the self-inking quill pen she was searching for and neatly wrote her name underneath Thad’s. Clara Abernathy, Fourth Year, Assistant Position. She figured after reading the descriptions of both positions she could definitely do the assistant’s job with little to no problem and still be able to get all her stuff done that year. She was a little apprehensive about putting her name down for monitor since she really had no experience with it. It wasn’t that she didn’t think she couldn’t do it, but with tougher classes this year, baking club and now Quidditch, she wasn’t certain she could give the position the proper attention it would need or deserve. She did feel, however, that the assistant’s position she could give the attention to that it deserved despite the other things she had already committed to. Doing what she came to do, she left the Library and headed down to Cascade Hall to grab some lunch before she went back to the dorms.

Henny B-F-R

June 09, 2013 3:30 AM
Henny had been wondering what would happen, in the absence of the librarian. As far as she could tell, the staff had taken on the duties between them, in that she rarely saw anyone in there but the place didn't seem to be falling apart. That seemed the most logical explanation. She had occasionally seen Thad sitting behind the desk but hadn't yet asked him why. She assumed he was just trying to be as helpful as possible, even if it seemed a little presumptive. For her own part, she always filed her own books herself after using them – it had always been her habit and it made even more sense now, ditto the rounding up of stray books left by others. When she checked books back in, she tended to pick up any others off the returns trolley and put them away too.

She was pleasantly surprised when someone put up a sheet for library monitors. She liked continuity, and she enjoyed working in the library. She signed herself up for a monitor position, noticing Thad's additional flourishes. She thought his went a bit far but she was happy to go above and beyond. She thought perhaps about just raising this at the meeting. But who knew whether they'd have one? And something told her Alicia would follow Thad's suit. She had no desire to look like the laziest of their little group, especially as she was a prefect and supposed to setting a good example, not lagging behind everyone else.

Happy to take on additional duties if required, she added next to her name. That showed she was willing to stretch herself and to do more than she had until the librarian was replaced but it wasn't quite making a bid for the role herself.

Alicia Bauer

June 10, 2013 2:14 PM
Alicia’s first reaction to the list was to laugh. Thad could, after all, almost always do that to her. If she hadn’t been…what she was, she thought the two of them might have been so similar as to invite comparisons to his slightly creepy little cousins; whether it would have been for the best was another question, one which made her wish there were other realities, so she could view them and answer, once and for all, whether they really were in the best of all possible worlds. She had never decided which she thought was worse, the idea that they were or the idea that they were not.

Her second reaction, though milder than it would have been if not for her friend’s accidental moderating influence, was a spasm of frustration. She hadn’t been quick enough, and now the Headmistress got to feel competent. And she was late to the party anyway. And Henny was going to share in the high places, meaning she would still be just a little bit better than them. That last, Alicia tried to smother – Henny was her friend, she couldn’t go on like this, she had to forget about it, move on, play the game she was in instead of the one she wanted and do what she could to win it now – but it was still there, just a little. She had let Henny into her circle because Thad also liked her, but the only reason Alicia had ever trusted her roommate enough to call her a friend was because Henny simply had never registered to her as a threat. So much for her being paranoid.

Her third reaction, as she sought to distract herself from her second, was curiosity about the new people. That was something interesting, something she could work with. She had always wanted minions, and for some reason, inexplicable to her in the extreme, as she would have hated someone like her when she was eleven and twelve, younger kids seemed to like her. At least those of their type, anyway. This could work out well enough.

She signed herself up: Alicia Bauer, Monitor/Library Coordinator/Whatever is needed

Coordinator, she decided, would suit her. She had finally decided, before the end of the summer, that she could stand to let Thad be the king as long as he was willing to let her play the queen, and that was the position which she could most easily turn into being the one who made and managed the schedules. Trained the new people. Perhaps had an event or two – study sessions around exam time leapt to mind. She could, she thought, half-proudly and half-bitterly, turn anything to her advantage, even her friend making a grab for the top job.

Once that was done, she went to the desk herself and tried out the throne. It was hardly the best chair she had ever used, but it sat, she decided, pretty well.

Then she started writing. She had things to do. Sorry, loves, she thought in the general direction of Thad and Henny’s signatures on the list. She had to start asking forgiveness rather than permission, from the staff and her friends alike – she had to send a note to Ava, get her first year into this so she and Thad would each have a clear advantage over Henny’s position, and then, she thought she would have a library tour. Her friends could help, of course, with the actual event, but she was going to be the one who put her name on it. That way, all the risks and most of the benefits would be hers in the long run. Besides, someone needed to do it. Miss Diaz had shown her year everything when they arrived at Sonora, someone ought to show the first years the same charity as well.

Waverly Canterbury

June 10, 2013 11:11 PM
With a shiny new Prefect badge on her chest, Waverly walked into the library to see if there would be any help needed. She had been volunteering at this library since her first year and she wasn't about to stop now. The library needed more help than ever now with Miss Diaz gone. She looked at the sign up sheet and saw most of the same people had written their names down. There were a couple new people, like Clara and another Thad. That would get confusing.

The positions some of her peers were putting down, however, seemed a little far-fetched. Librarian Substitute? Library Coordinator? It almost looked like a challenge for Waverly to think of something even grander, but as much as she would have loved to, she did have her Prefect duties to think of, the Baking Club and her homework, not to mention the CATS they were expected to take at the end of this year.

She did want to help out in any way she could, though, and maybe writing down something a little more creative would make her stand out a little more to the Headmistress. She probably wouldn't be able to match either Thad or Alicia, but that was okay. She was just Waverly and that was cool too.

Waverly eagerly wrote down her name. She couldn't wait for work to start on the library. Maybe some big changes would happen now that Miss Diaz was gone. She did miss the librarian a lot, but she hoped Miss Diaz was doing well wherever she was headed. Waverly Canterbury, 5th year, Library Monitor. After a thought, she added in parentheses, Let me know where else I can help! I would love to help out more.

There. Hopefully that would be enough. Waverly was glad she had decided to stop in here after all.

Ava Fletcher

June 12, 2013 5:07 AM
When Ava wandered into the library for probably what had to be the billionth time since she'd arrived at Sonora and had that encounter with T.L., as she started walking, the first thing she noticed was a new posting on the bulletin board asking for library monitors and assistants. Ava smiled to herself- this sounded like something Alicia had mentioned to her the first night. Or at least, she thought it did. Perhaps she was making that part of the conversation up but no matter. Ava knew immediately that she wanted to sign up. Imagine if she was actually picked to do something! Writing home to Papa would be so amazing, he'd be so proud and sure to tell her mom who would also be proud and- Ava's smile grew larger. That would be just even more amazing! Not to mention the fact that she'd be surrounded by her love even more now than she already was.

Ava took a quill out from her bag and scribbled her name under the latest person's. She stood back a bit and thought, then added her year, unsure if they were needed. Ava then realized that no one else had put their year down and felt quite stupid but didn't cross it out as she figured the Headmistress didn't know who she was and if for some reason she thought Ava was older than 11, well, Ava wasn't one who wanted to disappoint. She bit her lip. The other students had put down these creative ideas for what they wanted to do, but she wasn't really sure what to write so instead she simply wrote a small message that would include every possibility.

Ava Fletcher, First Year- Anything that you think I could handle, I just want to help because I love books and libraries smell delicious.

"There, that should do it," she smiled happily to herself, seeing not only Alicia's name above hers but also T.L.'s, a boy who she thought she'd been getting along with well- before he suddenly ended their conversation in flying lessons that is and taken off- quite literally. Ava frowned at the memory. Maybe she had read him wrong, maybe he didn't like her and thought she was stalking him. She wasn't, she told herself decidedly. But her signing up for the position might make him think she was. It was too late now anyway, Ava sighed. Besides, she liked books and he knew that. She'd told him so herself so logically speaking there was no reason for anyone to think she was stalking him at all.

Ava tucked her quill back into her bag and looked for an empty table to begin her classwork. She didn't feel like working in the common room today or on her bed either, so she picked a table off to the side and spread out her books and parchments. Time to hunker down and finish off that essay she'd been putting off and maybe if she had time to spare before dinner she'd be able to get in a few pleasure reads. There was a particular book on the second shelf to her right about healing that she was interested in starting.

Aubrielle Thornton

June 14, 2013 6:05 PM
Brielle had wanted to become a Library Assistant or Monitor the year before, but there were more pressing issues to deal with at the time. Now, as she was growing up, realizing that it was important to have good things on her resume, she was going to do it regardless of her busy year. Sure, there were still a lot of issues that she was dealing with, but at this point in time it was better for her to keep busy rather than have free time.

The Teppenpaw knew that without a Librarian, it was even more important that the Library be taken care of and Bri understood that. She knew Clara and Waverly wanted to do it and she knew it would be fun to do it all together. In fact, whenever the three of them were together there was always something fun that happened as well as some sort of learning experience and that was what school was all about, right? she asked herself as she walked into the Library to see the signups there. There were many names on the list ahead of hers, and that just meant it would be more even with responsibilities which in her mind, was a good thing.

Bri didn’t care if she was a Monitor or an Assistant and she wrote it so on the sign ups she saw for it. Both positions sounded good to her, she’d leave it up to the Headmistress and Deputy Headmistress themselves to pick which one. Aubrielle Thornton, Monitor or Assistant, whatever is needed more she wrote on the page.

After that, she walked over to the history section and picked up one of the books about Muggle History her cousin had recommended to her about the Medieval Era and started reading it, getting sucked into it almost like a vacum cleaner that she didn’t realized it had gotten so late. The lights dimmed in the room, that was the only thing that told her of the time change. She looked at the page she was on and closed the book, put it back on the shelf and walked back out of the room to the Teppenpaw Common Room.

Irina Volkov

Irina had no idea how she was going to fit one more thing into her busy schedule, but when she saw the sign-up sheet in the library for Library Monitors and Assistants, she knew she just had to. It wasn’t just that it would look great on her resume, but she thought it was something she would actually enjoy. She had a passion for books and for writing so spending her time in a library was like a dream. Looking over the options, she knew that she wasn’t eligible to be a library monitor. She had no experience and right now, she didn’t really want that much responsibility. She was still working on finding her place in the school. However, library assistant didn’t sound so bad. She could handle returning books and helping out as needed. It would actually be fun, because it would give her a chance to explore all the various books that were housed in the library.

Opening her bag, she pulled out a self-inking quill. The Aladren always kept one on hand for moments like these. Otherwise, she liked the more traditional quills that required the use of a bottle of ink. It made her feel more like a writer in that way. It was more genuine, she supposed. However, this was not for one of those moments. Thankfully, being so organized, the quill was available right in the front. Taking it, she carefully signed her name onto the sheet including what position she was interested in.

Irina Volkov, First Year, Library Assistant

Satisfied that it looked professional enough, Irina went wandering through the stacks for fun. There was an amazing history section that included not only wizarding history, but muggle as well and one that mixed the two showing how the lines crossed. She would have to check those out sometime. Moving along, she came across another section, which had spell books of all sorts. Irina made a note of where they were. Those would be most useful for class work. The more she went on, the more the possibilities seemed endless. It was a home away from home.

Nora Dobson

June 16, 2013 3:23 PM
It was a well known fact the pureblood women of Nora's social status did not work and that was why she had previously not volunteered to be a library helper. Yet, she'd still gotten prefect. Still, there was still Head Girl, and the Aladren wanted it. She didn't need it for a resume or anything, all she was going to do when she graduated was marry Nye, pop out babies, and throw parties, like most society pureblood women, which did not sound that fulfilling, though Nora was sure she'd have leisure time to pursue her interests in things like psychology. Maybe she'd join a group that shared academic papers on topics she was interested in, even if she couldn't write any, they'd still be fun to read.

But to her, Head Girl was just...important. She wanted to shine, to achieve. Not to mention family honor. The last time a relative of hers had gotten Head Student was Uncle Hugo's great-granddaughter Melora and that was fifteen years ago! It was ridiculous and made the entire family look bad. Like they were less respectable and Nora wanted to bring them back a little more honor. Of course, it could have been just a prejudice against powerful pureblood families achieving anything-there hadn't been many Careys that had been Head Students as far as she knew either-and a prevention of nepotism now given one of her relatives was the Groundskeeper. Or a giant rude gesture to Great Great Grandfather to show him he wasn't in control of everything the way he liked to think.

If it was that they were prejudiced against the elite pureblood students, well then that wasn't any better than if they'd been so against Muggleborns. Those of Nora's social class and bloodlines should be able to show that they had merit and qualities that made them deserving of awards too! Some of them did and were, herself included. (Of course, she was prefect and so had been Kaylie, Pippa and Nina, which was something. Still, she just wanted more.)

It probably didn't help that most of her relatives did not seem especially ambitious either, thinking they were important already just because of their family names-which was admittedly true-and that they didn't need to be more. They felt no need to achieve greater things, because their ancestors had done that for them. They just didn't care . Her own sister's main ambition was to be a trophy wife. Her female cousins didn't seem to mind just getting betrothed and being socialites.

Nora approached the sign up sheet, scanning it. "Prior experience will be considered for the role of Monitor".... Oh that was not good. She'd never done this before and she was not about to defer to people younger than her just because they had-and looking down the list of others signed up, there were a fair few of the sort on there. A bunch of Evan's overly ambitious yearmates who felt the need to do absolutely everything. Honestly, Alicia Bauer and Waverly Canterbury probably needed to overcome their lack of bloodlines by overachieving and being the center of attention. She wasn't sure what Thad Pierce's excuse was. He was his family's heir, he didn't need anything, unless it was to overcompensate for the behavior of his relatives. Nora's were merely lacking in ambition, his were downright embarrassing. He had a disowned female relative of some sort who was the school Quidditch Coach , even if she was the Deputy Headmistress too, and one of the clones twins played. And Derry had been disowned or disinherited or something. Her relatives had nothing to overcome, they had the bloodlines and weren't mired in constant scandal.

However, when she read what they'd actually put after their names she whispered to herself. "You have got to be kidding me." Especially Thad putting down himself as a substitute librarian . Yeah, he was going to have so much time for that with Quidditch and it being his CATS year. Really, had she not been tad bit annoyed by the lot, she'd have found them psychologically fascinating.

And the final people were three students she thought were firsties-she'd have to ask Portia to be sure-and Waverly's two overly hyper lackeys. This was going to be such fun.

For a second, Nora considered changing her mind about this whole thing, if that was what she had to work with, but she did want Head Girl and wrote her name on the list. Nora Dobson, Library Monitor . And even if she wasn't a monitor she certainly wasn't going to allow them to boss her around.

Alicia Bauer

June 22, 2013 3:06 PM
Alicia had not been surprised when, only two hours after breaking cover and joining her friends in claiming the willingness, ability, and right to do more in the library than she had as a mere monitor the year before, she had been nearly overwhelmed with nerves, sure the whole lot of them were in for the sort of notes she had heard some of the Quidditch players got last year and that she, more than the others, would never politically recover from it. That they would block her from being Head Girl and then screw up her college applications just for spite, leaving her to a miserable, if probably brief, existence living with her mother after school.

Intellectually, she knew the Powers That Were would probably stop at the Head Girl bit, since having her get into a good school without having actually accomplished anything up to that point after she left them would reflect well, even better than her doing so with accomplishments would, on them, too, but fear had a talent for showing her how her whole life could become a waste because of one moment of presumption. She had kept going about her business cheerfully, but had wanted nothing more than to go hide under her bed. It had been awful.

In light of all that, she was proud of herself for making it two days before she decided she had to alter the damn thing or suffer at least significant public humiliation as a result. It might not have been the smartest move, waiting like that, but at least it showed some backbone.

As she scurried back to the list, she scowled, both for its increased length – minions were good, but this many meant it was going to be an effort to keep Waverly or one of the others outside her group from gathering little power bases of their own – and just at the situation. Hastily, she added onto the end of her original sign-up (Displays, assistant scheduling, checking over things, events)

That last part was squished in, her handwriting becoming cramped three words from the end to make it fit onto the amount of line she had left. She scowled at that, too, before she forced her face back into a charming smile, that of someone who had corrected a small misunderstanding before it could even happen, and put up another notice, near the sign-up sheet:

Library Tour

First years: Feeling a little lost in the Sonora library? Help is here! An introduction to the library will be held on [Date], the second Saturday of term, at 11:00 a.m. See where to find books and papers for your classes, for your own enjoyment, and any other purpose you can think of! See you there!

Once she had satisfied herself, again, that it would do, Alicia went to the front desk to start signing the stack of messages she had with her, which had similar contents to her sign but also had her name on them. Really, she was doing it this way because she didn’t know how to post things to all the common rooms and didn’t know anyone in Pecari or Teppenpaw well enough to feel comfortable asking, but she hoped the appearance would be one of intimacy, that the first years would think this fifth year girl really cared about them individually and whether or not they passed Potions. That was, after all, how she worked best, on an individual, or better yet, small-group, level. She just wished she could have gotten her hands on all their names instead of just figuring out the number of them.

After she finished the signatures, she wasn’t sure what she should do first: run to find Thad and Henny, to ask for their backup on the day in question, or run to the Potions section to see if she could find the directions for the liquid luck potion she had read about so she could determine if it was as difficult as they said and if she could possibly make some. Because she felt the need for any extra luck she could get right now.
