Going after a book (wotw) by Zack Dill

Zack had been trying to get a book on a particular subject for some time now but had been repeatedly unsuccessful. Today, he intended to try a different strategy. He started several aisles away, skulking about in the section of ancient plays and literature written by people who were so long dead their works were now classified as historical instead of fiction. He spied on the target shelf through the area between the tops of one row of plays and the bottom of the next shelf of them.

The shelf in question sat there quietly, innocently, still unaware of Zack's interest. Zack was not fooled. He knew the nature of that shelf and it was no innocent. The utmost care must be taken if he wanted that book.

Going the long way around so as not to reveal himself to the target shelf of books, Zack moved one bookcase closer, crouching down among some shelves about architecture. One title (How to Charm Your Home to Defy Physics) caught his attention, but he made a mental note come back to it later. Right now, he was after a different kind of information.

He moved slowly and carefully around three more bookcases so that now he was at the far end of the same row as the shelf he wanted. He pretended to be interested in the books beside him, but, frankly, the history of theater was probably the last thing he cared about. He stayed to the shadows as much as possible, hoping that if he could skulk well enough he could approach the shelf without it seeing him.

Closer. He was almost there. He could make out the titles on the spines. In just another moment, he'd have a book in hand and he'd be able to flee to research the topic at hand with leisure. Another step nearer. Just one more and he'd be able to touch . . . no!

The music started. He still wasn't sure which of the books was the offender. He wasn't even sure if it was the same one every time. But the notes were loud in the quiet library and Zack retreated quickly, his heart pounding in his panicked flight, defeated in his quest once more. The sound stopped abruptly once he was out of sight. Zack leaned against a bookcase three rows away and held his hand over his wildly beating heart. That had been too close.

Today was not going to be the day he would teach himself how to dance.

Obviously you're not trying hard enough by Jennifer Zucchero

Strange happenings in the library were not entirely unexpected when said library was located in a school of witchcraft and wizardry and thus filled with magic-related books. Jennifer Zucchero had never had any of the possible bizarre occurrences happen to her personally, but everyone had a associate’s brother’s girlfriend’s uncle who had gotten a hand bitten off by a book, or something of the like. She didn’t particularly mind her lack of experience in the area, though. One preferred one’s books unbloodied, after all, whenever remotely possible.

However, it appeared that today was the day her perfect track record was to be brought to an unfortunate and untimely end, though at least it happened in a, she assumed, complete non-violent fashion. However, she couldn’t be entirely sure. One moment, she’d been innocently sitting at a table trying to finish up one of the last stories in her Ancient Runes project, and then, out of nowhere, there had been a sudden burst of…music?

Jennifer knew that there were musicians at Sonora—her boyfriend’s sister was one of them, after all. However, it didn’t seem likely that any of them would be practicing in the middle of a library, nor that anyone would be attempting some kind of musical charm in the middle of a place filled with studying students. It would not surprise her in the slightest if some vigilante Aladren stabbed any person that stupid with a freshly sharpened quill, or something equally painful and academic. Therefore, either she’d hear a pained scream in a second, or it was a book (she supposed there could be other options, but none came to mind).

She had stood up to go find the source and had taken a few steps away from her table when it suddenly stopped. Now, there was a perfect opportunity to go back to diligently working, but she’d been doing that for a while already. Besides, her curiosity had been set off now. She had to know.

The fact that she had no clue where to begin was something that didn’t need to be focused on. There had been a general direction, and that was all that was really important. However, almost as soon as she entered the stacks she ran into Zack Dill, who looked…unwell, to say the least. She and Zack weren’t particularly close friends, but they were in enough classes together to be able to strike up conversation, or so she thought. “Hey, Zack, any idea what that music was from?”

Clearly by Zack Dill

Zack looked up with an unconsciously guilty look from his half-collapsed position against the bookshelf when the questioning voice made it clear he was no longer unobserved. As what she had asked percolated past the still slightly panicked fog in his brain, his guilty conscious immediately assumed she suspected him of complicity in release of the loud music in the quiet library. This was, after all, exactly the situation that had sent him into a panic in the first place. Fortunately, though, Jennifer was only a fellow sixth year and not even a prefect, so he probably wasn't about to lose points or get thrown out.

If she'd been interrupted doing something important for one of her classes, though, he wasn't going going to put some other kind of retaliation past her, though. Great Maker knew Zack would have been upset. He had two options at this point. Either he could beg for mercy (but Jennifer was a Quidditch Captain, and judging by Anne, Zack wasn't certain how merciful that breed was), or he could try to lie his way free of blame.

Okay. Lying was an art. He straightened up to his full four feet and eleven and three quarters inches of height. He brushed his slightly shaggy dark hair out of his eyes and was grateful he was neither out of breath nor sweating or this would be over before it started. "It wasn't me, I swear," he forsweared himself in a slightly too desperate sounding whisper.

Because he couldn't admit not knowing the answer to something though, he pointed an almost steady finger back toward where the offending shelf lurked, three rows away. "But the noise came from over there. That's the music and dance section. Someone probably got too close."

And you call yourself an Aladren (Alderaan) by Jennifer

Though she knew it was incredibly rude, Jennifer couldn't help but stare at Zack for a few moments after he answered her. He just seemed so...strange right now. Well, stranger than usual. She couldn't deny that Zack Dill had always appeared one of the most intelligent people she'd ever met. However, true genius and norallcy were rarely, if ever, combined successfully, and as a rule, the boy before her was no exception. But the ridiculously nervous persona wasn't a side she'd seen before.

"That would make sense," she reploied evenly, even as she studied him. "Thought it might be something like that but," she shrugged, "I was curious, and needed a break from ancient runes anyway." Taking a slight pause, she assessed her companion once more, and then continued. "Don't take this the wrong way but--are you alright? You seem a bit...off."

It actually wouldn't have been too much of a challenge to figure out what had happened; his immediate declaration of innocence and his jittery behavior were certainly excellent indicators. However, Jennifer brusehed aside that thought since, even with that evidence, it didn't seem like it was enough to make behave like he currently was. It wasn't like almost anyone couldn't have done whatever the person who had set the book of f had by accident, so there seemed little cause for fuilt or worry about something as trivial as that in her mind. Something had to be wrong. \r\n\r\n

*is shamed* (wotw) by Zack Dill

He seemed . . . off. Oh, God. That was what his neighbors said about him when they were asking his parents why they left an obviously mentally unstable person alone in the apartment. Just because he told them, once, about the aliens that attacked Sonora, because he thought they should know so that they could protect themselves if the next wave of invasion attacked Detroit, everyone in the housing complex thought he was completely delusional.

Zack hadn't even mentioned aliens today. He was careful about that, now. The cover-up conspiracy was much larger than he'd originally taken it for and he didn't want to be disappeared like Headmistress Marnett had. Fortunately, so far, he seemed to have come across as an overly imaginative kid, so no black vans had grabbed him yet.

Still, he shifted his weight nervously, wrung his hands, and looked about the library to make sure nobody else was paying him and Jennifer any mind. "I'm fine," he lied. "I was just startled by the noise, too," he told her. That part was even mostly the truth. He'd been trying so hard not to let it go off.

If he'd left it there, he might have even come across as honest, but he shook his head and denied, "I swear, I wasn't thinking it was the aliens at all." Which he hadn't been, until Jennifer brought them up. But now he could see how the Snitches' insidious trickery could be behind the magical tomes knowing exactly when to start blaring out sound to best scare the living daylights out of him. They were fond of pranks like that.

Not crazy, merely misunderstood by Jennifer

So, apparently it did make a difference that she hadn’t spoken to Zack much before, because obviously there was some big inside joke she’d missed. At least, she thought it was some sort of inside joke. The aliens comment really didn’t make sense otherwise. Honestly, he couldn’t be serious. Yes, he was slightly strange sometimes, but that was more than strange.

Making a mental note to ask Stephen about what ‘aliens’ stood for, since she was pretty sure the two boys were friends, and Stephen wouldn’t laugh at her if it was something really obvious that she’d completely missed. Right now, though, she really had no clue about what to say to him now. Escape seemed the best option. “Alright. Well, if you’re sure you’re okay, I’ll be heading back to the rapture of more homework. See you around.” And with that, she turned around and headed back over to her books, valiantly resisting the urge to look back over her shoulder. Zack Dill was apparently very much an acquired taste.
