Looking to protect myself by Paul Tarwater

So he'd failed. Paul had failed in getting himself expelled, not that he really tried. He puposefully missed classes, but was that even good enough trying? But now, Paul had to deal with seeing Sierra next year. Life at Sonora was going to be hell with Sierra there, and Paul would need protection from her. Even if his sister was younger, she was a lot crueler. Paul didn't want to deal with it. Which was why he'd come from the Aladren common room (the only place he'd be able to find snctuary next year, unless Cissy got in Aladren) to find some spells he could use to protect him self.

The book titles he picked out were self explanitory. Simple Counter Curses and Protecting Yourself Aganst Curses, Jinxes, and Hexes as well as Shielding Spells: Quick and Easy and other books with similar titles. Cissy was good with curses, hexes, and jinxes. A little above average for her age, having used their father's wand without permission and pacticing on the Tarwaters' cat. The poor cat was miserable and tired and took on extra legs, going blind, no tail, and rainbow colored fur. As well as an immunity to most small spells. Sierra would only practice her most prank-like hexes on Paul when he made her angry, so their parents wouldn't suspect too much (even though the cat looked like it went through hell...).

And this was the way it was probably going to be in school next year. The curses would be saved on her animal subjects, along with her untested ones. The spells she was trying to make herself. But the jinxes and hexes would be tried on him when he least expected it. So Paul would fight back, without technically fighting back. Basically, he would block the spell or turn it on Sierra and run away to a crowded place. Where Cissy never acted.

The book open was called Quick to Use: Counterjinxes for the Slow. It was very useful and Paul was having a hard time writing all these counterjinxes in the blank book he had. The blank book he would have to hide from Cissy and his parents when he got home. So he could catch Cissy by surprise and keep it all from his parents, who had enough problems as it was. Right now Paul was writing about a counterjinx that absorbed the jinx and throw it back three-fold. That was a keeper. The black haired boy pressed his quill into the ink and began to write, before something hit his chair, causing the ink to smear over the last ten counters he'd written down.

Angrily, Paul turned to whoever hit him. "Watch where you're going!" he hissed. "You just made me lose my work!" Stupid people.\n\n

I would ask who, but you already answered by Danae Dupree

She had come to the library to find a spell that would be perfect to practice on Caedence. She had spent enough time with that girl in DADA and had managed to learn only one thing. She couldn't stand the girl. Her lip curled into a slight sneer at the thought of her. Sometimes, she wished she could say what she really thought instead of having to pretend to be nice.

Well, a spell would at least be amusing and she doubted her roommate would ever suspect her. Afterall, Danae was considered to be sweet. Looking at the various volumes on the shelves, she grabbed quite a few, all of which looked vastly interesting. Arms loaded, she hurried to find an isolated table. Unfortunately, this unbalanced the bag from her shoulder causing it to accidently hit another student.

Quickly, the boy turned around and hissed at her, 'Watch where you're going! You just made me lose my work!'

Charged with dislike of Caedence and tired of always being nice to people, Danae allowed her true nature to show through, "I was watching where I was going. So sorry that my bag accidently hit you."

Her dark blue eyes glared at him, practically throwing swords towards his head. Chestnut brown hair fell in frames around her face that was normally rather pretty when it wasn't distorted in anger. Stupid guys.\n\n

Always the same person by Paul

Of course, the one who mouthed off. Paul had to get hit by that kind of person. Well, at least it was better than the "super nice" yet actually self-centered person who would tell him how mean he was and all that other crap. But still, the older girl annoyed him, and Paul would have rather had the meek person who just nodded and walked away hit him. There were a lot of people.

"Then maybe next time, you should watch where your bag is going. If you had, this accident could have been avoided, and I might still have useful notes," Paul found himself growling. Of those last ten spells counters, four of them had been extremely useful. And now he had lost them. And Paul wasn't going to flip through all of these books again to look for the stupid things.

Paul lifted his ink covered paper carefully, so not to ruin his other notes and crumpled it up. He ignored the dark ink covering his fingers as he tossed the paper ball on the ground. Paul had hald a mind to throw it at the girl's back, but he didn't.

Paul sent his own glare at her. Blue eyes on blue eyes. Joy. His hands had ink dripping off of them, Paul just flicked then after the girl. People were so annoying.\n\n

Should it be someone else? by Danae

OOC: She's not older. She's a Firstie.

BIC:

Danae raised a single eyebrow when the boy told her that she should watch her bag. Honestly, how hard was it to understand that it was an accident and they happened regardless of how much you tried to avoid them.

She gave a loud sigh before saying anything. She counted down in her head to try and keep her anger in check. She kept telling herself that she was supposed to act like a nice person. She really had to learn to handle people like this.

She allowed her facial expression to soften to one that tried to look sincerely sorry that it had happened.

"I'm sorry that I wasn't more careful with my bag," Danae managed in an apologetic voice. "Is there anything that I can do to make it up to you?"

She felt like she was going to be nauseated at being that considerate of someone, but maybe it would pay off. Maybe he would prove to be someone useful.\n\n

No one else can do it that way by Paul

OOC: Oh. I was looking at the second year Aladren Dupree, sorry...

BIC: Paul sighed, calming down a little after he wiped the excess ink on his black shirt, under the robes he was wearing. This didn't really matter. His top was black as was the ink, no one would see it. Paul was still a little upset over losing his work, but he did have other notebook pages spared from his ink burst. He could still protect himself against Cissy.

And at least the girl wasn't going on at him. She actually seemed to be trying to avoid conflict. Good, since Paul couldn't help but start conflict even if he tried to stop. Paul shrugged and leaned back. He was calmer now, so he was able to talk a little more rationally.

"No, it's fine. I have other pages I could work off of," he muttered, trying to be nicer. This was hard for Paul. But looking at his empty ink bottle he saw what he needed. "Do you have any extra ink in that huge bag," he asked, trying not to make the word "huge bag" sound mean or suggesting to what had just happened. So since he tried, it only came out a little cruelly. Not too noticable.\n\n

You could always be surprised by Danae

The good news was that he had calmed down. The bad news was now she could study his features, she could see he was rather handsome. Oh, dear.

She could feel a funny nervous type feeling in the pit of her stomach. Yes, very dreadful, indeed. She decided this was the drawback of being eleven years old. Guys made fluttery feelings, especially cute ones.

Trying to ignore it, she concentrated on the ink that was spilled on the paper, nearly missing what he said next. She smirked slightly at the slightly sarcastic comment about her bag. Decidedly, she took a seat opposite him and placed her bag on the next chair. Shuffling through it she produced a small bottle of black ink.

She placed it on the table in front of him with only two words spoken, "Danae Dupree."

Surprises aren't my thing by Paul

Paul gave the girl a confused look when she seemed to stare at him for a while. He almost opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, but he stopped himself again. Paul didn't care for the answer he would get to that question, really it wasn't something he wanted. Instead Paul shut his mouth and brought his hand to his black hair.

It was a habit to touch his head when he was confused or nervous or not really thinking. But once he realized he was doing it, Paul pulled away immediately and looked at his fingers. The ink was dry, but still. Ink in your hair was nasty. And Paul had already taken a shower this morning, he didn't want to do so again and waste his time.

Paul noticed the girl had set the ink bottle on the table, Paul smiled and reached for it.

"Danae Dupree."

Her name, obviously. Paul pulled the new ink closer, and began to open it. When the strong sent of ink reached his nose, Paul smirked, another reaction. "Paul Tarwater," he said, pushing the ink a bit further from him.\n\n

Not really mine either by Danae

Since she wasn't leaving with her ink and she didn't want to sit there and do nothing, she started going through the books she had grabbed. She would find the perfect spell to use on Caedence, but what kind of spell?

She thumbed through one of the books, A Thousand Ways to Annoy Your Roommate. Did she want to stick her sheets together? Or what about turning her hair orange? No, no, none of these would really do.

She had been so engrossed in the book that she had almost forgotten that Paul was there. She looked over at him over her book, wondering what he had done before.

"So, what is it that you're working on that's so important?" She asked in a curious tone.\n\n

Does anyone, really? by Paul

So Danae sat down with him and thumbed through her own book. Paul noticed the title, it being something about annoying a roommate. Well, her roommate must be annoying. That was his best conclusion for the book. Well, it looked like she would be staying here (much to Paul's discomfort), so Paul just went back to his own work, trying to ignore the girl near him.

In the counterspells book, Paul noted off a very good counter. At least in his mind. It included a short spoken spell and a type of vine placed anywhere on the body. After the spell is said, a sort of protective magical wall stops most simpler spells from entering. The wall stays up until the vine is taken from the body, and the wall isn't noticable at all. It wouold simply look like the body absorbed the spell. Hm, it was a bit advanced, but Paul jotted it down anyway to learn. Sounded useful.

Halfway through this, Danae decided to talk again. Dang, couldn't Paul just get to his work. But whatever, he would answer. But he didn't look up while doing so. And the answer was pretty short and simple. "Its for protection." \n\n
