Elizabeth walked into the library, someplace she hadn't been for a while. She noticed some other people there, but she paid them little mind as she slipped quickly into one of the secluded shelves. Try to make yourself blend in... she thought to herself.
Okay, so she was officially going the "pureblood" route, as she liked to call it. Elizabeth owed it to her family to uphold their honor. Afterall, how bad could being the person she was 'supposed to be' actually be? Elizabeth pushed a raven colored piece of wispy hair from her face, and tucked it carefully behind her ear.
She'd come to the library to read up on the historical origins in the whole "blood" battle. If she was going to go with the rest of the pureblood community, she'd better know exactly what that entailed. Elizabeth had very limited knowledge as to what it was all about, considering since she was six her Aunt Rose and Uncle William had raised Elizabeth and her two older brothers. Elizabeth had attended her aunt and uncle's parties, instead of her own parents', so it had been five years since she'd been at a party that was truly her own.
Elizabeth grabbed a book from the shelf and found a high backed chair in the back of the library, away from everyonelse \n\n
One would think that after hours of dancing lessons, entire tutoring sessions on grace, poise, and elegance, that Ty would not be an utter klutz. Unfortunetly, it seemed that she would be forever tripping over anything less flat then a sheet of paper that happened to be near her feet.
Thus it was that Ty found herself in the library, skimming it for possible photograph opportunities (as usual, her camera hung around her neck). It was a pity that she was so immersed in this activity that she didn't notice a book lying on the floor. With elegance (assuming 'elegance means 'ungainliness, which it does not), she managed to trip over it, landing with a thud, frizzy hair flying everywhere, at a girl's feet and knocking into the book the girl was holding with enough force to send it flying. With an expression that clearly said 'this happens all the time, she checked her camera for damage then rose. "I'm so sorry about that!", she exclaimed. \n\n
She let a small gasp escape her as her book was completely knocked from her hands. Elizabeth ignored the book momentarily and looked up at the girl who had just crashed into her. She surveyed her quickly, and upon feeling distantly familiar with her face, Elizabeth stood.
"It's quite alright, are you okay?" she looked the girl over, trying to conjure up a sufficient smile. "I'm Elizabeth Lavine, by the way."
Her sapphire eyes flashed as she brought forth a true grin. She extended her hand, the other hurriedly attempting to fix her ebony hair. \n\n
Ty barely kept herself from curtseying before taking the hand and shaking it. Out with the old times, in with the new. She grinned, eyes an entirely non-descript boring color, like most Boyds, brown. She saw the girl trying to fix her hair, beautiful hair. Lucky. Ty's hair was frizzy and brown, only tamed into rather pretty golden-brown curls with masses of gel/hairsprays, which she had no wish to use.
"Tyranthia Boyd", she said with a nod. "Sorry I'm such a klutz. You'd think after all those tutors..." She shook her head in annoyance and wrinkled her nose. "Anyways, my fault, apologies." She bent down and picked up the book she had knocked out of Elizabeth's hands, rubbing her head slightly in the spot where it had collided. "I'm a hopeless case really", she added. "I don't know why mother bothers."\n\n
Elizabeth grinned characteristically. Subconsicously, she twisted her pearl earring, silently praying for her mother's approval in her new beginnings. Her black hair was now pulled back into a one-handed ponytail. Elizabeth assumed that she looked awful in the first place, and she quickly checked herself, making sure she wasn't completely decieving herself. Everything's in good order her mind was totally trained in the art of presentational ettiquette, after years of manners lessons, and all those other golden hoops she'd jumped through for the exact same reason she wasn't talking to her old friends anymore.
Honor, she could hear the words her eldest brother said at their last goodbye, Is so important, Elizabeth! I know you'll make mother and father proud, they'll be watching over. Don't dissapoint us Lizzie. We love you too much for that.
"Tutors," she laughed, re-entering the real world, "the greatest pains in the world to a girl. Maybe you were more fortunate than I- did you have to take tutoring in academics and grace?" Elizabeth remembered almost painfully her last grace tutoring, where she'd let the pile of books topple from her head onto her foot. Gravity didn't seem to like her much, except on the quidditch pitch, where gravity didn't get a chance to pull her down. \n\n
Ty winced. "I'm afraid so..." she made a face. "At least my dad's not really the one into that sort of thing. He's a painter", she explained, "so he understands me. And my photography", she added as an afterthought. "Mother's the one that is into being a proper lady and all that, but I'm a daddy's girl and she's got my sister to pamper, so that's alright."
"'Course, I'm supposed to act like a proper lady and all that. You know the drill obviously", she said with a small smile. "And the Boyd family's obviously rather prestigous, and we're supposed to be known for our good manners and honour. It can be a lot to live up to." At least the Boyd family was more up-to-date, less old fashion. If a girl plainly showed more promise then simply becoming a wife and had no interest in an arranged marriage, then they at least were understood and supported in their career, though this path wasn't necessarily encouraged. It could be worse.
Not that it helped that Ty wasn't really very good at anything besides photography. Even in necessary muggle subjects (such as math) she wasn't ver talented. As for grace... ugh. When it came to looking proper and neat she was a hopeless case, she couldn't manage it without her mother, who seemed to know the trick to managing her frizzy hair. "Where are you from?" asked Ty politely, though it was more then an idle question. Being a photographer, she loved to travel and see new things.\n\n
Elizabeth smiled knowingly at the subject of families and their silly expectations. Her family was a little more relaxed than some of the people she knew from parties and such, but that didn't make her feel any less pressured to do what they wanted her to.
"Ugh, My family, God bless them, they're totally insane. In a sort of weird, yet good way. I feel like I have to do everything according to 'Lavine protocol', which encompasses having beauty, athletisism, intellegence and above all honor. AKA: associate with purebloods, make good friends with the right people. To me, it's silly, but I love my family, and respect their wishes. It's a game we all have to play, so I guess I'm used to it."
She gave a sort of nonchalant smirk and shrugged her shoulders. Her blue eyes danced at Ty's last question. "Where are you from? Oh man, how she loved her hometown. The Lavines had lived in the city of New Orleans since her great-great-forever-great grandfathers had come over from Spain, England and France. Elizabeth adored the city, especially with all the beautiful architecture. With places in the French Quarter like the Cabildo, the St. Louis Cathedral, all of Jackson Square, and of course the plantations like her family had owned for centuries on the outskirts of the city. Of course, that wasn't all: the jazz, creole and cajun food, and of course Cafe Du Monde were all things that attracted her and the rest of the world to the city.
"I'm from New Orleans, Louisiana, the most beautiful and fun city in the United States!" she said, her ice blue eyes sparkling. \n\n
Ty smiled hugely. "You're so lucky!" she exclaimed. She had actually never been to New Orleans, but had read about it and seen pictures of it. If only she could go there... she could only imagine the photo opportunities she could have! Pictures of this dashing through her mind, she gave a rather rueful smile. "I'm from New Hampshire", she said with a roll of her eyes. "Extraordinarily boring", she added.
"Of course, there's always Boyd Castle." If the girl was indeed a pureblood (which she was of course) then she would have heard, and possibly been to, Boyd Castle. Nobody except for a select few knew it's location, it was reached by a portkey. It lay on an island, and it was simply amazing. She didn't believe that even Randolf 4 (who was dying) himself knew the entire contents of the castle. At any rate, it was never boring. "I get to go there for every family reunion."\n\n
"New Hampshire's not that boring. I bet you've got tons of great stuff to shoot at the castle. I've never seen it myself, but from what I've heard, it's gorgeous. So, Ty, I can call you that, right?" she asked rhetorically, "How's your climate accomodation like? The south must be quite a heat wave for someone from New Hampshire."
Elizabeth smiled, letting her blue eyes sparkle, even in the dim and flickering library candlelight. She shifted her weight slightly into her other hip, her hand resting comfortably on it. She had definately heard from other pureblood family's and her own about the Boyd's. They were one of the most prestigious wizarding family's, dating far, far back. \n\n
OOC: Apologies for the long wait, am currently at a holiday family gathering several states away with limited internet access. BIC
Ty glanced around for a chair, and finding a small one, grabbed it and drew it towards Elizabeth, then sat down. "Suprisingly well", she said lightly, "except for my hair", she added grimly, motioning at her head. "It's always fuzzy unless I take the time to make it curly with de-frizzing gel, but this is ridiculous." She was about to make a comment when there was a tap at a window.
She glanced towards it, and saw two owls carrying a box between them. Standing up, she hurried to the window. It took a moment, but she figured out how to open it and pulled it ajar. The two owls soared in, and seemingly after inspecting her, flew in front of her. She saw the package was moving slightly, and noticed that there were air holes, and no doubt charms to keep what was inside from harm. With an enormous grin, she carefully removed the box from the owls and opened it, and out came...
A squirrel, slightly smaller then a cat. "Fiyero!", she said excitedly. The squirrel gave a noise in recognition, and jumped onto her. She hugged him and he nuzzled her slightly before hopping onto her shoulder. She strode back to her chair and sat down. "Sorry about that", she said to Elizabeth, though she wasn't really. She was too happy. "Elizabeth, this is Fiyero, Fiyero, Elizabeth." The squirrel eyes her beadily with eyes far more intelligent then most squirrels, and after deducing that she wasn't a threat to himself or Ty, the grey squirrel jumped onto Ty's lap and sniffed in the direction of Elizabeth.\n\n
(ooc: its ok, and btw the name Fiyero- that's from Wicked, right?! I LOVE THAT SHOW!!!)
Elizabeth nearly jumped out of her seat when she saw what was held within the package- a squirrel? Once the initial shock was over with, she smiled, finding him to be rather... cute. In an odd sort of way.
She didn't mind pets, she had a few of her own, but never had she heard of having a squirrel as a pet. Elizabeth's brothers had owls and Elizabeth had her cat, Bella, but that was pretty much the extent of her family's pets. She looked over again at the little thing and entended her hand.
"Pleasure is all mine." she said, laughing, "So, how did you come to aquire such a pet?"
IC: Fiyero took a look at the girl's hand, obviously considering his options. With remarkable intelligence, he did what he had seen acquaintances of Ty's; he reached out a furry little paw and shook it timidly, quickly retreating back to his friend's lap.
"Well, Fee's not so much a pet", said Ty thoughtfully. She had grown up with magic, so it was rather odd that the thought that Fiyero might be a familiar had not occured to her, despite the fact that he was much more intelligent then most squirrels and that they... understood each other. Through thoughts, not that they read each other's thoughts exactly. It was an odd thing to think about. But somehow, they were always there for each other.
"He's more my friend", she added. "We met in the forests outside Boyd Castle. Dangerous they are, and odd. Was out photographing, and he sort of... warned me that something dangerous was around. Still don't know what it was", she added thoughtfully, looking pensive. "But anyways, he came home with me. Mother objected, but Father thought it interesting to have a squirrel as a... well, he said pet." \n\n
She smiled, at the odd sort of story behind the two. Elizabeth was sort of intrigued by the tale, yet the polite manners that she was brought up with told her to sit quietly or laugh lightly about the situation, no use pouring more emotion into the conversation. So she smiled to appease her conscience, seated herself in one of the chairs and replaced her hand at her lap.
"Well," she said, pikcing up the book in her lap, "I guess I really don't need this, all it says is what I've been told before: purebloods are better than everyone else."
She put it down on the ground beside her chair and sighed. There wasn't much to do around this place, aside from classes. That annoyed her slightly, but Elizabeth brushed aside the feeling and decided to re-engage herself in conversation.
"That's interesting about your encounter with Fiyero, my at Bella is as pampered as her name sounds. She won't go outside even if you pushed her out the door. She absolutely hates being outside, or getting dirty in any way. I guess thats what I get for being tomboyish and playing quidditch with my brothers: a cat who hates all of that." \n\n
Ty laughed slightly. "I suppose you could call me tomboyish in some ways... at least, you'd certainly never catch me gossiping about the latest engagement or permitting my parents to put me in an arranged marriage. I suppose it's Father's fault, he wanted a boy. Not that he raised me to be a boy exactly", she added, "He just... encouraged me to be less lady-like, and Mother has my older sister."
She thought for a moment. "Of course, you'd never catch me on a broomstick. I have the most awful fear of heights", she said. She yawned slightly. "It's rather dreary around here, isn't it?" she commented, rather randomly. "Not really a lot to do, not a lot to photograph either", she stated, watching Fiyero jump from her lap to the ground and scurry up a bookshelf, investigating the area. It was probably because of the surroundings where he had lived, but he was naturally cautious. He looked at her as if to ask if it was alright that he was exploring, and she nodded slightly. With one last look to make sure she was alright, he disappeared behind some shelves.
"I've been told that too", she said slowly, in referance to what the girl had said about purebloods. "Well, of course I have. And, since I came here, I've sort of wondered..." she trailed off, not sure if it was ok that she was expressing this observation, wondering if it was wrong, "if it's true. I mean, I've met quite a few non-purebloods, and they don't really seem that much different. In manners and customs they are usually, but not always." She shook her head in confusion. The Boyd family was more open then some about communicating with non-purebloods, but they still held the general creed that they were superior.\n\n
She looked and nodded her head knowingly at Ty's thoughts on non-purebloods. Elizabeth herself had had the family/friends battle, and in the end she'd decided that her family and their values were more important. She had cut off ties now with most of the muggleborn "mudbloods" she'd befriended, and had come out just mildly scathed. But Elizabeth was planting herself firmly in the metaphorical ground on this issue, and she sighed in the most dignified way she could muster.
"Well, I for one have met alot of people here who just will not and will never come up to my family's standards." she said, her sapphire eyes flashing dangerously with a sudden icy manner to them, "Manners and customs are really everything if you think about it. I do believe that some people can be as intellegent, perhaps even smarter than some purebloods, but afterall, tradition is tradition, and if we start condoning that kind of acceptance, what will happen to our families' reputations?" \n\n
Ty nodded thoughtfully. "I guess I have it fairly easy compared to most. Obviously the Boyds are known for there manners and politeness, and we're expected to be at least courteous to everyone, well, at first at least, no matter the blood type. Not that I should be marrying or being extremely friendly with those of impure blood or anything", she said, "but there's a limited number of those with pureblood here after all."
She thought over what the girl had said. The trouble was, why did those reputations matter? Well, it was obvious that they mattered, because everybody cared about them so much. Ty for one had never really had friends that weren't pureblooded, so she wasn't sure. She just... didn't know. "It's odd really, how much it all matters. Blood type and everything. Maybe it really does matter, maybe it doesn't..." \n\n
She shot a sidelong glance at Ty. Maybe it really does matter, maybe it doesn't... Of course it mattered, how would the world order be if everyone who wasn't equal were treated like they were? Elizabeth's eyes flashed the usual pureblood condescending look of 'are you serious?', but not to Ty, but at the topic in general.
"Well," she said, "I honestly think that it does matter, afterall, it's how the world's been run for centuries, and that's been going all fine and dandy since then, so I don't see why it needs any changing at all. Certainly disestablishing blood divisions would change all of that for people like you and me. We'd... we'd lose power. We wouldn't wield such wealth and dominance. That's really what it's all about you know." \n\n
OOC: As I don't know what author you are or if you have a character at Salem or what... just so you know, there's a sort of plot thing going on at Salem and I'm sort of relating this post to it, as Ty is part of the Boyds that are there, and it's happening to the Boyds. So yah, if that makes sense... BIC
It's all been going fine and dandy? Where had Elizabeth been. There of course had been wars in the past and everything, but one only had to take a look around now to realize that everything was not fine and dandy. Of course, not only was Ty more observant then most, but she was friends (sort of) with Randolf 7, the someday to be patriarch of the Boyd family, so she knew quite a bit from him, but still. There was unrest among the wizarding community, eve between pureblood families, and elections were coming up next year, promising to be a rather tense and bloodthirsty one.
"But-" She couldn't say it. It would sounds crazy, and she knew from experiance that it wasn't smart to say anything against pureblood ideals. She had never really questioned them before now, but somehow it didn't seem... right? She didn't know herself. "Yes, I suppose your right. Although, perhaps it might not be as fine and dandy as you think", she said cautiously. "Meaning no disrespect of course, but it's just... not all that peaceful all the time."\n\n
ooc: no, I dont' play anyone over there, I'm just going along with whatever, so yeah... and Elizabeth isnt stupid, she just overgeneralizes stuff sometimes... :D bic:
Elizabeth sighed. Ty really was right, things were not the way she was trying to make everything sound. She was well aware of all the feuds involving non and purebloods, but something wanted desperately to forget all of that and go along with what she'd been taught. Afterall, things were much easier for a person if they remained going with the flow of things.
"I know things aren't going well," she said, easing her walls down slightly, letting her emotions peek out, "I just wish it were."\n\n
