Wishful thinking (Tag: Adam) by Talen Dupree

Okay, this was it. This was the year that he was going to actually talk to him. He had wanted to ever since the Ball, but he had felt too shy to actually do so. Now that his crush was going to graduate this year, he knew that it was now or never. With this in mind, Talen had taken extra care in his preparations this morning. His dark hair lay in soft, glistening curls around his face. He had put on his very best casual robes, which he had first made sure contained no wrinkles and then had gone over very carefully to ensure there was no lint. His shoes were shined to a tee and in his pocket were some preplanned subjects that he could talk about.

Now, all he had to do was ‘accidentally’ run into the other boy, which was the tricky part. There was no way to tell exactly where Adam would be at any given time and therefore, no way to determine when he could do such a thing. He rather disliked not having a fully set plan, but one could only work with what one was given. Thus, his plan was to hang out in the library every single Saturday pretending to study until the moment came. This was going to be the first Saturday and he would go every Saturday until the end of the year if he had to. And if all that failed. Plan B. Corner him before getting on the wagons to leave for the year and confess all.

Hopefully, however, it didn’t come to that, so with hope in his heart, he sat at one of the library tables with piles of unnecessary books around him. He took unnecessary notes on his parchment in order to look busy. After all, he had to at least look like he had a reason to be in the library. He was worried that if it didn’t appear that he had a reason to be there, he would end up just telling Adam the real reason why he was there, how much he simply adored all the little things that he saw from the boy from his far away admiring. No, it was no way to begin a conversation, not one that he hoped would lead anywhere at any rate. Oh, how he hoped!

And sometimes dreams really did come true as he saw the object of his affections walk into the library. A wistful smile crossed his lips. He looked so beautiful. A blush crept up his cheeks and he suddenly felt hot. Maybe he should wait to talk to someone like Adam. No, no, this was what he had been anticipating. He ran his hands quickly through his hair to make sure it still looked right before his light footing made its way in front of Adam. He cleared his throat a little before shyly looking at the boy. He felt star struck all over again. “Um, hello. I am Talen Dupree. You are Adam Brockert, right? I-uh…oh, here’s the book I was looking for.” He grabbed the book closest to where they were standing. “Have you ever read it?”

Someone actually wants to talk to me ? by Adam Brockert

One more year. One more of year of this crap and then Adam could say goodbye to Sonora and all the people there who disliked him forever (aside from Chelsea whom of course he was stuck with.) He actually had a calendar on which he had numbered each day until graduation and every night he crossed off another one. He was counting down to the day he could leave it all behind.

At which time, after summer vacation, Adam could go to college and meet a whole bunch of new people who would inevitably dislike him.

At least Talitha was back now. Adam was thrilled about this. He didn't consider the days until he graduated the amount of days left that he had with her at all, because he really hoped to keep in contact with her after. Ideally, as her boyfriend.

He sighed as he walked into the library. It was still a better place most of the time than Crotalus. Just because Talitha was back now didn't mean Adam had much to say to anyone else.

“Um, hello. I am Talen Dupree. You are Adam Brockert, right? I-uh…oh, here’s the book I was looking for.”

Adam blinked twice. It was always surprising when nearly anyone talked to him, especially someone he didn't know. Talen talking to him wasn't quite as shocking as Elly as Talen wasn't part of Saul's popular clique but it was more surprising than Afton, who was a Teppenpaw and a Transfer Who Didn't Know Any Better.

"Um, yeah" He couldn't imagine why Talen would know his name. They weren't in the same year or house and Adam wasn't a prefect or anyone considered important in school. It was quite possible Talen had heard of him from one of his cousins. Talen was related to both Devian and that boy . He probably also had class with Chelsea.

None of which possibly could have left Talen with a favorable impression of Adam. Unless of course, the younger boy didn't happen to like his cousins or Chelsea much, which would be common ground between them.

Still, the Crotalus was trained to be polite and really, he had nothing against Talen. Adam didn't even really know him. "It's nice to meet you," he replied, offering him his hand to shake, as was the correct protocol, which Adam had better start practicing, especially given Talen was a member of an "important pureblood family" and seemed more proper than average Pecari. In fact, looking at him, Adam couldn't imagine how the younger boy had gotten placed there.

He looked at the book Talen had picked up, one on the different types of woods that could be used in Runes and what kind of magic they had. "Yes, actually. It's pretty good." Adam had actually read it more than once "Are you taking Ancient Runes as an independent study?" Adam was himself.

Of course I do! by Talen

Melting began to commence. Not only was Talen getting to talk to Adam, but also he was getting to touch him. Granted, it was merely a handshake, yet if he died at this moment, he would have died happy. He had to fight very hard to keep an ear-to-ear grin from forming across his face and making him look like some maniac. It was so hard for the boy had never thought he would even get to do this. He had thought it would have been more on the last day of school where he would just sort of end up blurting out to Adam that he liked him.

Though, that was a bit of a coward’s way since there were really no repercussions to something like that. There were also no possibilities, which had finally convinced him to actually talk to the other boy. He had never expected it would be going this well. Of course, he should actually know what he was talking about. He glanced down to read the title of the book that was in his hands. He just prayed that it was something he could have a conversation about or at least fake one about. That’s what he got for choosing a random book.

He breathed a sigh of relief. Ancient Runes. He could talk about that. “I did take the class for the last couple years, but I’m not sure about doing an independent study. I mean it’s not that I mind doing work by myself.” He scratched at his head. He was beginning to ramble. “I play the piano by myself.” That caused him to stop. Had he really just said that? How could he have said that? Now, he just stood staring at Adam like a fish out of water. What would one of the greats of love do? How could he save the situation?

“I…uh…uh…” he stammered as he began grasping at straws. What could he possibly say? All he wanted to do was go pound his head against some wall for his complete idiocy. Everything in the pureblood world (and really that which wasn’t) was based on first impressions. If he blew it now, then what would he have? There was only one thing to do. Suck it up and try again. Very slowly, he forced out appropriate questions, “Are you taking any independent study? You seem like a really smart person, so I’m sure you wouldn’t have any trouble.” Good until he blushed.

*is surprised* by Adam

Adam nodded when Talen began to speak. "That's okay, I much prefer to do work on my own myself usually." Of course, a large part of this had to do with the fact that most of his class and the one below his didn't seem to like him much and the people who did like him were either too far below him year-wise, like Talitha, or did not take the same classes he did. There was also often no point in making him work with someone who didn't even want to be around him when Adam could do the assignment just fine by himself. The only thing he could think of where someone would need a partner for a lesson was in Defense when you were practicing protecting yourself from hexes and whatnot and Adam wasn't taking it. There had been no way he was giving someone good enough to be in a post-CATS DADA class the chance to hex him in someway.

"You play the piano?" Adam wondered briefly why Talen had not done that in the concert last year. Then he remembered that Talen was in Pecari and Chelsea complaining that the prefects, particularily Saul, were idiots for basically telling her friend-Chelsea being friends with a muggleborn Pecari was an irony not lost on Adam-that she wasn't going to get the solo before she'd ever even tried out. So with that thought, it wasn't really that surprising that Talen hadn't after all.

Though, that Talen was interested in talking to him at all was. "I don't play an instrument myself. I'm...more artistic." Here Adam blushed. He still wasn't good at conversation, would never be. He was particularily good at wood work when it came to art. Adam was actually considering majoring in it next year when he went to college. Marshall had mentioned (during a drunken rant about the lack of Transfiguration classes) that there was no specific wand-making major.

"Though music is artistic too, but I meant.." Yeah, conversation wasn't his art form. Adam noticed Talen seemed to be stammering over his words some too, but wasn't going to call attention to it, because he could empathize. Perhaps that was why Talen wanted to speak to him, he was more introverted like Adam and recognized him as someone he'd be more comfortable talking to.

Which made Adam wonder, yet again, how Talen had ever gotten into Pecari.

The next thing Talen said caught Adam completely off guard.

“Are you taking any independent study? You seem like a really smart person, so I’m sure you wouldn’t have any trouble.”

He blushed a bit. Adam wasn't used to compliments, especially here at school, especially for being smart, one of the few things he did have. Either people didn't care about it or they didn't see him as so because he wasn't in Aladren, something that now he was incredibly grateful for. "Um, thanks." Adam replied. "Yes, I'm uh, taking Ancient Runes even though its not a regular class now." He thought he was one of the only two taking it now, Geoff Layne being the other, but it wasn't as if they ever had to work together. It was sort of Adam's favorite because of the subject matter. He liked Transfiguration too, but that had more to do with the fact that they were rarely forced to work in pairs or groups.

Is that a good thing? by Talen

“It is my instrument of choice. Though, I can play mostly anything. The music just speaks to me,” Talen said in such a matter of fact way that there was no room left to sound like he was boasting about such a thing. He didn’t even think that there was anything special about being so musically gifted. He merely understood it to be something he enjoyed and assumed most people could do the same thing if they wanted to, but then he didn’t pay attention to most people. Actually, he avoided most people merely because he felt like an outsider when among them. It was a feeling that left him when he was playing the piano.

“It is all right,” Talen reassured the older boy, daring to touch an arm. “I know what you meant. What is your realm of artistic? I mean what is your medium?” He sincerely hoped that Adam didn’t say painting or sculpting. They were just so incredibly messy and one of the qualities that he had placed on Adam was that he wasn’t a messy person. He would be disappointed to learn otherwise, but would still continue the conversation, as it was interesting to get how another felt about their work. “Does it speak to you? Sometimes, I feel like the music is playing me rather than the other way around.”

Talen was pleased to know that Adam was more intelligent than he had originally anticipated. One had to be to be able to take a RATS level class as an independent study. “What is your favorite rune? Mine is Algiz. I think it is because it is a protection rune.” He often felt that he needed to be protected, protected from his classmates, protected from his family, protected from the world. He had asked for a new runes set over the summer and he had gotten it, but it seemed a bit useless now. “I was thinking of having that rune from my set turned into a necklace that I could wear. You know so I am always protected.”

He was rambling again, but he couldn’t seem to help himself. Adam just mad him so nervous. He really wished that he were more daring. If he was, then he would stop his ramblings by doing what he really wanted to do. He wanted to take the chance. He wanted to kiss Adam, but he wasn’t a brave boy. He wasn’t anything really or at least he didn’t view himself to be anything, because he didn’t conform to the rest of the school’s standards, which were really overrated. Maybe. “How come you are not outside with…most people?” He blushed in embarrassment after saying that for Adam probably had his reasons for not joining his friends.

This time, yes. by Adam

"That's pretty neat." Adam replied. He had never even tried to play an instrument. He really didn't think he'd be that great at it and Adam rarely tried new things because he didn't want to make a fool out of himself. He was glad though, that Talen didn't seem to be bragging about it. It tended to make Adam feel even worse about himself when someone rubbed it in his face that they were better than him. He really didn't need that.

"Well, I mostly work with wood. I want to make wands someday." Adam responded. Few people knew this as he rarely spoke to anyone, especially about his hopes and dreams. It would hurt him too much if someone belittled them, even though Adam saw it as a fairly practical thing. It wasn't as if he wanted to be some "I guess that isn't really art for arts' sake though. I mean, wands are something that all witches and wizards use." He thought for a moment. "I guess it does. Like something breaking out of a block of wood. Usually I carve animals or wand forms. Not that they work without the core."

Adam considered what Talen said. "I guess Algiz is a pretty good one." He wondered who exactly the younger boy needed protection from. Probably his cousin or housemates, Adam thought a bit cynically. He had often felt the need for protection himself, knowing that most people at Sonora didn't like him very much. Adam was still pretty often worried they'd be mean to him since he didn't fit in. He couldn't. Adam just wasn't like them.

He turned red. "I um, guess I just prefer the library. I've uh, never been very outdoorsy. I'd rather read then like, play Quidditch or something." Adam realized that he probably should not have said that. People seemed to think something was wrong with you if you didn't like Quidditch or being active outdoors.
