Looking for old friends [Tag: Talitha] by Jaeven Dimitri

Firsties were fun, but Jae hadn’t seen any of his older friends this year. Or, he’d seen them, but he hadn’t really talked to them because he hadn’t been able to. His roommates were nice, but he wasn’t superfriends with them or anything like that. And Mika had gone away. Gwyn he hadn’t seen, but Talitha he had. And when he’d seen Talitha, she’s been uber-sad. Normally he would’ve gone and hugged her and asked what was wrong, but that had been in Charms. And there was no Professor McKindy in Charms. Instead, there was Super Scary Scientist Lady. She was like a villain from one of the comic books he and Nina had read over the summer, the Japanese ones that you read weird. He was still half-expecting her to grow cat ears or have madcoolscary powers to read his mind or something.

Needless to say, Jae hadn’t changed much over the summer. He still had the blonde dreadlocks and cheery personality that had been his trademark last year. Also unchanged was his love for animals, although both Todd, his puffskein, and Jenny, his cat, had grown too big to be comfortably carried around in his bag. However, he had been introduced to the strange new world of Almost Adolescence over the summer, courtesy of his best friend, Nina. Or ex best friend. Jae wasn’t really sure. Nina was definitely mad at him because he wasn’t allowed to tell her about Sonora. And she had also gotten A Boyfriend over the summer, and Jae was definitely not sure how he felt about that. On one hand, Riley was okay-nice. He wasn’t ubernice like some of Jae’s Sonora friends, and he didn’t go to magic school either. Riley was athletic, and a lot taller than Jae (who still stood at 4’5” going into his twelfth year of life) and he had red hair. But he also was someone that Nina liked more than Jae right now. It made Jae sad that he and Nina weren’t best friends any more. But because of that, he had spent a lot more time with Aunt Cheri over the summer volunteering at the humane society and they had almost convinced Aunt Marla to let them get a guinea pig.

So it was all very confusing and messed up. But that wasn’t why he was searching the library. He was searching for his friend Talitha, who was definitely still his friend, and definitely in need of copious amounts of Jae-hug-ness.

In and out of the library shelves, stopping once or twice to look at the moving pictures (which, after a year at magical school, were still the most madcoolawesomest bits and Jae’s favourite part), Jae looked for his friend. And finally, in the very, very, most backish back of the library, he found her. “Talitha!” he whispered, loudly and happily, then went to hug her. “You’ve been grumpy. Why have you been grumpy? Did you have a good summer? And a good birthday?”

Friend found by Talitha

Talitha was searching through the myriad of shelves for one book in particular. It a self help book entitled, When You Child is a Squib. She wanted to understand what it was like to for a magical family to discover that one of the kids had no magic. In her community, there were no Squibs that she knew of and she really wanted to understand why Brett felt the way her did. It was in the card catalogue, but it didn’t seem to be on the shelves.

She had been thinking that Oliver and Brett had similar problems. It was just that they handled it in different ways. Oliver’s family chose to live without magic and Brett’s, while from magic, couldn't use it. Oliver was proud of his abilities and wanted to learn all he could. Brett seemed frustrated with his and tried to fight against them. Talitha didn’t understand either, but she thought she could find some sort of answer in a book.

Suddenly arms were around her, squeezing the breath out of her. She giggled as quietly as she could while Jae stage whispered to her. She returned the hug with equal enthusiasm. Who in the world could be grumpy around such an awesomely wonderful person like Jae?

Surreptitiously, she touched her medicine bag to invoke her spirit guides. Owl loved books of course and usually guided her to the right ones. Fox could slink around and pretend to stalk Oscar. Squirrel immediately was up on Jae’s shoulders, playing with his dreadlocks and diamond stud. Squirrel adored Jae. Talitha wished Jae could see Squirrel. Maybe someday she would explain it to him.

“Hey, Jae!” Talitha said in her quiet library voice. In his usual rapid-fire speech, he’d asked her a bunch of questions at once. She replied to each question after he paused to draw breath in like fashion. “I know I’ve been moody and I’m sorry. I’ll try to do better, I promise. I had a great birthday. I rescued a baby owl on my Walk and its almost grown up now! You have to see it the next time I take it to the gardens to hunt!”

She took a deep breath. It was easy to adopt Jae’s speech pattern when he spoke to her. In fact, she felt like she had to just to keep up with him. His mind darted between subjects so fast!

“How are you doing?” She asked him. “Did you have a good summer? Did you get to ride your horse? Where are your cat and puffskein?”\n
