My usual tricks by Elly Eriksson

It was one of the two times of the year that found Elly sitting in the library, an assortment of unusual book scattered around her place at the table, whilst she searched among them for a suitable midterm prank. However, today the books had been collected, but were thus far untouched, as Elly was re-reading a letter she’d received from her father that morning.

Hey Elly

I hope everything is going well at school. I’m really sorry to be writing his letter, sweetheart, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to see you over Christmas. I’m in a huge project in Hong Kong, and I just can’t get the time away. Will you ever forgive me?

On the plus side, your mother is visiting her family again; apparently they had so much fun at the end of the summer she’d going back to spend Christmas there. Which, of course, means you get to spend the entire two weeks with your grandmother. I hope that’s a suitable consolation prize.

So sorry again sweetheart, but I’ll try to book some decent amount of time off again for the summer.

Much love, Daddy xxx

It was so unfair! Elly did love her Grandma, it was true, and she would rather spend the holiday with her than with her own mother, but if truth be told she was upset that her father hadn’t managed to get time off to see her in one of only two times she was in London out of the whole year.

She knew his work was important, and she knew that the money he earned kept her family in London, and bought her things like Seekers’ gloves and an endless supply of new clothes (which Elly would gladly forgo except she still hadn’t stopped growing!). But still, she felt she would be happier living in a cheap flat instead of a nice house if it meant she got to see her Dad more.

Sighing heavily, Elly looked up from the letter as a shadow loomed over her. “Oh sorry,” she said, realising her books were taking up most of the table. She hurriedly gathered them closer in towards her. “Off in my own little world,” she added, smiling.

OOC: I should have put this post up earlier - it's aimed for about mid-November.
