OOC: I’m writing this before the Championship, cause I think that Irene’s post with her letter was before…. Right?
BIC: Caedence led the way into the library, not bothering to care if Irene was following. She found a table and sat at it motioning to Irene to take a seat. She looked Irene over with a careful eye. She had seen the girl at practices, and she seemed to be a fair player, but only a game would tell. And the only way she would be in a game is if someone got knocked out of the game somehow. She sighed; she wanted to see Irene in action, but she also knew she’d rather not pay the cost to get her into the game.
“So, Irene, heard the ruckus in the commons. Why so happy? You know Cissy can’t stand it when others are happy,” she joked. Caedence gasped as she felt something fluffy brush against her legs. “Scrap!” She hissed, “I told you to stay in my room!” Scrap turned to look up at Caedence. Caedence sighed as she patted her knee. The kitten took careful aim, with much wriggling about, and sprang onto Caedence’s lap. Caedence idily scratched Scrap’s ears as she listened to Irene’s explanation.
OOC again: Sorry this is so short, I promise a longer reply to yours, okay? \n
OOC: Yep, the post was before the game and don't worry about post legnth =]
Irene followed Caedence to the Library, her letter still clutched in her hand. She was going home for the summer! She wasn't going to have to worry about who was behind the door whenever she heard a knock. She could spend the summer with the twins and Elaina like a normal kid.
Ceadence gestured for her to sit down and she did so. Irene didn't know Caedence too well. She knew not to get on her bad side, but that was common knowledge. Irene was silently grateful Caeence had come along back in the common rooms. Irene was in too good of a mood to get angry by arguing with Cissy. But still, she could have taken her... Okay, maybe with some injuries, but she wasn't one to back down.
“So, Irene, heard the ruckus in the commons. Why so happy? You know Cissy can’t stand it when others are happy,”
Irene laughed and shrugged. She didn't want to spill the whole story. She could, but it was a very long story that usually ended in awkward "Oh... I'm sorry. Sucks to be you." sort of moments. Irene decided to go with the vague, short response.
"It's a long story... Basically--" Irene cut off at a gasp from Caedence who shortly after hissed, "Scrap!" What? What is Scrap? “I told you to stay in my room!” A second later a kitten hopped onto Caedence's knees. Irene loved kittens. She had one of her own, but poor Gati didn't like Arizona. "Sneaky, aren't you?" She said smiling at the kitten.
"Anyways, I live with my Uncle in Northern Michigan because my dad's a jerk. We've been having some problems with him trying to bring me back to Kentucky. The letter said my uncle has real custody now," Irene siad, slightly rushed. It's a lot easier to tell a story after you know the ending, Irene decided.
"It was a long process. I'm just thankful it's over!" She said with a grin. "If I had to talk to another person in a suit about "how I would feel about living with my dad again" I probably have to set a bludger on them or something."
Scrap nudged Caedence’s hand so she would scratch her favorite spot (The black patch over her eye) Caedence was happy to see that Scrap’s fur was already growing out. She was going to have to see what kind of cat Scrap was, or if it was just a mixed breed.
Caedence listened patiently to Irene’s story. It sounded like she had a pretty tough year this year. Luckily for her, it all worked out. Caedence’s stomach, however, knotted. Listening to Irene tell about her dad made Caedence think of her own. While he wasn’t abusive, Caedence dreaded her return home. She didn’t really know which way she liked her dad more, cold and passive, not responding to anything she did, or openly criticizing her. After midterms, she would probably choose the ignoring version.
Caedence laughed at the bludger comment, “We can leave the beating to the Cravens, though,” She joked. “But, I… can kind of relate… about your dad…” Caedence said slowly and awkwardly. “B-but I would never need to be in a custody battle,” she rushed onward, cursing herself for almost being weak and spilling her guts, “At least you’re with your Uncle now.”
Scrap, bored with her mistress, and sensing that Irene was a friend, wriggled free of Caedence’s grasp and clambered onto the table. Caedence smirked at the kitten, remembering how not too long ago it refused to even leave its basket, let alone interact with others! It padded over to Irene, sat down in front of her, and mewed.
“I-I wouldn’t pick her up, but you can scratch her,” Caedence said hurriedly. Time for a topic change, she decided. “So, aren’t you a muggleborn? My mom’s a witch, and she’s the one who taught me how to fly. She taught me about quidditch too. Did you learn from your Uncle how to fly? Is he a wizard?” She asked. \n
“We can leave the beating to the Cravens, though,”
Irene laughed and nodded, "This is true..." She would love to see Joe Thorne (a.k.a. Mr. Man-in-black) play Quidditch. Oh, how fun that would be...
“But, I… can kind of relate… about your dad… B-but I would never need to be in a custody battle,”
Irene blinked, trying not to look surprised. Sonora must be like a sweet haven for her. Really, a bording school that you only have to leave for the summer? That's the best refuge you can get. Caedence seemed awkward about telling her. Irene was glad Caedence could trust her with something like that. It wasn't something that Irene went spreading around.
"Sonora must be great for you," she said, voicing her thoughts, "To get away and not worry about what's happening at home. Are you going back for the summer?"
"I don't know why Dad wanted me back..." She began. "It's not like he paid attention to me or anything when I lived with him. He just seemed to care the second Uncle Mike came and got me."
That was what she told Mr. Thorne. He talked to her like she was a time bomb! She hated it when people pitied her. She didn't want to be treated like some defenseless kid with a mean dad. Maybe they had that in common. Or not. Either way, it was something to say.
"I hate it when people give you that "Aww... I'm sorry, you poor kid!" stuff. You know what I mean? It's annoying. I'm not five and I'm not mentally unstable."
“At least you’re with your Uncle now.”
Irene grinned to herself. "Yeah, he's the best," she said. When she got back, Irene could picture him throwing a "Thank-God-your-freak-of-a-dad-is-gone" party. As this thought occured, Scrap hopped up onto the table and started over to her, sitting in front of her. Irene resisted the urge to 'Aww!' when it meowed and grinned down at it. Heeding Caedence's warning not to pick her up, Irene scratched the kitten behind her ears.
“So, aren’t you a muggleborn? My mom’s a witch, and she’s the one who taught me how to fly. She taught me about quidditch too."
"Actually, I'm a half-blood. Dad's a muggle and Mom was a witch. Uncle Mike is my mom's brother. They're the magic in the family."
Did you learn from your Uncle how to fly? Is he a wizard?”
Irene gave a short laugh. "It had barely lived there a day and he brought our his broom!" she said, smiling fondly at the memory. "It was funny watching him get excited about it. He's like a big kid. My cousins stay with us a lot, (they're parents travel) and we play Quidditch pretty much everyday of the summer. Those guys are the biggest Quidditch fans I have ever met..."
"Sonora must be great for you. To get away and not worry about what's happening at home.” Caedence refused to admit this was true. Her mother’s illness just added extra stress to the family that she didn’t need either. But her mom was getting better, if what her letters said was true. Are you going back for the summer?" Caedence nodded in answer to that.
"Actually, I'm a half-blood. Dad's a muggle and Mom was a witch. Uncle Mike is my mom's brother. They're the magic in the family. It had barely lived there a day and he brought our his broom! It was funny watching him get excited about it. He's like a big kid. My cousins stay with us a lot, (they're parents travel) and we play Quidditch pretty much everyday of the summer. Those guys are the biggest Quidditch fans I have ever met..."
Caedence’s usually guarded face, which had become less so over the past year, broke into a small grin. “It sounds like fun at your Uncle’s house. Mom was so excited to learn I was a witch, really. She’s not a good one, and my father” the words, as they oft did, came out bitterly, “doesn’t believe she has magic. She usually doesn’t use it.”
Her eyes danced with delight at the memory of her first broom ride. “She once took me out to the woods, by the Wapsipinicon River. There were a lot of trees, but she found a clearing and told me she had a surprise. She handed me a broom and told me to get on. I wasn’t really sure why she wanted me to, but I got on the broom. It was like… like I owned the world. My stomach seemed to still be on the ground, and I fell off and twisted my wrist, but it was my greatest memory,” Her smile grew slightly wider.
“You know, magic rocks!” she declared. “It got you to be with just your Uncle and it took me to this great school. I know so many ways to beat someone in a fight without lifting a finger! Those kids at home should be happy about my fear of exposure, or they’d be sorry for ever messing with me,” Her happy smile turned slightly predatory.
She glanced up at Irene, “You know, I hope things work out with you living at your Uncle’s. You’re a great Chaser, really, and I can’t wait to see you in action. You don’t ever really act like just a benchie. You deserve a good life.” she said sincerely. \n

"Mom was so excited to learn I was a witch, really. She’s not a good one, and my father” the words, as they oft did, came out bitterly, “doesn’t believe she has magic. She usually doesn’t use it.”
Irene gave a small frown. There are some people you don't have to meet to know that you won't like them. Irene was getting that impression from Caedence's father. He sounded controlling, ignorant, unappreciative... All characteristics that didn't go very well with Irene.
"Your mom sounds really nice. But I don't like your dad," Irene said. She was okay with saying that out loud because it seemed, to her, that Caedence didn't like him either.
Caedence's face lit up as she began to tell her about her first ride on a broom. My stomach seemed to still be on the ground, and I fell off and twisted my wrist, but it was my greatest memory,”
Irene grinned. She remembered her first ride on a broom. "Flying is definitely up there, if not at the top, of the great magical things! I remember the first time I got on a broom," she said, smiling at the memory, "It was about three days after I had moved in with Uncle Mike. I was bored so he taught me about Quidditch. So of course I was dying to fly now. I got on the broom and it was like... I don't know, some weird dream! I was kind of scared and I ended up falling into the pond from about ten feet up," she said, laughing at the last bit.
“You know, magic rocks!”
Irene grinned. That was for sure! Caedence continued, “It got you to be with just your Uncle and it took me to this great school. I know so many ways to beat someone in a fight without lifting a finger! Those kids at home should be happy about my fear of exposure, or they’d be sorry for ever messing with me,”
Irene laughed. "I'd love to see it when someone get's the idea they can fight you!" Caedence seemed to be thinking the same thing, as a slightly malicious smile appeared on her face.
“You know, I hope things work out with you living at your Uncle’s. You’re a great Chaser, really, and I can’t wait to see you in action. You don’t ever really act like just a benchie. You deserve a good life.”
Irene was truely grateful for that. She smiled gratefully and said, "Thanks, Caedence. That means a lot." She thought for a moment about the upcoming summer. From the sounds of it, Caedence's home wasn't exactly a vacation. She had said that Uncle Mike's house sounded fun...
"Hey," she said, looking up at her. "You... You want to come and hang out at my place for a while over the summer? We've got plenty of space and Uncle Mike is always up for new people. We could use another person to even up the Quidditch teams, too." she said with a smile. If Caedence didn't want to, that was fine. But the offer was up.
"Your mom sounds really nice. But I don't like your dad.”. Caedence would have to agree. Except, for her opinion, that would be a gross understatement.
She listened as Irene told her own story about her first broom ride. Caedence couldn’t help but smirk at the conclusion. She wished she had a pond to fall on. She was just lucky that she wasn’t too high up when she fell. Caedence only needed to wear an ace bandage for a while.
She was taken aback at Irene’s offer. What? Did people always throw their houses our for rent like some hotel? She wasn’t even friends with Irene! Elly was her only friend. Friends can be enemies at any time, and they are the worst. They know more about you than anyone.
But, then again, Elly wanted her to know more people. Would friends do what the other wanted? Is that the way things worked? And there would be Quidditch…
“Why not?” she said at last, “If my parents agree, that is. Where do you even live, huh?” she added.
Irene couldn't help but notice how Caedence looked a little surprised at her offer. Oh man... Irene hoped she hadn't just earned herself a spot on Caedence's list... Not after they had been getting on pretty well, at least, that's what she thought...
“Why not?”
Irene gave a small grin. Caedence added, “If my parents agree, that is. Where do you even live, huh?”
Irene nodded and then, out of pure habit, Irene held up her hand (in the shape of Michigan) and pointed to a spot at the top of her pointer finger. "There," she said. Then, Realizing what she was doing, she put her hand down and blushed slightly. "I mean," she said, hoping to make this make more sense. "We live in Northern Michigan. It's on the outside of a small town. We go over there to go to the arcade or something."
Caedence raised an eyebrow at Irene’s hand-map. How did that even look like Michigan? Maybe if she squinted really hard, she could see it. It would be nice to see Michigan. After all, she never had been there before, and going there for a day or two would be kind of cool. And she had never gone to an arcade. It was too confined a space. It didn’t have that many points of escape either. She usually felt claustrophobic at Happy Joes, she didn’t know how she’d deal with an arcade.
“I live in Illinois. Not near Chicago, but maybe we could, like, meet there? Or like a portkey? I’m going to London with Elly, so maybe after that I can go over to your house. Maybe a couple days. I’ll bring my broom. I can play Chaser, beater, whatever you need. Maybe you can write me when you want me over or something? Does that sound all right?” Caedence muttered. \n

Irene nodded. "Yep, that sounds great. We could probably get a portkey to somewhere in Chicago, or something," she said. Irene had never been to Chicago. She'd heard of various different things there. She'd watched the Cubs play the Tigers when she was living with Damon. That was about the extent of her Chicago-knowledge. "I've never been there, but it sounds cool!"
Irene went over the different possition in her head for a moment. Josh or Raye were always a Beater. Always. Irene usually played Chaser with Josh or Raye while Uncle Mike was the Keeper.
"I'll have to go over the teams with Josh. He's the sort of unofficial captain. He's probably planning plays as we speak!" Irene said with a grin. Irene looked down at the letter still laying in her lap and checked her watch. She still had homework to do if she wanted to do anything this weekend...
"Hey, I should probably reply to these," she said, holding up the letter. "So I'll write to you over the summer!" Irene said with a grin. She gave Caedence a wave and headed towards the Library doors. She had a feeling it was going to be a good week...
