It was nearly summer, and Lutece was more than ready for break to come. Not necessarily for the same reason she had yearned for midterm, but mostly because she was tired. Even her minimal efforts in classes had ceased. She simply didn’t care enough to do any of the work. The first year was actually starting to do well on tests and quizzes, after months of borderline-failing grades, but she simply could not summon up the effort for any assignments. At this point, they all seemed rather futile.
She was physically exhausted because she had been spending so much time training on her own for summer soccer, mentally worn out, and she hadn’t been sleeping either. Contrary to what might be expected, this didn’t make Lutece a nastier person than usual. Just the opposite, actually. Considerably more lethargic than usual, she simply could not summon up the effort or desire to be nasty to anyone.
At the moment, she was tucked in a back corner of the library between the “Muggle Belief and Religions” and “Teen Issues” section, head against the wall, semi-conscious; the state between sleep and wakefulness. The few sounds that were made in the library seemed abstract and far off as her eyelids drifted closed again.
The end of the year was drawing ever closer, and Oliver wasn’t sure how he felt about it. He knew now what going home would be like, having survived through midterm with his family, so at least he was prepared. Besides, he had the whole summer to get reacquainted with his family; it would be fine.
Anyway, Oliver was done with his homework for the moment. He had been looking to spend time with Talitha or Gwyneth, but couldn’t find them. Oliver still wished to have some male friends his own age, but he hadn’t really clicked with any of the first year boys. Perhaps he would have better luck next year? So, to pass the time, he had decided to get to know the library a little better. He had only been in once in his whole time at Sonora, to do a bit of further potions research. Considering the size of the library, though, Oliver thought it was probably worth having a look around, even if just to get a better idea of what sort of books there were available.
As he ambled quietly around, peeking at titles every so often, Oliver’s eyes came to rest on a very familiar figure, apparently asleep against one of the walls. It was Lutece – Oliver’s year and housemate, and by far the craziest person he had ever met. He mused briefly what she was still doing at Sonora. He was sure she was failing most of he classes, she didn’t have any friends, and, most importantly, probably still thought the whole concept of magic was a joke. Seriously, it was a wonder Lutece had survived so long in Crotalus. Apparently the older students weren’t aware of her misbeliefs, otherwise they’d have torn her limb from limb by now. They weren’t especially sympathetic towards Muggleborns as it was, but a Muggleborn who didn’t even believe in magic?
Oliver stood still for a few moments, wondering what to do. He should just keep on, he knew it. If she stayed asleep there and missed food it really was her problem, and not his. Oliver really didn’t have a desire to speak to Lutece – he saw her in class, Quidditch practise, and the commons as it was. Even though she looked a bit frazzled round the edges, that really wasn’t her concern. She just needed a bit of rest, and he should just keep right on walking. Yes. Having made up his mind, Oliver took a determined step away from the crazy girl, and promptly tripped over his own feet. Letting out a cry of surprise, realising too late that it was probably enough to wake her, he fell onto his knees with a dull thud.
