Desperately needing to get my mind off things. by Adam Brockert

He needed an escape, desperately. After the letter Adam had gotten from Professor McKindy and the letter he'd sent back, he'd been able to think of nothing else. He was positive that his letter to Professor McKindy had been worded all wrong and that the recipient would think horribly of him. Adam had no social skills whatsoever, that's why everyone disliked him so much. He was even going to now be on the bad side of another of his teachers and this was worse than being on Professor O'Leary's bad side since the Defense teacher really didn't seem that fond of anyone and Professor McKindy wasn't quite so mean. Adam just hoped that he'd be able to make up the lesson privately.

The thought of actually going to that club was something that was too much to even bear.

Aside from that, midterm was coming and his family was going to his maternal grandparents' house. Adam shuddered at the thought. Some of his mom's relatives were snobs and proper purebloods. They just plain didn't like him either. His cousins thought he was a baby and some of his aunts thought he was mentally unstable. Even his grandparents didn't seem to think much of him. Besides, there were lots of people there and it qualified as the kind of social event Adam didn't like at all.

Turning a corner,he came to the place he usually sat at,which was of course, in a very isolated corner of the library. If Adam was going to be in a public place, it was going to be as out of the way as possible. He glanced up at the books that were shelved there. Lots of them had to do with types of wood, not stuff most students would be interested in. Which was what made it the ideal place for Adam to go hide out. His eyes settled on a book on wand making. Hm, perhaps that would be interesting. He'd always had a healthy fascination for what made each wand different and why it chose a particular wizard.

Adam quickly grabbed it and sat down in the chair that seemed to be more or less his since it was in his usual hiding place. He began reading. A good twenty minutes or so had passed before he heard the footsteps that sounded like thunder. "Gah!" He cried out, dropping his book on the floor. Adam's face flooded as he bent down to pick it up. He'd hate to have anyone know what he was reading, lest they criticized him for it. It was bad enough that he'd just made a total fool of himself by showing he was startled. \n\n

Desperately needing to get my mind ON things by Eavan Valentine

Eavan was bored. Bored, bored, bored. One would think that in a school of magic there would always be something new and exciting happening, but that just wasn't the case. So faar today, Eavan had strolled the gardens, listened to her brother gloat about Crotalus's first win and his amazing save, and after a long lunch, here she was: wandering aimlessly about the library with a list of books held in front of her.

The list was from her loving Aunt Zoe, who instisted that every good students needs to read every book on the list which ranged from A Day in the Life of an Alchemist to Zombies and Werewolves: A Guide to Self Defense, most of which didn't interest her in the least. So Eavan closed her eyes in the middle of the library and pointed to a random item on the list. She opened her eyes and looked down. Everything You'd Even Want to Know About Your Wand and More She sighed and began searching the shelves for books on wands.

After fifteeen minutes searching through the section on wands and not finding anything, she was about to give up when she noticed that the row next to her was about wood. Now however dull a section on wood might be, it could have the book she was looking for. Wands were made of wood, right?

After so long hunting down this elusive book, she practically ran towards the wood section and stopped. She could've sworn she heard someone cry out, but there was no one to be seen. The she saw a figure beneath the table picking up a book. Curious to see who could've been so startled by her that they dropped their book, she bent down to see better.

"Hello, sorry to have scared you...oh, Adam! Hi! Do you remember me? I'm Eavan, we were partnered up that day we wnt to the Quidditch Pitch with Professor McKindy and the spell went bad and you got sick. Are you okay now?"

My mind's on too many things, hence the wait. by Adam B.

His heart pounding, he looked up briefly at the person and shoved the book down into the chair. It was Eaven, someone Adam wasn't quite sure what to make of. Sure, she'd been pretty nice to him when they'd first met but that was before he'd gotten sick and made a fool of himself. He still wasn't all that sure what happened. Professor McKindy thought it was the ear and it hadn't seemed like one of Adam's normal attacks. Still, he wasn't sure. Something else could be very wrong with him physically as well as mentally. Maybe he had some horrible disease, though he hadn't had any problems since the week after the incident in Charms.

Adam listened carefully to what Eaven said, his brain analyzing her words and tone. Certainly, she sounded friendly enough, asking how he was. (Then again, Professor McKindy had also expressed concern before hitting him with the whammy of wanting to attend a club.) "Um, I'm fine." Adam replied. Well, he wasn't really but he wasn't about to tell someone he barely knew all his problems. He'd only talk to Kaylie or Pepper or Professor Deck about them and the latter two he still wasn't entirely sure wouldn't stop liking him...and his sister was too busy with her boyfriend to pay attention to him. Besides, Eaven was only asking about what happened in class.

Adam looked down at the ground anxiously and shuffled his feet, not knowing what else to say or what she was going to say. Mentally, he checked over whether or not what he said was all right. The words seemed okay, he'd only said the bare minimum words required. His tone seemed off though, he thought.\n\n

Tis okay... by Eavan

Eavan grabbed the end of her long braid and began to fiddle with the end, a small nervous habit of hers. Usually she wasn't nervous, but for some reason, this conversation was making it happen. He seemed incredibly shy and Eavan wasn't exactly used to it. When she was nice, people were nice back...most of the time. End of story.

She would just have to try harder.

"Well, I'm glad you're okay," she said warily and then stopped for a second, at a loss for what to say next. Trying to keep the conversation alive, she picked the first random idea that came to her mind.

"Isn't your sister on Teppenpaw's Quidditch team? My brother plays for Crotalus and I wanted to play too, but not against my brother. Maybe after he graduates...Do you like Quidditch?"\n\n

Good.. by Adam B.

"Thank you." Adam murmured, his face flushed with red. He shuffled his feet and continued looking at the ground. She sounded like she was uncomfortable. It was probably something he'd done, he could never do anything right. He never had been and never would be able too. He was worthless.

"Isn't your sister on Teppenpaw's Quidditch team? My brother plays for Crotalus and I wanted to play too, but not against my brother. Maybe after he graduates...Do you like Quidditch?"

Oh of all the things Eaven could have picked to talk about, she chose the one subject Adam should stay away from. It wasn't like it was her fault, he knew that, it was his own. Most normal people did like Quidditch. He just didn't, and wasn't normal, apparently. How could he phrase this without her hating him? Adam was sure she wouldn't like him because she clearly liked it while he didn't. People tended to think something was wrong with you when you disagreed with them. "Um, n-not really." He looked down at his shoes again. "But yeah, my sister is the seeker. She's really good, she caught the snitch both times last year. She's the prefect too." Adam babbled. He didn't like himself much, but he was really proud of Kaylie.

His face flushed again, when he realized Eaven didn't ask about that. "Er, I'm s-sorry, you didn't really want to know that..or you probably already knew that.." Adam trailed off. He should just shut up. Someone should just take his voice away permanently. "So uh..your brother is Earl then?" He felt this was a dumb question but he needed to get the subject away from Quidditch.

Very good by Eavan

So he didn't like Quidditch. That was all right. Eavan wasn't a fanatic about it like Earl was and was completely fine when Adam suddenly changed the topic.

"That's all right. There's a lot of people who don't like Quidditch, actually." She stopped and smiled when Adam got onto the subject of his sister. It was completely obvious that he loved his sister. Just like Eavan loved Earl.

"I didn't know she was a prefect. She must be really nice and smart to be one. I'll never be one probably. I'm not that smart." Eavan smiled to herself thinking of what her rule-breaking brother would do if he ever made prefect. Ask for a recount, probably.

"Yeah, Earl's my brother. He's great. I just wish we were in the same house. I always talk to him about everything and here I barely get to see him." Eavan sighed and rested her chin in the palm of her hand.

"But you didn't need to know all that; I'm blabbering, but there's not much else to do."\n\n
