Buying her dress and shoes over winter break had forced Eavan to realize that she was very bad a t being a girl. She never wore dresses or skirts and purposely wore her robes slightly baggy to hide her boyish figure. Her hair was always tied back in a braid or ponytail and she never once wore make-up in her entire life. And this suited her fine.
But now, with the dance looming so near, being girlie seemed to be a must and with no one to tell how to be a girl Eavan, sought information from the library. She now sat at a table situated in a patch of sunlight flipping through old copies of Teen Witch that the library had stacked in the back.
She had a quill, ink, and a piece of parchment that she was writing useful information on. Her list included various spells on charming hair to be straight or curly, make-up tips(though she had none) and a recipe for a custom Make-Your_Own Perfume potion that she found very intriguing.
She had just gone through her third issue and was looking at the cover of the fourth curiously when someone sat down at the table with her.
"Hi!" Then she realized it was probably a bit weird that Eavan Valentine was surrounded by issues of Teen Witch.
"They're for the dance," she said sheepishly.

Normally, Danae avoided the library. Not because she didn’t enjoy books, but because Devian usually spent most of his time in this particular area of the school. Unfortunately, it wasn’t always avoidable, such as today, when she had to look up information for her Potions homework.
Upon entering the library, she saw a familiar head sitting at a table. Making her way over, she glanced curiously at the magazines that surrounded her friend, as she slung her bag into the next chair and sat down.
“Hi,” Danae replied with a grin. Her head tilted to one side, the loose hair going with it. She had never pegged Eavan as someone that cared about this sort of stuff. It was more of the type of stuff she was interested in. Pointing at the one that mentioned about making one’s hair curly or straight, she said, “There are better charms than the ones they listed.”
If anyone could have sat down next to Eavan at that moment, she would have chosen Danae, so when it turned out that Danae actually had sat next to her, Eavan's smile widened considerably. Danae was the girl Eavan would never be. Where Eavan had no idea what half the things were in the magazine, she was sure that Danae would.
And Eavan was proven right when Danae pointed out that there were better charms than the ones she had written down. Eavan looked over her list and then back at Danae.
"Really? What kinds of charms?" Eavan asked as she crossed a bunch of spells off of the list she wrote. She never knew that were different grades of spell for this kind of thing. A curl was a curl, right? Apparently not...
Danae nodded solemnly. “That one is for thicker hair. If you use it, your hair will never forgive you. It’ll be poodle curly for weeks. Your hair is fine, so you’ll need a charm that compliments it. Are you planning on wearing your hair up or down? If you wear it up, you’ll probably want a tighter curl, but for down, I would go with a soft curl.”
She studied her friend for a moment, before continuing, “Your facial structure would work well with the soft curl. It’ll give you a certain…” She bit her lip, a little worried that she would offend, “Sweetness.”
Hurrying on, in case she had, she said, “I would kill to be able to pull off that type of look.” Eavan already had that look, but the hair and any makeup she wore would enhance it, making the male population take notice. It was something about their need to take care of those that appeared innocent.
Eavan made a face at the thought of her hair being akin to a poodle's. It wouldn't look good at all. She sat silently while Danae studied her face and finally told her that she'd look best with soft curls.
"Sweetness?" Eavan echoed back. Most girls would rather be hot or sexy when getting ready for dance, but Eavan probably couldn't pull those adjectives off. And sweet was better than anything Eavan was currently. She smiled at Danae when she said she's kill to look sweet.
"Really? You'd rather be sweet than pretty?" Eavan said with a slight smile. She considered Danae to be pretty and since she had gotten a date on the first day back, boys seemed to think so too.
"Could you help me get ready for the dance?" Eavan asked. If anyone could help her, it's be her best friend.
Danae nodded when asked if she would rather be sweet over being pretty. She didn’t view herself as either, but if she picked one that she wanted, it would be sweet. “It was in an article I read about boys. It said about how boys were drawn more to sweet than pretty and tended to stick longer with that type of girl.”
At the mention of helping Eavan get ready for the dance, Danae’s eyes lit up. “I’d love too! So, do you want to do your hair like I suggested? What about glamour charms? I think something that gave your face a light glow would be nice. It would give you sort of an ethereal look.” In her excitement, the normally quiet Danae was talking a mile a minute.
At the thought of what one was going to do, she paused suddenly and sighed. She really wished her hair were still long, because then she would have so many options on what to do with it. Instead, she was rather limited on styles. Curls were definitely out for her. They never looked quite right. Maybe she should brush it back and add a hair accessory? She took one of the magazines lying on the table to browse through, hoping to be inspired.
Eavan stared at the magazine in front of her thoughtfully. Was it true that boys liked sweet better? She thought of Earl and the girls he seemed to like. They were all pretty, among their other qualities, but she wouldn't have characterize any of them as sweet.
She looked up and tried to suppress her grin when she saw how excited Danae was to help her. She had no idea what to do with herself for the dance. The only glamor charms she'd ever done was to hide a zit and the only thing she'd ever done to her hair was brush it. "Um, whatever you think is best. I have no idea what would look good on me." Eavan smiled at her own lack of knowledge.
"So...curls and a 'glow' for me? And what about you? Do you get an ethereal glow too? Oh, and did you get your dress yet? Didn't you say it was going to be red?"
Danae grinned back at her. “We can meet earlier in the day to do the charms, so we’ll just have to change into our dresses right before the dance. But yes, curls and a glow.” She made a silly face at her friend. She shook her head. “I can’t pull off the same type of glow. It’s your fair skin that allows for it.”
She nodded. She had gotten her dress yesterday. It was now hanging up in her closet, waiting to be worn. She was actually surprised. It wasn’t like the ones that she normally had to wear. “Wait until you see it. It’s red and shiny. It’s sleeveless and it’s cut to about here,” she said, indicating how low-cut it was, which wasn’t much since she was still young.
“It falls down around my knees.” When she turned around, it swirled around gently. It was very different from the little girl dresses she had to wear at family functions. It was very mature and she couldn’t wait to wear it.
"Oh please, I think you could pull off a glow any day," Eavan said emphatically, though she had no idea if Danae actually could pull off the 'glow'. Eavan had never like her fair skin. Not only was it not the best thing for places such as Los Angeles and Sonora, but everyone else around her neighborhood at home was tanned and could never seem to get that golden color onto her own skin.
But the description of Danae's dress, while outwardly Eavan sat there gushing over it, inwardly, she though of her own dress. Stevie had taken her shopping for the dress and shoes and had finally chosen a dress that was cut just a bit lower and a bit shorter than anything she was used to. And she had yet to master walking in anything heeled, though Stevie had insisted that Eavan buy those god-awful gold high heels.
Although Eavan had to admit that she looked nice, however uncomfortable she might be in the outfit.
"Your dress sounds so pretty, Danae. Josh is going to love it," Eavan smirked.
