Josiah was nervous. Summer was almost here, he hadn't had another Charms Club in a while (homework and classes prevented that) and he hadn't seen Hyana in a while. Not that it mattered. Hyana was a really good friend, and not talking to her was like not talking to any other one of his friends.
But, then again, now that Josiah thought about it, how many friends did he really have? Brett and Lucas hated him, he was sure of that. Irene and Law barely knew him. Hikaru… that explained itself. Caedence wanted to see him hung from the ceiling by his little toe, though he didn’t know why. (He only whistled as she walked by, and flirted a bit… a lot) In fact, all in all, Elly and Hyana were the only ones who were his friend. He hoped it wasn’t because of his pureblood family. He knew all the other purebloods probably didn’t care at all about the Ashwoods, because, despite its relation to the business tycoons, the Silverleafs, the family was rather small.
So here he found himself, sitting at a table in the library, reading a book about old pureblooded families that his mother wanted him to read, not taking in a word it said. It was almost eight, and he was still a bit relaxed from supper. He couldn’t help but think about his only good friends.
Elly, well she was pretty in her own right. Her red hair, after being cut short just before midterm, shone like coppery gold. She didn’t seem to care for the dress he bought for her, but that was okay. She knew he cared, at least. Maybe next year, he could ask her if there was anything that she wanted above anything else. Elly was kind, and sweet, a bit on the loud side, but that was okay with him. She was so outgoing, and never ever seemed at a loss of what to do to liven up the afternoon. He knew that she was going to be paired up with that Echo guy that he met in COMC. They seemed to be more than good friends.
And of course, there was Hyana. She was so kind and sweet, but unlike Elly, she was shy, and unsure. Her dark hair framed her half Asian face so beautifully. He sighed, thinking of her. She was always so meek, so modest. She never really did speak up in a crowd. She was so unlike Elly, but he didn’t mind. He was sure she would end up with Lucas or Hikaru… maybe Hikaru if the kid would stop pulling his crazy stunts. Lucas seemed like the perfect match. He was so cool, with his bangs that always met his eyes. Thinking about the guy, for reasons he didn’t even know, made his gut twist with jealousy. He didn’t like Hyana, so why did he get so jealous?
So involved in his thoughts, Josiah didn’t notice someone sit down next to him. It took him a moment more to realize it was the Asian girl he was just daydreaming about.
“H-Hyana… H-hi there,” he said, his blush standing out against the freckles that dusted his nose. He nervously rubbed the back of his orange head. “What’s new?” he said, trying to act cool and calm. \n

Hyana really needed to keep working on her novel. She needed to write about the library, the atmosphere, people who usually visited, stuff like that. And where better to work than the library? She was writing about it of course. But...it was so quiet there, no cries of soccer. Maybe she could finish her book. Or just read a little bit of it...before she wrote of course.
She had pulled her hair into a half ponytail, letting it rest over one sholder. Her bangs kept falling out, ending up framing her face. She sighed in frusturation as she walked into the library. She really needed to ask Caedence about that braid thing.
Upon entering, she realized how many people were really there. Finals, weren't they coming up soon? How could she have forgotten?! Luckily her bag was pretty much empty, and with her too. That was an added bonus. So Hyana walked over to the shelves, taking out a charms book. It wasn't that she needed to learn more about charms. She just...she enjoyed charms, that was all.
She looked for an empty seat somewhere, and found the nearest one. Right next to Josiah. She found herself more annoyed by her bangs than ever. But why? How she looked didn't matter. Then why did she care? Josiah was her friend. He was too much of a flirt to keep a true relationship anyway.
After much convincing, she forced her legs to move, and she sat quietly next to Josiah. He was wrapped up in a book it seemed. She peered over to the binding. It was something about purebloods, that much was for certain. How interesting. Suddenly, Josiah snapped out of his thoughts, to catch her staring!
He greeted her, blushing all the while. She had embarrassed him. That wasn't good. Messing with the locket from her mother and Bryan, she forced herself not to blush. She didn't like him. They were friends. Nothing else. "What's new?" He asked her.
"Nothing much, I guess." She replied, trying to be confident. Josiah was bothered by her shyness. She wasn't like any girls he would probably end up with. But again, why did she care? "My mom's got a new boyfriend." She said conversationaly, still messing with the locket. "I don't like him very much. He kinda acts like an older version of you." Blushing, Hyana realized how mean that sounded.
"Not that I don't like you Josiah! Y-you're great and..." She trailed off, staring at the table. "What's new with you?"
if brian is like me, and you don't like him.... :'(
by Josiah
Josiah’s stomach seemed to fall out. She didn’t like Brian? But she said that he was like this Brian. Does that mean she didn’t like him? Was she lying? What did that mean?
He let his over-drive brain take a rest as he focused on the locket that Hyana was messing with. A token from a lover back home? Or a gift from her mother? Or a gift from Brian who was not-like-him-but-is? It was really pretty, he’d give her that. Almost as pretty as she was.
He felt himself easily sliding back into his flirtatious mode. “So, my dear Hyana, I noticed the trinket on your neck. A present from a lover, perhaps? A token of undying love?” he teased. Well, it was mostly a tease. A part of him was afraid that it was true.
He put the book down, leaving it open to the pace he was on, face-down. His mother would scream at him for such mistreatment of books, but he didn’t care. He gave her a look that was part flirtatious, but held an undertone of suspicion and jealousy. He didn’t know why he even cared. He just… cared. The jealousy and suspicion soon faded, however, to be replaced by an easy smile.
“Anyways…” he said, trying to come up with a topic, “What is it like? Actually being in a quidditch game Hyana? I haven’t been in one… mother and father think it’s improper, to do something as barbaric as participating in spots…” he sighed longingly. His one thing that he would want to do above anything else is to play in a match. “I watched you keep last term.. And I watched all the other games too… But I wasn’t in the crowd… I didn’t want any pures to see me and tell mother…” he mumbled. \n

Hyana didn't know why, but she couldn't stop messing with Bryan's stupid locket. The cold surface of the heart shaped locket calmed her down. She didn't know why she was so...jumpy. It always happened around Josiah too. It didn't matter though. Maybe it was just timing or something. They were only friends.
Josiah seemed to be thinking, just like her, and she stole a glance at him. He wasn't that bad. Why did people dislike him so much? The flirting. That had to be it. The problem was the flirting thing. It did make people feel uncomfortable. But he was still an awesome guy!
“So, my dear Hyana," Josiah said suddenly, bringing Hyana out of her thoughts. She couldn't help but laugh. This was the flirting she was just thinking about. And yet, she didn't mind. Josiah just wasn't Josiah without his flirting. He asked a question about the locket, and she thought carefully. He just teased her, she should try to tease him back. Hyana wasn't too good at teasing...but maybe...
"This?" she asked. Taking the locket off, she held it in the palm of her hand. "A token of undying love? Of course it is." She grinned at Josiah as she handed it to him. "If you call a gift from my mom and her boyfriend a token of undying love." She laughed at the end.
She hoped that her joke really got Josiah. She thought it was funny...but maybe Josiah didn't. After all, he was giving Hyana a look. Sure, the look was full of the normal flirting, but there was something else. She just couldn't quite place her finger on it...
Josiah seemed keen to change the subject, or was just struggling to come up with one, because they ended up talking about Quidditch. He even went on a small rant about how he wasn't allowed to play. It didn't seem quite fair to him. There was nothing improper about Quidditch...well, except the bludgers...and all the fouls...and...okay, there were plenty of improper things about Quidditch.
"Quidditch is a lot of fun. It's very difficult," She replied, "And the bludgers are absolutly terrifying. I think that it's much harder to watch a game than being in one though." She laughed. "I watched the Quidditch Championship with Brett and Echo. It was hard to keep track of everything."
Thinking about the other things Josiah had said, she tilted her head to one side, a curious look on her face. "You weren't in the crowd? No wonder I didn't see you. Where have you been watching the matches from?" Was it really possible to watch the matches somewhere besides the Pitch? Maybe...
"This? A token of undying love? Of course it is. If you call a gift from my mom and her boyfriend a token of undying love." Josiah blushed and laughed slightly. Boy he was stupid! He turned it over in his hands a few times before handing it back. It was a pretty locket.
Then Hyana told him what it was like to play quidditch. He watched her raptly, drinking in everything she said. He felt like a starving man given a loaf of bread. Quidditch was so wonderful! He wished above anything else that he could play. There were plenty pure bloods who played quidditch! Why couldn’t he?
"You weren't in the crowd? No wonder I didn't see you. Where have you been watching the matches from?"
“W-well, I just kind of stick on the ground, sort of out of sight from the other people, especially Wolfe and Fox. I don’t think I’m allowed to stay on the ground. It gives me a terrible crick in my neck, but I can’t risk the pureblooded spectators telling Mother and Father. Mother would be ever so angry and Father wouldn’t like me disobeying any orders at all. He believes in strictly following rules. He’s just so.. so… pure!“ He spat out the last word, “I wish he didn’t work at the stupid ministry or care about his social circle or anything, but…” Josiah sighed, “After all, ‘Do your part to preserve our honor, the Ashwoods are always pure’” He quoted the family motto. He shrugged.
“What am I doing? You don’t need to listen to me complain… my apologies Miss Hyana! I would love to discuss whatever topic you feel is better to have instead of my complaints,” He said, blushing, “Oh do forgive me! I’m speaking like a pure! Oh!” He rapped his head with his knuckles realizing that he was, in his nervousness, dropping his casual speech. Why was he being such a blubbering idiot? Why? He glanced at Hyana with a sheepish smile. \n
Hyana could laugh at how much Josiah payed attention during her Quidditch speak. It wasn't that good of an explanation. She was just rambling. But it seemed to be good enough for her friend.
In order to answer her question, he went into an entire rant about purebloods. Even after his rant, he began to apologize over and over again, rapping his knuckles against his head. It was difficult for her to resist grabbing his wrist and telling him to cut it out. He could cause more damage up there than there already was!
"Don't worry about it, Mr. Josiah," She teased yet again, a grin on her face. "I like hearing about pureblood stuff. It's not something you can really learn from a book, is it?" She tapped her chin with her index finger. What to talk about, what to talk about?
"What are you going to do over the summer Josiah?" she asked curiously. "Anything interesting, or are you stuck doing pureblood things?"
Aw, it's in its nature to be evil! And what about a hug?
by Josiah
Josiah smiled. Hyana was so kind and caring! She even teased him a little bit. “Trust me, you’d rather not learn about our type” He interjected after she said she liked hearing about pures. What kind of a maniac would like the pure society? A masochist, maybe, but not a genuinely nice girl! With her beautiful almond eyes… her dark hair… Josiah snapped back into reality. What would Hyana think of him, acting so improper? It was a dishonor to his family name to be such a pervert and stare so! His mother kept telling him that being such a flirt was improper, and he decided to listen for once.
"What are you going to do over the summer Josiah?" she asked curiously. "Anything interesting, or are you stuck doing pureblood things?"
Josiah looked at her. She actually cared about his summer! How nice of her! He let his face slide into a bright grin, unaware of the red blush that crept once more across his cheeks, clashing with his orange hair.
“W-well, I don’t know honestly. I do know that mother will probably have me go to some stupid ball which I care nothing for, most likely shoving me into either a tux or dress robe that is uncomfortable and or itchy, and probably will be little to no fun. Father promised he’d do something with me, however, and I do hope he will! I also have to take care of Custard for Elly, I’m sure, and I’ve got Teppers and Mortemer and Racheel… other than that? Not really anything.” He looked at her with an easy smile.
“Are you doing anything at all, Hyana?” He asked, wondering if she was getting at something. \n
0JosiahAw, it's in its nature to be evil! And what about a hug?0Josiah05
Hyana let out a laugh. Josiah really didn't like his family. "Actually, I would like to learn about purebloods." she replied to his interjection. He really didn't know how much they were alike. At least, in the family area. He seemed to dislike his family, and she absolutly hated her current family. Hyana doubted that Bryan would last that long. No one ever did.
Hyana kept her eye on Josiah, listening intently to what he had to say. She noticed the blush that had appeared on his cheeks. How couldn't she, when his hair made it so noticable? But she didn't mention it. It was warm in the Library, so maybe it wasn't even a blush. And anyway, why would he be blushing. There was no reason.
"I'm sorry about the ball. I wouldn't be happy either, if I was forced to go somewhere I didn't want to go." she herself interjected. "But your father is going to do something with you? That's great! He promised, and he can't go back on a promise. It's just wrong."
“Are you doing anything at all, Hyana?” Josiah asked her. Hyana shook her head with a smile.
"No, not really. Mom's not going to force me to go to Japan," she replied. "All I know is from what Bryan and mom wrote me this morning. They told me I'd have to find a place to stay until July, because they decided that we're going to move to Arizona." she wrinkled her nose a bit. "I liked where I lived. It's the house daddy bought. Not that it matters." she shrugged and let out a sigh.
"I'm not going to ask Elly or Caedence, because I think they have plans or something, Talitha has something, I can't remember what, and Camren wouldn't want me over anyway...if I can't find a place, or if no one offers, I guess I could always ask Hikaru." She shuddered at the thought. "That would be one interesting month, wouldn't it?" she laughed. Maybe Josiah knew of someone, and maybe they would be someone she knew.
"No, not really. Mom's not going to force me to go to Japan," Josiah’s face fell. She was going to Japan? But then she couldn’t send him letters or anything!
"All I know is from what Bryan and mom wrote me this morning. They told me I'd have to find a place to stay until July, because they decided that we're going to move to Arizona. I liked where I lived. It's the house daddy bought. Not that it matters."
Josiah smirked. “Arizona’s not bad, you practically live here anyways!” He joked.
"I'm not going to ask Elly or Caedence, because I think they have plans or something, Talitha has something, I can't remember what, and Camren wouldn't want me over anyway...if I can't find a place, or if no one offers, I guess I could always ask Hikaru. That would be one interesting month, wouldn't it?"
Josiah’s already flushed face grew redder. “Well, Hyana, you could spend time at my house… Mother doesn’t need to know that you’re a muggleborn. An it’s a big big house! We have lots of rooms! And, despite her better judgment, mother has a big yard that we can fly in and it’s an all magical community and it’s really really great and it has a swimming pool and too many fancy things that I’m not allowed to play with and I can’t wear any comfy clothes but it’s really great there I guess if you like big houses, cause it’s big. I think Father makes a lot at his job.”
Josiah paused for breath, “The best part? We’re in Arizona!” he grinned “So you can come visit any time you want and have lots of fun with me!” He grinned possibly the widest smile he had ever smiled in his life. “What do you say?” he asked clapping an hand on her shoulder and winking.
Hyana smiled at his joke. “Yeah, I know, I know.” she said with her sad sort of smile. “But daddy bought that house before he died. And momma says he and my sister died in a car crash in Arizona, so we’re probably going to move next to their graves…” Hyana stared at her feet, not noticing the increasing redness of Josiah’s face.
“Well, Hyana, you could spend time at my house.” Josiah said. Hyana looked up at her friend, surprised. “W-what?” she stuttered, but it wasn’t a nervous stutter, like usual. It was different. A surprised stutter. She listened to what he said, eyes wide.
“Do you mean it Josiah?” she asked when he was done. “I can…I can really stay?” She wasn’t too sure she should take him up on his offer. She was a muggleborn after all. She might get him in trouble, and she didn’t want that. “What do you say?” he asked clapping an hand on her shoulder and winking. She blushed. He really meant it. He really wanted her over, he really wanted to help.
“Of course!” she exclaimed. Noticing some of the studying kids giving her annoyed looks, she blushed again. “I mean, of course.” she whispered. “Thank you so much Josiah!” Then she did an un-Hyana thing, something she had been doing a lot lately. She gave her friend a hug. “I’ll pay you back, promise.” Pulling away from him with a huge grin, she looked at Josiah.
“I need to write them, I’ll tell you what they say.” she said, giving him another quick and excited hug before running out of the library. She couldn’t wait until the summer!
