La-di-da by Darci Analai

Where were they? Where were they? Where were they!? Darci threw the book she was holding at the shelf in frustration, causing a few more books to fall. Where were all the songbooks? Piano pieces, choral pieces! Darci stamped her foot on the ground. "Don't tell me this stupid school has never heard of music books!" she whispered, not wanting to annoy the librarian. After all, she may need the lady on her good side, so Darci could talk to her calmly about the need for music in a school.

And Darci was talking about that rock band Bella was starting. Darci loved rock, but she was a classical pianist and a choral singer. She didn't sing rock unless it was in the comfort of her room with some CD blasting to cover her voice up. Darci wanted this school to have a choir, or at least some music books for her to at least practice with! Darci would have to talk to the head about this. Or maybe... she, like Bella, could start something. Maybe her own choir! She could play piano after all...
But what older student would follow her? An eleven year old. They were probably too stubborn to see her awesomness, and would rebel.

Sure, Darci could force them to calm down. But that would take a lot of force. And she just didn't want to waste her time on it. Wasting time was bad.

Well, Darci guessed she would have to write a letter of complaint to the Headmaster about this outrage. She could get that vH1 to help with their "Save the Music Foundation" or Hot Topic, even though she hated the people who shopped there and pretended they were individual when really they were just joining a huge cliche (goths, but Darci never believed in labels). But she would do that later, first she would write to Ally. Complain to her best friend about this before moving on to Headmaster.

And Darci missed her quiet friend too, she wished Ally was here at Sonora with her.

So Darci sat at a table and pulled paper and a pen (she could use a quill, she just didn't want to) and began to write to her best friend.

Ally,

Hey, yeah, I know it sucks that I'm away. At least Tracy is gone, but I miss you loads. Hope you and my dad are having fun with Tullia. Bad news, if Dad hasn't told you already. I won't be going to HighSchool with you! Instead, I'll be wasting my life here, without you and our fun. And, without a choral prgram. Yep, you guessed it. This stupid school has no choral program (if you're wondering why I said stupid, and not my usual swear, I don't want the teachers to catch me writing swears, ask later)! I'm complaining to the Headmaster about it. Blah, and what's with that name, Headmaster. it's so old school... Jesus.
Anyway, I miss you thiiiiiiiiis much, mi amore-
{----------------------------------------------}
Yes... that much. No more no less. Write back soon BITHO!
Love love love,
Darci

And that was it. Now onto her complaint.

Or not. Or she could yell at whoever just walked into her section. So Darci turned and smiled her oddest, creepiest smile.\n\n

My hearing is really good this year by Zack Dill

Zack was manning the "Alderaanian Prefect Station" as he had begun to think of his favored table in the Science section of the library when he heard a disturbing noise. It sounded like books falling. He stood up to investigate, but first he had to secure his station.

He drew up a quick "Be Back In Five Minutes" sign which he magically fastened beneath the more elaborate sign he'd created to announce the table as the Alderaanian Prefect Station. He also put away his charms homework so nobody would copy it or anything, then when in search of the party responsible for dropping books.

He found the books on the floor fairly easily, but the perpetrator had already fled the scene. There was a girl not too far away, writing away at something, who might have been a witness, but Zack put off further investigation in favor of setting the books to rights. He carefully put them away in their proper places, only missing the Dewey system out of loyalty to his home library.

Not that Dewey would have know where to classify "Ghouls in Music" - presumably in the 700s under 'The Arts' but did it make a difference if the artists were undead? Zack made a mental note to figure out how to work Charms and CoMC textbooks in the Dewey system later.

Once the books were checked for damage (they seemed all right) and put safely away, Zack turned his attention back to the possible witness. Who was giving him a really odd look.

Zack froze. Warily, he gave a tentative smile back. "Er, hi," he said, his voice giving away that he was a little creeped. But he was a prefect, he had the badge right there on his robes opposite the Alderaanian House badge, and he had important prefectly questions to ask. "Did you see who knocked down those books?" he asked, pointing back to the shelf he had just fixed up.\n\n

No good for me by Darci

When Darci saw the older boy, in an obvious point of authority, Darci turned her creepy smile into the "normal" one. Darci was always good with authority, if you weren't you never had the upper hand. If they abused their power, then you could hate them and show it. But if someone was good and fair, then it was a smart thing to be good and fair to them back. Prefect was an obvious point of authority as well. But what was Prefect boy here for?

Darci's brown eyes made a quick check to where the books were. It seemed Prefect boy oicked them up. Ah, well, admitting to that wasn't too bad. And it showed she was honest (other people she knew it was perfectly acceptable to lie to, which she liked to do), something she found authorities liked. "Sorry about that," Darci said with a grin. Confidently, yet with a hint of guilt in her voice. "I got frustrated. They don't have the right books there, as I was just telling the friend I'm sending this letter to," Darci waved the letter before beginning to fol it up.

Now, to make small talk. Maybe this boy, the point of authority, could help her on her mission to bring music to the magic. "It's an outrage. No songbooks. No pieces or lyrics or staffs. Just boring histories on people who played music," Darci paused for a second before adding, "And not the kind of history that a musician would need to figure out why an artist wrote a certain piece or their feeling about things. Just... history. Things that don't matter as much when it comes to their music. Sure certain major and minor events are good to know, and the date of birth. But every little boring thing, please!" Darci rolled her eyes.

"That would be slightly acceptable if they had actual books with music in them. But they don't," she scoffed, flipping her brown hair. "How can that section be called the 'Arts' when there is nothing remotely artistic in there?" She was fuming now. "Just because we go to a magic school doesn't mean we have to lose all concept of the outside world! It doesn't mean all they have to teach is history and magic, get creative once and a while! Music! Arts! Creative writing, even! I'm good at that." Darci finally sat back down to take a breather and slip Ally's letter into an envelope.

She was still fuming, but hoped she hadn't scared away Prefect boy. Or... she wanted to scare him a little, just not away. Darci loved to scare people.\n\n

I'm Prefect Boy now, am I? by Zack

Zack was confounded. When he had seen the books lying on the floor like that, he had every intention of taking points off their House. He wanted to take points off. The Headmaster said he could take points off people for misbehaving, and this had been his first excuse to do so. He really wanted to. It would be so cool.

But she had voluntarily confessed. He hadn't even suspected her, so she totally could have gotten away with it. He could have done with less of a smile when she said sorry, but she'd sounded pretty genuine about it. It was a real connundrum.

Okay, so no points off, for taking responsibility. But he couldn't just let her get away with it either. "Okay," he said, trying to come up with an alternate punishment that wasn't as severe. "But you're going to help me go around the tables and put away all the books that people just left there." That seemed fair and fitting, he thought. Her own offense was leaving books on the floor after all.

"After that, I'll ask around and see if I can find anyone who know where to find songbooks and stuff," he wasn't really familiar with the actual practice of the Arts, himself, but she seemed passionate enough about it that he figured it was worth looking into, if not for himself, then for any of the kids who came to his Prefect station. It wouldn't do to have to tell them he didn't know something.\n\n

You should feel special now! by Darci

Darci sighed, oh so now she was going to get punished? For having a right to music? That was extremely stupid! At least from her standpoint. Ah well, it wasn't too bad of a punishment. And maybe she could get Prefect boy on her good side as well. So Darci nodded, "That's fine. I suppose I could do that without crying," she grinned to show she was kidding.

"And thanks," Darci added calmly. Really inside she was congradulating herself. Hah, only a few seconds into talking to Prefect boy had she gotten him to help her with the music problem. Sure, he hadn't said he would help her bring band and choir to these childrens' miserable, boring magic filled lives, but she could change that, right? Of course she could, she was Darci Analai. She could make an athiest join religion if she wanted to. Not that she'd ever do that, she wasn't one for shoving beliefs down peoples' throats like her old school did.

"I'm thinking of starting a choir here when I get older, and it's more likely for the older guys to listen to me. Like that Bella Santoro girl? I applaude her for starting a band," Darci continued. "My brother's a great guitarist, and he signed up, I hope he makes it. But even though I like rock, I sing choral music, so that band wouldn't work out for me. But if Bella can start a band, then I can start a choir later on, right?" Darci wanted to make sure.

"I mean, I could do it now. I'm good at piano, and I've had voice lessons for a while. But I'm sure older students wouldn't listen to a twelve-year-old," Darci muttered, looking up for Prefect boy's reaction. Would he listen to a twelve (okay, she was eleven, twelve in a month)-year-old if she showed signs of intelligence and authority? \n\n

Oh, I do, I do. by Zack Dill

OOC: Hopefully, I'm not writing for you too much here. I assume that if Zack voluntarily does most of the work that he assigned Darci, she won't complain. If I'm wrong, let me know and we'll pretend it went a little different. BIC:

As they moved around the library putting away books, Zack barely noticed that he was hogging all the putting away. He was too much of perfectionist to allow the younger student to do more than carry books when a table had more than one.

While they worked, he listened to her talk about the choir thing she wanted to do and Bella's thing. Zack had seen the notice for that, but had promptly forgotten about it. Bella might have some sheet music or whatever it was the girl had wanted. She was in Alderaan, he could probably ask her later and use a copy charm to make some duplicates for the girl. He really ought to ask what her name was.

Putting away a Beginner's Guide to Quidditch, he answered her concerns, "Well, you probably don't have to wait too long. Last year, a first year named Echo started a Noveling club. He just put out a lot of fliers and asked one of the teachers to be a supervisor. He didn't get a lot of people but he had a decent turn out, and not all of them were firsties like him." Granted, Zack had been the only then-fourth year and there had been one second year, while the club had three first years, but that was probably because the kid had dragged in his friends.

"You don't have to be that formal either. As far as I know Bella doesn't have an advisor. I've got a group that does Dungeons and Dragons, too, which is pretty much just me a couple friends, but we meet pretty regularly in the Cascade Hall and we'd let anyone join us if they asked. Especially if they're a DM."

They were just passing by his Prefect station, which had a lot of books left abandoned on the table. "That's my stuff, we can just leave that. If I find any song books, you can swing by here in a few days and I'll have them waiting for you. If I can't, I'll see what I can do about getting some from Outside. Stop by and let me know what you're looking for exactly. What's your name, by the way?"

His own name was displayed on his table, so he didn't think he needed to mention it. Unless she was blind, she couldn't miss the large sign hanging off the end of the table that advertised:

Alderaanian Prefect Station
Zack Dill: 5th Year Prefect
[picture of the planet Alderaan]
Disturb only if you need help.

He'd put a lot of work into that sign. After he'd finished with his first day of classes, he'd begun trying to make a professional looking placard. It had been nearly midnight before he was satisfied with his result.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
