Someone pay attention to me!!! by Tony the plant

"Now," Tony said with a grunt as he shoved his fellow Venus fly trap to the forefront of the plant-lined hall, "stay right here babe, and guard this spot for me." She never responded to his requests, not even after growing a couple feet, but he knew she would follow his orders and stay put. Gladys was quite the loyal girlfriend when it came to not moving. "Alright, see ya later."

Teetering his pot from side to side, Tony ventured out into the crowded hall, overgrown by his enemy...palm trees. Ever since the beginning of term, he'd inched further and further from the hall though always returning to his station in fear of palm tree take over...or something worse. But things were so dull here compared to the rest of the school and after his meeting with Bulla, his bravery had nearly doubled. The outdoors, however, was still off limits. He'd heard stories about very happy potted plants being rooted after going outside.

Today, he wasn't sure where he would go, but he knew it would be some place far away from his hall. The air was wet, the heat thick, and the hall like a jungle all of which added up to a rather stifling setting, even for a plant. He barely had any breathing room any longer, and it was becoming difficult to do his job with all the tall plants that had outgrown him. Even more difficult was it to help the headmistress find her office, which she seemed to lose track of on a more frequent basis every day. This was his break...despite not technically having a break.

Through the corridors he proceeded, and up a set of stairs which took a great deal of hopping to overcome. Around another bend and past a classroom that appeared to be empty, probably because it was the weekend. No one seemed to be around to pay attention to the large, green plant with a Bronx accent, something he was rather disappointed about. He even tried a couple doors, leading to what he wasn't sure, but every time he turned the handle of one with his leafy arm, it was locked. And the only one that wasn't locked required a great deal of time to open.

Library doors are generally not the kind with knobs or handles, but rather have to be pushed to be opened. Tony had no problem with the pushing part of the entrance, it was the entering after the pushing that was difficult. He wasn't exactly a race horse when it came to moving, more like a sloth unless he used his roots to help him, and that was tiresome. It took him three tries, but finally he made it in with only a slightly battered nose that had been smashed between the doors a couple times, but it was worth it.

The place was nice as far as rooms go. Really was a different kind of place, with all the shelves and those...those things on the shelves. What was growing up there? He hopped over to the nearest shelf and ran his the tip of his leaf over the brightly colored objects. A weird kind of plant they were, nothing he'd seen before with their rectangle kind of shape and various sizes. Some of them had string tassels coming out of the top, some were injured, torn, and looked as though they'd seen better days, and most had squiggly lines on them, but what they were he didn't know. He felt around one, brushing his leaf over the dip at the top and then along the hard cover with the gold symbols.

Yeah, this was his kind of room, and these plants were much more polite than palm trees. At least they didn't steal his air.

Re: Someone pay attention to me!!! by Jen Knoll

Jen entered the library looking for her two friends, Mia and Tori. She hadn't seen them in a while since school started. Dissapointed in not seeing them she started to look at the library books no the shelves, seeing if she could find anything interesting. "Whats this?" She said to herself, and pulled out a plant that was next to the one of the books. "How did you get in the library? Aren't you supposed to be in the gardens?" she asked.\n\n

Eek! Not the gardens! by Tony

OOC: Alright, two things. First, the posting minimum is two paragraphs, which is about eight to ten lines when viewed. You can imagine my disappointment when I spent all that time writing a post that turned out to be over six-hundred words only to receive an eighty-two word reply. Secondly, I'm a tad confused by your post. Is she trying to pick up Tony, because he would never fit on a shelf? He's a large venus fly trap, his girlfriend herself of the same variety has grown a couple feet recently, so he would be at least that tall. He's around 5 feet to be specific. Or you could be making reference to the fact that he thinks the books are plants as he said there is something growing on them, however; I thought I made it clear that they are not actual plants. Sorry if it was ambiguous, but please, pay more attention. Anyway, I'll try to work with what you gave me.

BIC:

Startled by the sound of a girl's voice nearby, Tony tipped the rectangle, plant thing off the shelf with a swoop of his long, leafy arm. It rebounded off the rim of his pot and landed soundly on the ground, the hard cover spread out with the softer white middle facing down. He wasn't sure if he should be more shocked that she asked whether he of all plants should be in the gardens or the fact that he just uprooted one of his species. Tony darted his beady, black eyes between the girl and the blue, most likely dead plant on the floor. Maybe no one had heard that there was a plant that guarded the headmistress' office and his name was Tony, though he couldn't understand why this wasn't common knowledge. More than happily, he stopped any students that might walk down that hall if only to have something to do, if not for his job's sake.

"G-gardens?" he stuttered, barely able to say the word at the thought of being a lowly, rooted plant. "No, you kiddin' me? You wouldn't catch me near that place!" His voice was rough, quite like the villains in the old mobster films, the kind you wouldn't like to meet in a dark alley. Not remembering much of his history before moving to Sonora, Tony wasn't sure how he had developed such an accent, but it seemed effective when dealing with these kids.

Tony glanced down at the blue object on the floor once again. He felt rather sorry for the little guy, maybe he wasn't a lost cause just yet. "Hey, kid," he began, pointing to the book that had fallen on the floor, "could you pick up that plant for me? He's not lookin' so good outside his home and all."\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

OCC: You actually counted the words...oook then...

Jen, not expecting the plant to talk back, looked confused. "You just talked...and you have a bronx accent!" she still hadn't gotten quite used to things at Sonora, since she lived like a muggle back home. She then looked at the book on the ground that the plant was calling a "plant". She picked it up and gave it to him.

"This isn't a plant, it's a book. You know, the things with writing inside that you read." Jen noticed a set of prickley teeth stemming from the plant. "You must be a venus fly trap!" Without realizing how rude it was, Jen took the book from the plant and sat down in a chair. She then began flipping through its pages. "Anyway, I've always wondered...how do flys taste?" she asked.\n\n

a plant in a library can lead to no good by Jenna Howard

Jenna could not believe it. She had always done well in Potions; it was definitely her best subject. But this time, this time she had definitely been beat. It seemed as if she had picked up her first challenging book on Potions.

Well, technically it was more a biography than a book of potion recipes. It was focused on the life and theories of Paracelsus, a famous yet secretive alchemist from hundreds of years ago. The old gray book proved to have vocabulary too advanced for her understanding, and some concepts she could not grasp, either. She made her way back to the library with the book, intending on returning it. It was definitely a book she'd have to tackle later on in her education.

Three steps into the library, she came to a realization. She didn't know where to check in the books for return. Was she supposed to simply put it back where she found it, or was there a special book return area? It sounded pretty stupid that she had never thought of it before, but it just never seemed to come up.

"Okay," she muttered to herself, "I need to find people. People might know what you are supposed to do with books to return." With that brilliant conclusion, she was off on her search for civilization.

"Hello Jen, hey Tony," she said, catching a bit of their conversation as she walked by. A second later she stopped short. Tony? Tony, the guard plant? What in Merlin's name was he doing here, especially in a library of all places? A library was a place filled with paper; paper came from trees, which were plants. This was like a cow walking into a meat storage, or something. And from the sentence or two she had heard, Tony didn't know that, and Jen seemed to be on the verge of telling him. That probably would lead to no good.

She turned herself around, partly out of curiosity, partially because she still needed help returning the book she carried in her arms.

"Well, hey," she said, trying to steer them away from the topic of books, even if they were surrounded by them, "Tony, what are you doing away from the Headmistress's office?"\n\n

Scrappy the Prairie Elf

what about a prairie elf? by Scrappy the Prairie Elf

The diminutive escapee from the kitchens sculked around warily, big eyes wide and glancing every which way. He didn't want Grandmother Tuppy to discover he had run off again... or even his cousin, Scurry. Scurry had a terrible habit of sticking his long nose where it was very much not wanted, and it always seemed to lead to Scrappy having to go back.

He crept along the halls, not bothering to take advantage of the elf tunnels which crisscrossed the school, so as to give himself a better chance of eluding the notice of his relatives. He had another reason too... He lifted his nose and sniffed audibly. There was a tang, a scent in the air which told him he was close. Checking his position again, he slid along the hall a little further until he reached a door and stopped to test the air again.

Yes... yes, she was in there. The smell was unmistakable. Slowly, cautiously (if there was one thing he had learned in his last few expeditions it was that lack of caution led to Scurry or another elf dragging him back to the kitchens - or in Scurry's case to the door of the kitchens and no further - and booting him over to Grandmother Tuppy. Having to listen to her wailing was a punishment that defied even prairie elf conventions) he poked his first his nose, then the rest of his head around ther door. His ears twitched, trying to aid his nose in locating his quarry and something else too. Something that smelled of green and vegetable, yet sounded all hustle and bustle.

They weren't in view though, so he slipped the rest of the way through the doors into the room and with a distasteful look at the well dusted shelves crept on until... there she was. A feral little grin lit up his face, and with barely a sound, Scrappy launched across the room, sent her armful of books flying and latched onto her arm firmly with his teeth.\n\n

Does the past always have to come back to haunt you? by Jenna Howard

OOC: The author couldn't reply right away because the first few times she read Scrappy's post, she laughed. Weird author...

BIC: Jenna jumped and gave a small yelp in shock. Her book flew from her arms, and a sudden pain in her right arm. What in Merlin's name was going on here? She turned her head to see the cause of her pain. She grimaced when she saw him. The Headmistress had obviously done nothing about him last year.

Tears formed on her eyelashes- oh, how it hurt! She had to get him off of her, anything, in any way, she had to get him off of her. If she tried to push him off with physical force, it might not work, and he might just bite in harder. That would only make matters even worse. Wait a minute, she was a witch, wasn't she? She could use magic against him! Of course, spells weren't her greatest strength, but that didn't matter, it was all she had to defend herself.

Acting on this impulse, she reached for her wand with her left hand. It felt awkward in her hand, seeing as she usually used her right hand for everything. She fumbled awhile with the wand, trying to get a good grip on it as she aimed it at the elf.

"F-f-flipendo," she muttered the first spell that came to mind. A feeble shot of light shot out of her wand. Great, she thought to herself, I'm never going to get him off of me.

She raised her wand at him again, and tried it this time with a firmer voice, "Flipendo!" This time a great shot of light came out, greater than she had ever produced. She looked at her wand with surprise, apparently she was a southpaw when it came to spells.

Then doubt hit her. Was she going to get in trouble for using magic on a school prairie elf? Knowing her luck, the answer was yes, probably. But it had attacked her unprovoked, and she was just defending herself! Jennifer and Tony had witnessed it, too. Surely that should count for something.

She put the wand back in her pocket, backing away from the elf, eyes full of fear. She didn't want to use a spell on him again if she didn't have to. But she was still afraid he might try something.

She clutched the wound with her left hand, feeling warm liquid slowly trickle out. Without looking she could tell it was blood. She turned to look at Tony and Jennifer, her eyes still filled with fear, and gave a small mutter, "Help me."\n\n

*growl* by Tony

Tony had been quite happy when the one girl approached him, even if she insisted the plant wasn't a plant when it definitely had a plant kinda smell to it. He'd been even more elated when the student he'd met last year in his hall walked up, and he was quite willing to answer their questions to keep them here. It wasn't every day that someone showed an interest in the lowly fly trap, especially to the point of asking about flies...wonderful, tasty flies. But then, something strange happened, more strange than a fly trap walking into a large, shelf-lined room.

It took Tony a moment to realize exactly what was going on when he saw the creature run out of wherever it was hiding. He'd thought it was about to clean up some spot of dirt they'd created on the floor, or run off to a new hiding place to punish itself for being seen. So when it instead took a good bite out of the kid's arm, he only had one thing to say...

"Hey!! Whaddya think you'se doin'?!"

Tony shuffled forward a step with the plant/book held up and ready to beat the living daylights out of the elf. No wonder he didn't trust them....they were completely nuts! What kind of screwed up little runts were these to cower from him one moment, and go off attacking students the next. He wouldn't let another elf walk down his hall, that was for sure. Not anywhere near the headmistress.

As he brought the book wrapped tightly in his leaf down, however, the kid brought out her wand and had the elf thrown off her within a matter of seconds. Tony dropped the book to the floor and glared at the runt, leaning menacingly forward with his large mouth open just enough to prove he could fit a prarie elf inside. He gave a low growl of warning, knowing that most elves, despite this one being weird, were afraid of him, or at least seemed to be.\n\n

oooh!! look at the big, bad weed!! by Scrappy

Scrappy hit the ground hard, but wasn't phased in the least. He sprung to his feet again, all set to leap back on the offensive - who did this student think she was? Or for that matter, who did she think she was dealing with? - when of all things a giant talking vegetable decided to butt in.

The origin of the smells and sounds he had come across before locating his quarry at once became clear, and knowing that she couldn't get away without him being able to track her back down (it was simple... so long as he wasn't thwarted... again).

He squared off, making sure that his feet were planted firmly on the ground as he faced the celery stick. He didn't move at first, as it leaned down towards him except to yawn excessively when it opened its maw in what was presumably a threatening way. Apparently this wasn't enough for the cucumber. It growled. Apparently it thought that it was dealing with an ordinary everyday prairie elf.

Scrappy growled right on back and leapt forward to take a chunk out of the nearest leaf with his teeth. Dropping back to the ground, he spat it out derisively, lingered just long enough to prove that he wasn't leaving because he was scared, then got the hell out of there.

There would be other opportunities. Ones with fewer bystanders about, and less mobile broccoli.\n\n

At least he doesn't eat people by Jenna Howard

Jenna clutched the part of her arm that had been injured, biting her lip. Her arm hurt a lot, and it only increased her disliking towards elves of all kinds. It seemed as if they were all out to get her, sometimes. Jenna inwardly chuckled at how paranoid the statement sounded in her mind. But just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you,' she thought to herself.

Jenna turned to Tony, looking at the leaf that had a large bite out of it. If she thought her injury was bad, it was probably nothing to the pain Tony had. Did plants feel pain? She wasn't too sure, especially about talking plants. Either way, the leaf would have to be amputated. From the little she knew about gardening, she knew dead leaves had to be taken off so that more water would go to the healthier leaves. She figured Tony might not be too happy about that, even if it was only one leaf.

"Hey, are you okay? By the way, thanks, Tony," she said , "That elf's been out to get me since last year. I tried to tell the Headmistress about it, I guess it slipped her mind." Jenna had to admit that having such a forgetful Headmistress was very annoying. Jenna didn't know how to convey the message to her that something was very wrong with one of the prairie elves. And she didn't want to get her father involved in this, no matter what. She would fight her own battles, thank you very much.

Jenna tried to remember why she came here in the first place. Oh yes, she wanted to return the book. She reached out for it with her left hand, but noticed a little blood on her fingers. She was definitely not going to give in a book with blood on it. And it hurt too much to move her other arm, let alone carry a heavy book.

"Hey Jen?" asked Jenna, "Would you mind putting that book back on one of the shelves for me? I'm sure the librarian could put it in its rightful place later."\n\n

And I don't eat plants either!! by Tony

His leaf! It was ripped!! Tony was completely beside himself, holding up the shred of an arm he now had and gaping at the damage. Who would have thought? A prairie elf! They were supposed to be the rats of Sonora that cowered under his presence, the twerps he could scare with only a menacing shuffle forward. And this one...he'd couldn't even remember being attacked on the job, much less by a prairie elf. Though he technically wasn't "on the job" being as far away from his quiet hall as he was, which was not good for the sake of the headmistress. The savage, knowing he was away from his station, would probably go after her next!

Tony knew he should probably go back now, but he couldn't take his eyes off his dead leaf. He shook it, testing its mobility and it responded with a feeble wobble releasing a few drops of chlorophyll onto the library floor. The sight of this practically sent him into a fit of terror, which he barely withheld only giving way to soft yelp of alarm.

He'd entirely forgotten about the kid's injuries only just registering her question of how he was. The bottom half of his large oval shaped head trembled as he tried to respond. "Will...will it grow back?" Tony squeaked as he turned to look at the girl. "I mean, it'll grow back, right?" If it didn't...what was the use of a hall guard that only had one good arm? He'd be canned for sure....or even worse, planted in the garden. He shuddered at that dreadful thought.
