Muggle homework is too easy TAG: Raoul
by Hyana Kamiya
English. It was way too easy. Hyana wished her mother would send her harder things. Sure, she would have more school work at Sonora that would provide a challenge, but come on! Diagramming sentences? That was just too easy. Did Emiko think she was eight or something?
Still, it had to be done. She had to keep her mother happy, or else midterm would not be a happy one. She sat alone at a table in the library, copying down the first sentence:
The boy ran.
Easy. She drew a t chart on her paper. On the top left corner, she wrote boy. On the bottom left corner, she wrote the. On the top right corner, she wrote ran. Done. Gosh, this was way too easy. The next sentence was: The boy ran quickly. She sighed. She wasn’t stupid! She repeated the t chart process, and it looked exactly the same, except she wrote quickly on the bottom right corner.
Her black hair fell in her face as she leaned back a little. She hadn’t put it in a pony tail today. What a stupid thing to forget. Her bangs were in her eyes too. Soon they’d be too long to consider bangs. She’d need to talk to Caedence soon about pulling her hair back. There just had to be an effective way.
She worked some more for a while, finally getting to adding prepositions to her diagram. Exciting! But still too easy. She looked around the library. She could be reading one of these books right now. They’d probably be much more interesting than this at the moment. She could start writing down her experiences in her journal, like the firsties she had met. Or she could be making a better copy of the book she wrote for Fury! To give to Zack to show the first years.
Her eyes landed back on her work, and she sighed. After this she could do history, which would be fun. And for reading, she was assigned the first few scenes of Romeo and Juliet. Getting English done would be the best thing for her. She could still ignore her math. That was the subject Hyana didn’t understand.
A shadow was cast over her paper, and Hyana turned around. Someone was standing behind her, obviously observing her paper. She blushed a little. These things must’ve been why she won Biggest Brain in the yearbook. The person didn’t look familiar to her though, so maybe that didn’t matter.
“Hi.” she greeted the student in a quiet voice. “I’m not in your seat or something, am I? B-because I can move.”

Raoul was, despite the constant use of the language around him, starting to get lazy in his English. He was forgetting some words and had to use what his tutor called ‘context clues’ to figure out what the other people were saying. Every now and then he would let slip a malapropism such as, “Do you speak French? I’ve lived there my whole life and I speak it fluidly.” and other things. Small, but embarrassing. At least he didn’t slip up horribly, though none the less it was getting frustrating.
He wrote home to his father, using a school owl, to ask for him to have his tutor send him English books. In the meantime, he would try to read. After all, it would be easier to translate written words, as they were written down. He could read at his own pace. Maybe they would have books in a foreign language for him to read?
Besides, he missed sitting down and reading with his mother. She would help him to study his English, as she spoke the language beautifully. His father had a heavy accent which made it difficult to understand what he was saying in English. Being with books might make him feel a bit less homesick.
While he was looking at the spines of books with names he didn’t recognize, (such as hipogriph, or auror and other strange words he was sure had something to do with magic) he saw a pretty young Asian girl pouring over, what looked to be, a textbook. He quickly grabbed a book called Spells for the Rustier of us Magical Folk and walked over to her.
He frowned, mouthing the words on the paper. The boy ran quickly He thought for a moment before the words came to him. Le garçon a couru rapidement he thought. The boy ran he paused. Simple, take off the adverb and it becomes Le garçon a couru He grinned. Maybe he wasn’t losing his touch after all? But then again, this was with written words, and it is tougher to keep up the steady rhythm of a conversation.
“Hi. I’m not in your seat or something, am I? B-because I can move.”
Raoul gave a start when he realized that he had been hovering. “Oh no mademoiselle! Sil vous plait! I was being rude. Pardonez moi,” He said, holding up his hands. “I was just looking at your paper, translating.” He added.
He backed away a step, “It is your seat, mademoiselle, not mine. I just wanted to try my English, not stare. Pardonez moi, sil vous plait. Je m’appeles Raoul Delachenne. Oh no…” He hit his head. “Sutpide, stupide, stupide. My name is Raoul and that isn’t a verb, it is my name.” How lame was that? That isn’t a verb? His face began to glow red. “I… nice to meet you. I should go, should I not?” he stuttered.

Thank goodness. Hyana let out a sigh of relief. It was just a first year. It wasn’t like she had stolen Caedence’s seat, or Sierra’s. Both sounded absolutely terrifying at the moment. But she figured that it was alright for her to run into a first year. She didn’t feel completely stupid. Just a little.
He began to speak, and for a moment, she had trouble placing the accent. Or the language for that matter. He said he was translating…Hyana really didn’t want to feel stupid and ask what language he was speaking. It was really familiar! She raced through all of the languages she knew in her mind. Spanish, Japanese…oh, there was a book she read over the summer. What was it?
The Tale of Despereaux. That was it! He was French! Pardonez Moi, pardon me, sil vous plait, please. That was about as far as her knowledge went. Either way, Hyana was pretty proud of herself for figuring out the language. She tilted her head to one side curiously.
“I just wanted to try my English, not stare.” Try his English? So he was foreign! That also explained why he continued to slip up and speak in French. He introduced himself as Raoul, the not verb. She giggled, and moved her chair over, pointing at the empty seat.
“Well, Raoul, the not verb, there’s an empty seat right here. You don’t have to leave.” she said with a smile. “Do you mind if I call you Raoul for short?” She turned her gaze back to her paper. Translating it? Was he having trouble or something keeping up in English? She imagined how hard it would be trying to keep up in a conversation when she barely understood the language.
“I’m Hyana, by the way.” she said, somewhat shyly. “I’m a second year in Aladren.” Pushing her paper and textbook between the two, if he decided to sit down, she turned her eyes back to him, a shy smile on her face.
“Would you like me to teach you?” she asked. “The diagramming, I mean. It’s really easy, and I’m sure it could help you…you know…with your English.” She blushed a little. “I don’t mean that you seem like you’re having trouble. You just said that you were translating, and maybe I could help teach you this in English. It might help you translate easier or something.” She looked at her lap. She’d just shut up now and wait for his answer.

“Well, Raoul, the not verb, there’s an empty seat right here. You don’t have to leave.”
Raoul laughed lightly, unsure if her response to his poor introduction was relieving his embarrassment, or making it worse. He took the offered seat and listened to her talk. She introduced herself as a second year in Aladren. He almost cringed at the ‘h’ in her name. He hoped she wouldn’t mind him usually dropping his ‘he’s. That was the one thing that was a constant irritant to his tutor.
“Well, Eeana, if you would like to teach me these… diagrammings, I would be very happy. And there is no rudeness in saying I am having issues with my English. If these diagrammings can help, then I will try them.”
He grinned, “After all I doubt this will help much. Is rustier even a real English word? Would it not be ’more rusty‘? Ah what do I know? I give my tutor headaches from all the times when I mess up. Which is often. I prefer to just go back to speaking in French, and he gets annoyed. I guess it must be just like if you say in French class ‘le pie’. Just adding ‘le’ to the beginning of a word or making it sound French doesn’t make it a French word. So saying a French word without an accent doesn’t make it English, does it?”
He grinned at her. She seemed so shy. Maybe they could be friends? He was shy, when someone didn’t come up to him and talk. He hated making a fool of himself, so he avoided talking all together usually.
“So, these diagrammings, how do you do them?” He asked peering at her paper perplexedly. \n

Hyana was really glad that he decided to stay. Really, really glad. To be honest, she didn't want to be alone much out of her commons. Alexis Ashwood was around, and that girl seemed to have it out for her. Hyana wasn't sure why. It had something to do with Josiah, and the fact that she was muggleborn. Either way, it was nice to attempt to make new friends.
She gave a small smile at how he said her name. Eeana. It was better than people trying to call her Hyana-Banana or something like that. In fact, it was kind of cute. She liked it. She nodded as he spoke.
"I'm positive that the diagrams will help, really!" she mustered a confident voice. Silently praising herself, she looked at him with serious eyes. "I guess rustier is a word. I've heard people use it. But I've also heard people say 'They ain't got no money' so I guess the fact that I've only heard it doesn't really matter. Ummm...I don't know." She laughed.
He continued to speak, talking about 'le', and making english words sound french. Her head spun. What the heck was he talking about? This was just way too confusing. It made her feel like a complete idiot too, knowing that it didn't have to be confusing at all. He grinned at her, and she managed to grin back, even though it took a second for her confused mind to recognize the action.
“So, these diagrammings, how do you do them?” Raoul asked. She sat there in silence for a few moments. Diagramming? Oh yeah! She picked up her pencil and ripped a new sheet of paper out of her notebook.
"It's actually really easy. Don't worry, some of that stuff I was doing was kind of advanced. We can start with a really easy sentence to warm up!" she grinned and pointed at the first problem.
"He ran." she read. "This one's very easy. He is the sentence's noun, which is a person place or thing." Pause. "For this, it's called the subject, because it's what the sentence is about." She paused to draw a t-chart on the new scratch sheet of paper. "The subject of the sentence always goes on the top left corner of the chart, which is this thing that looks like a big T." She wrote He on the top left corner in cursive, another thing she had to work on. "Are you with me so far?"
