staking claim to my table by Zack Dill

Over the last year, Zack Dill had become very fond of one table in particular in the library. It was next to a window that looked out over the hedge maze, and he took entirely too much pleasure in watching people trying to find their way out and Cackling Dude (as some people had taken to calling the groundskeeper, probably because he occassionally cackled to himself as he watched the elves work) was always good for a moment of entertainment.

But now it was a new year and the new kids didn't know which table was Zack's. So he arrived early to stake his claim. He slung his battered red bookbag by the two shoulderstraps over the back of his chair, and removed three notebooks from it to toss them onto the tabletop. Zack stepped back to appraise this bit of handiwork, and nodded to himself in satisfaction. His table looked suitably occupied.

Now, the dark-haired second year could go get some books without risking his spot. The Great Maker knew he wouldn't be able to intimidate his way into getting it back if someone else had grabbed it first. While he was grateful for the two inches he'd grown since last year, he still couldn't help but wonder if there were even any first years shorter than his four feet five inches.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

a place to sit by Makani Yarrow

Makani had wandered into the library in the hopes of finding a spot in this desert school where he might feel comfortable. The dyness of the place left him feeling rather uncomfortable. Back home he was used the heat for sure, but not the dryness. He wished that there was an ocean near by. He wanted so badly to go surfing, or just touch water that hadn't come out of a tap.

Makani loved books almost as much as he loved the water and so decided that the library would be a good place to go. He wandered up and down the aisles, amazed at the number of books that were packed on to shelves. he pulled out a book on basic household charms and began reading it. Makani would read anything, even books on house work.

With his nose shoved into the book, Makani made his way over to the section of the library that was laid out with tables for studying and reading. Had he been paying attention, Makani would have noticed that the table he had picked was covered with another student's work. He took no notice and sank down into a chair and continued to read.\n\n

Mine mine mine mine mine by Zack Dill

Zack returned to his table carrying a stack of three books all on Transfiguration. Professor Reiner was his favourite professor, and so he intended to be well ahead of the rest of the class even before their first lesson.

Stopping short when he came within sight of his table, he cursed (in Kling-on, so he wouldn't get in trouble) under his breath. Someone else was sitting there. Not in his chair, but at his table. Stupid disrespectful firsties. First the ones in his commonroom called him inept, and now this one took his table.

Grumbling to himself, he marched toward the kid, passed the kid, and dumped his stack loudly onto his table. He winced as the force of the heavy books against the wooden surface rattled his window and hoped he hadn't disturbed the librarian.

With a sour look at the firstie, he wordlessly climbed (and sadly, yes, he was short enough that he still had to climb into the bloody chairs) into his own seat and began opening all three books to the first chapter. He wasn't going to send the kid away, but neither was he going to share table space. He'd claimed it first.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Well Pardon ME. by Makani

Makani was very wrapped up in his book so and didn't notice when the other boy came back to the table. He did notice howevere when he slammed all of his books down on to the table. Makani jumped in surprise and then glared at the other boy who was slightly shorter than him.

When he proceeded to lay his books across the table, all three of them, Makani became a little annoyed. There was no need to be rude. If he was upset by him being here then why hadn't he said somthing? Makani wasn't using the table really so he did nothing but glare at the other boy. He didn't recognize him, but then again, Makani didn't recognize anyone. He rather wished that there were some girls around. They were much less hostile. And Makani just didn't like other boys.

Especially not rude ones. Feeling as though he ought to say something, Makani simply asked, "Is there a problem?'\n\n

Amnesty Pending by Zack

Zack looked over at the firstie (who was, disappointingly but not surprisingly, taller than him) with both eyebrows raised, as if he was surprised that he was being addressed in such a manner. "No, no problem," he stated in his library voice, gesturing at the other tables, some of which were unoccupied, "it's free seating wherever."

Opening one of his notebooks to a blank page while he paused momentarily for effect, he waited a moment, then looked back at the kid. "I'm just a little territorial about this spot." He tapped his pointer finger on the table directly in front of him for emphasis. "Homo Sapien Sapiens are actually one of the most territorial species on the planet." He wasn't a hundred percent sure of that fact, but it sounded good and he could support the opinion with some fairly sound evidence. He didn't know of any other creature that had land deeds or used locks.

Shifting the transfiguration book that most encroached on the other kid's space a little closer to himself, he added, "That said, I can share the table. Is that book going to bother you there?"\n\n

Breaking Up The Tension by Juliet Lee

Juliet wasn't the biggest fan of libraries. She was more of an outdoors type of girl. If she ever read a book, it would be safe on the tallest branch of tree instead of inside an enclosed, stuffy area like a library. However, she wanted to find a quiet area to gather her thoughts. In a library, people were required to be silent so she was more likely to have peace here than if she was outside where everyone was chatting and running around.

However, that wasn't the case today because the entire library was occupied. Juliet's piercing grey eyes scanned over the area. Every single seat and couch was taken. Merlin. In New York, there was always a lack of people in libraries. Juliet supposed Arizona was different.

Unforunately for her, the only table where there was a free seat was occupied by two boys. One looked older than her and the other looked about her age. The latter was now staring daggers at the older boy and Juliet could practically feel the tension in the air.

Now, normally, Juliet wouldn't have sat down with them if her life depended on it. She was, in general, a very shy girl and the very sight of an angry person would have made her run for the hills. But she was desperate for some time to think. Being away from home was making her depressed and she needed to just sit down and relax. So, acting on a bout of courage and spontaneity she didn't know she possessed, Juliet slowly walked over to the table.

"U-Um...is this seat taken?" She asked meekly, her pale skin turning even paler, making her look practically translucent. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

S'alright by Makani

Makani looked at the boy with a from still on his face. "Sorry," he replied, "I wasn't really paying attention when I sat down so I didn't notice your stuff."

He hadn't meant any harm by sitting down. Makani hadn't done anything wrong and hadn't forgotten the boy's initital reaction. He nodded mutely as the boy talked about homo sapiens. He could understand being territorial, but about a table? In a library that was used by the whole school? That seemed odd. Makani shrugged his shoulders and turned back to his book.

After a moment he looked back up and said, "No that's fine. I'm not really using the table. But if this table is so special would you rather I moved?"\n\n

A saving grace by Makani

((ooc: sorry! I didn't see your post! no worries!))

Makani looked up as a girl approached the table. She was rather pale and looked very nervous. He supposed he couldn't blame her. It was very apparent that he wan't getting on well with the other boy seated at the table. Makani gave the boy one last glare before turning back to the girl. As he glared he noticed for the first time that the boy was in his own house. "How wonderful" he thought to himself.

"Sure you can sit here. I mean it's all right with me, but you should probably check with him first. Apparently he's very territorial."

Makani said this with a bit of a sneer and was slightly ruder than was necessary, but the boy had gotten on his nerves and he wasn't about to hide it.\n\n

Where? *looks around frantically* by Juliet Lee

Juliet flinched at the younger boy's harsh tone. Obviously, the second year (at least, she THOUGHT he was a second year; he didn't look THAT much older) had done something to infuriate him. She thought if he glared hard enough he could burn a hole right through the second year's chest.

"Um...I suppose if this is a b-bad time, I could leave..."

Argh! This was so frustrating. All she had wanted was to piece together the tiny and jumbled fragments of thought in her mind. She didn't ask for a staring contest between two angry males. Juliet sighed softly and rubbed her temples, trying to alleviate the headache that was starting to form right between her eyes.

She suddenly noticed that she was being extremely rude by just standing in front of the two students and not saying anything. Not wanting to cause any more anger, she quickly tried to salvage her manners.

"I'm sorry if I bothered you. My name is Juliet Lee, Teppenpaw."\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

reluctant invitation by Zack Dill

OOC: Zack's actually extremely short for his age - less than four and a half feet tall - which probably wouldn't lead you to assume he was older since height is the greatest difference between the appearances of 11 and 12 year olds; Zack, at least, hasn't shown any signs of puberty at all yet. Also, I did mention there were empty spots elsewhere in my second post, but I'm willing to overlook that. Maybe there was a freakish rush on the remaining tables while Zack and Makani were having their pissing contest. Anyway, BIC:

Zack rolled his eyes and sighed as he was made out to be the aggressive control freak. He'd tried to make up for his initial testiness. Well, the impression was only half wrong. Well, okay, maybe he was a little passive agressive, but not really agressive.

"Zack Dill, second year, in Alderaan," he grimaced, catching his habitual mistake, as usual, a second too late, "er, Aladren." He waved to the empty chair diagonal from him (the one across from him had no table space that wasn't covered with transfiguration books, and he was already getting cramped - since when were so many people interested in coming to the library even before lessons formally began?) "Go ahead, I only bite if you touch my books."

Vaguely, he wondered if the two firsties would take his metaphorical idiom, which he had delivered in a grouchy deadpan, as a literal threat and amused himself with the probability that they would. Okay, he was not doing so well on the first impressions this year, but he didn't really need friends in the younger grade, did he? No, he did not.

For a moment, he entertained the notion of becoming a school bully, but then he returned to reality when he remembered nobody was afraid of boys who didn't even stand four and a half feet tall. Besides, Sonora didn't even have lockers, so where was the fun in being a bully if you didn't have lockers to shove people inside (at least, given the number of times he saw the inside of his sixth grade locker, he assumed this was a terribly fun part of being a bully)? Oh, well, it had been a nice fantasy while it lasted.\n\n

Between a Rock and a Hard Place by Juliet Lee

Juliet nervously accepted Zack Dill's curt invitation to sit at their table, which was littered with textbooks and studying material. She flicked her eyes across the library again, hoping that someone had left their seat in the small amount of time that had passed. No such luck. Sighing inwardly, Juliet slowly sank into the chair that Zack had indicated with his hand.

"Go ahead, I only bite if you touch my books."

Well, that was reassuring. Startled a bit at the bitter remark, Juliet could only nod in response. She turned to the first year that sat next to her. It was obvious that she wouldn't be able to think with all the tension surrounding the area. She never worked well under pressure.

Juliet was very hesitant to speak to the first year since he didn't look to be in the best of moods. But now that she had sat down, she didn't want to be rude and suddenly leave. It would probably further aggravate the two males, which was definitely not her intention. So she decided that small talk would be the best approach.

"So...erm...w-what are you reading?"

What is this called... by Makani

Makani heard what Juliet said and looked up from his book. He closed it and looked at the cover. "Well, to be honest with you I hadn't looked at the title. It's on household spells, Cleaning with Charm By Caroline Swab. I just randomly picked something up off one of the shelves. I'm Makani by the way. Makani Yarrow."

He felt much better about talking to her that he did Zack. At least she wasn't rude. And she wasn't male, which was always a plus in Makani's book.\n\n

Cleaning books? Er...Interesting choice by Juliet Lee

"Well, to be honest with you I hadn't looked at the title. It's on household spells, Cleaning with Charm By Caroline Swab. I just randomly picked something up off one of the shelves. I'm Makani by the way. Makani Yarrow."

The pleasant small talk was helping to eliminate the tension that was currently suffocating Juliet. She relaxed a bit more and smiled weakly at Makani. He seemed nice enough.

"Nice to meet you. What house are you in? Are you in Teppenpaw too?"

She decided that perhaps reading a book would help her to calm down. Usually, she would grab a book and read it on her favorite apple tree in Central Park. But, at the moment, sitting with Makani and Zack would have to do. She randomly snatched a book from the pile and looked at the title. \r\n\r\n'The Lord of the Rings.'\r\n\r\n"Oh wow!" she said. "I can't believe they have one of my favourite books." \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Miss Lee,
PLEASE! This is a school library, for ELEVEN year olds! There would be no such book available, otherwise the people running the school would be in serious trouble. For all you may think it is humourous to have your character stumble across something 'embarrassing' like that, it is entirely inappropriate and unrealistic. Please think more carefully about the kinds of materials the library is likely to deem appropriate for the age group before making your character's reading choices in future.

*mutters* Such filth in my library... Will not have it... \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Sorry for tainting the sanctity of your library with my dirty, little mind. Excuse me while I get it out of the gutters. *pulls mind out of gutters*

I'll just say that it was a Lord of the Rings book. I think Zack Dill is interested in Tolkien. And I'll say "Oh wow! I can't believe they have one of my favorite books!" instead of squeaking and dropping the book like a Catholic school girl.

Juliet, you are an idiot.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

There's nothing wrong with having a dirty mind (*is sure most of the faculty will back him up on that... snickers*) it's just knowing when and where to put it into practice....

If you want to write that out the alterations, I can edit them into the post. I think that might be appreciated, as there are some fairly young RPers here. \n\n
