Waiting for Josie by Addison Thornton

Addison was terrified. More terrified than ever, in fact. She had grown wider around the middle, even trying her best to keep what she and Josephine had spoken about in mind. She had started eating less, but it didn’t seem to be helping at all with her weight.

Josephine seemed to have become her best friend as the year progressed, and she only hoped it stayed that way. There was something about actually having a friend that made the fifth year actually feel better about herself… It was an odd feeling for the girl, but she liked it. She liked it a lot, and suddenly felt that everything could and would be okay again. Maybe this new friendship was just what she needed to get on the road again to being the girl she wanted to be?

With a bunch of books in hand, Addison made her way to the Library for her study meeting with Josephine for the CAT’s Exams. She knew that she was worried about the tests, and could only guess that her friend was too. Addi couldn’t say for sure, as she hadn’t heard Josie say anything to her about it. Addi wasn’t even sure if Josie knew that she was worried about it. It just hadn’t been anything the pair had talked about, even in their study sessions. They kept their conversations mostly to studies and about how they were going to be helping each other get and stay healthy.

Addi walked into the Library, glanced around to see if Josie had gotten their first this time, but when she didn‘t see her there yet, Addi sat down at their normal table and pulled out her Care of Magical Creatures book. Rereading the book from the front, she took notes on what she thought was going to be important so she’d have it to read over again later on. She read as she waited for Josie to join her.

A tap on her shoulder made her jump about three feet into the air and her book clattered to a thud on the floor under the table. “OH!” she said, in surprise as she looked up to see Josephine standing there beside her.

I have arrived! by Josephine Owen

Josephine made her way quietly into the library. She always believed in following the rules when she could understand the need for them (conversely, she always believed in breaking the rules when they were pointless), and it was perfectly understandable to ask for silence in a place of study. Unfortunately, Addison was apparently not wholly prepared for Josephine to arrive at that precise moment, and Josephine's hand on her shoulder made the poor Teppenpaw girl jump.

"I'm sorry," Jospehine said at once, stiffling a laugh as she bent down to pick up the book. She wrinkled her nose at the cover before passing it back to Addison. "I don't think I'll continue studying magical creatures next year," she admitted, sitting in the vacant chair next to her friend. "I'm not even sure I'll get an 'O' in my exams," she added, rummaging around in her back for her quill and notes. It was only when she had all her materials that she looked up at her friend and smiled. Her expression only faltered when she sensed that her companion wasn't perhaps as cheerful as she was. She could have been wrong, of course, but she perceived a hint of lacklustre about Addison's appearance. In fact, that wasn't just true of this particular occasion; despite their agreements to each other to eat well and exercise - an endeavour which seemed to be having some beneficial effects on Josephine's ability to button her shirts and jeans - Addison looked, well, bigger, if anything. Josephine didn't want to comment on it, as even though they'd grown close, she didn't want to offend the Teppenpaw girl.

"So, how's it going?" she finally said, presenting an opportunity for Addison to disclose any problems she might be having if that's what she chose to do, or to avoid any confrontational topics if that was more preferable. For Josephine's part, she would be equally happy to provide a listening each and shoulder to cry on as she would to study. She had done as much preparation for the exams as she had planned, which was less than some, but more than others - even with Arthur Carey in her yeargroup, Josephine was relatively confident she was among the smartest overall, if not in every individual subject. As well as studying, she had spent her time since midterm dancing and exercising in MARS to burn off her extra calories, and had reduced her overall food intake, too. At first it hard been hard, but knowing that Addison was doing it, too, had made it easier, and once her clothes began to fit better, and Josephine noticed a small but slight change in her reflection then she had been spurred on with her challenge. She had also taken to wearing a little eyeliner form time to time, and she liked the way it made her eyes stand out. She was wearing just a hint of the make-up just now - she didn't need to weaqr it all the time, and the library was hardly the centre of social gatherings.

Thank goodness for that! by Addi

“It's okay, it isn't your fault, not really. I think I was just really trying to focus on this paragraph...” Addi said, in response to Josephine's apology. Thankfully Addi hadn't noticed Josie's stifled laugh, instead she saw that her friend bent down to pick up the dropped book.

"You're not going to continue in Care of Magical Creatures?” Addi semi-repeated what her friend said as her heart thudded inside her chest. She was worried about that, mostly because she didn't want to honestly be in any classes without her friends, and not for nothing, she knew that Josephine was really her only one... Even her sisters had stayed away for the most part. Addi knew it was because she made them all tired with the way she'd been lately, and she'd been trying to be better. She had been slightly, thanks to Josie, but without her she'd be worse off than ever before. Even Addison knew that.

Josie looked in her backpack and pulled out her quill and notes before smiling back up at Addi. The Teppenpaw had done better thanks to her friend, but that didn't mean she was perfect in any sense of the word. Sure, she'd been eating much less, but that didn't mean that her body changed for the better either. In fact, she felt like she'd been even getting bigger than she was!

“How's it going?” Addi repeated softly as she glanced down at herself and back up at Josie again. “Honestly Josephine, I'm doing what we said we'd do, eating less and I'm walking... a lot. But it doesn't seem to be helping... I know the CATS are coming sooner than ever, and maybe that has something to do with it, but I just don't know...” Addi said, getting softer and softer with each word. Tears threatened to fall from her eyes, but she was determined not to let them. Along with the eating better and exercising, Addi was making it a point not to cry (at least in public) nearly as much as she used to. Yes, the CATS were stressful for her, but it wasn't good nor healthy for her to worry as much as she was.

“What if all this studying and healthy eating and exercising doesn't work? What if I fail the tests and like...” she stopped talking altogether and just looked at Josephine, biting her bottom lip.
